Good buy from Ebay

With all the talk of the Dapol 73's I thought I'd see if I could get a cheap Hornby one in GBRF livery. I bid on one at £50 with a limited description on the opening title. To my surprise I was the only bidder and won it. Now there was a little bonus, it was fitted with a Howes sound chip and express models lighting. This was included in the description but thought it too good to be true. Postie delivered it today and sure enough. Sound and lights fitted. Result.

I was watching it too.  Forgot to bid on it and was surprised to see that it had gone for such a cheap price.  Enjoy it!

Meant to have a look at something finishing luchtime today, it had stood at £60 for the last couple of days. This morning it was still only just over £100. Forgot about it at the crucial time and on looking 10 minutes after it had finished found it had sold for just over £160. It's not really my scale or period....................but what looked like a nicely built and painted RJH  O gauge 37 for that money :swoon:

Just because it ends at that price does not mean that had someone else had bid they would have got it for a few £'s extra, as the person who won it may have had a maximum bid far higher or would have bid much more. Several times I have bid far more than the starting amount only to either be the only bidder or had little competition for an item, usually a poorly listed item or one ending at an obscure time

Not had much luck lately, though my focus has been elsewhere lately

With the house move getting nearer I am supposed to be reducing my collection, but can never resist an upgrade. I love the little SR P class locos and have a Wills one  waiting to be built, I also sourced a Wills cast chassis with Romford wheels on, anyway a lot came up on eBay for a Southeastern Finecast loco, with a Branchlines chassis, a  Branchlines etched detail set, cast backhead and a set of Romford wheels, just over £61 inc postage. Not bad when the SEF kit is £80 inc chassis and I have £30 worth of wheels and added detail set (I doubt if all the Branchlines etches come with the kit (if any)

Also I won a railcar powered single axle drive, etched chassis, gearbox and what looks like a set of P4 or perhaps EM wheels, DS12 type motor, just what my MTK Bristol railcar needs

I don't often have cause to post in this topic, partly because the term "good buy" is really very subjective. For something really wanted most folk will pay more than the odds for it as we see so often in eBay Madness.

On that basis some may not agree with me that this really was a "good buy". But in this case it was not really a burning desire to "must have" but more of a total surprise that I was not out bid.

Recently I have seen AG hornblocks going for £19 ! A set of 6 OO/EM AG wheels going for £25! A set of AG sprung buffers for £12.00 not to mention a number of AG kits where the asking price has been on the very wrong side of £150.

So I am quite pleased to have had delivered an AG kit (unstarted and complete) for a MR S or U 0-6-0T complete with a set of P4 wheels, buffers, hornblocks, and a few extras, all for under £70 - a more than fair price IMO.

Finally got hold of a PCB stripped from a Bachmann NRM ProtoDeltic

Does this mean we  will see the hybrid prototype Deltic on the the tracks?.......serious question ,I am really interested.

I wouldn't have started this bloody project if I didn't think it was going to work!  :jester:

My one gripe is with Bachmann's spares department which has been singularly unhelpful in failing to answer any queries about availability of NRM ProtoDeltic spare parts.

I used to find anything with P4 in the title/description put the punters off.

I have been unable to find anything for P4 on e-bay. I need some P4 track for displaying some static models in a diorama. The models are from the 'World of Stobart' series from Atlas who have produced them to exact 1/76 scale including the rail wheel gauge on the road/rail vehicles and it is not possible to 'narrow' the gauge without a lot of effort.

The problem is that P4 is still seen as somewhat specialist and comparatively a very small market. Probably the items are too "new" to be sold on on ebay. Track vary rarely comes up and when it does it is usually in kit form. Wheels are fairly regular but when the usual "characters" identify them correctly the asking prices are eye-watering (Ultrascale especially so) just like RG4 motors most sellers seem to have got the idea that they are gold. Loco kits sold specifically as P4 is a nonsense unless they come as this did with everything you require to build one (wheels, hornblocks, etc) Built P4 locos simply do not seem to sell very well. I guess it is because the select group of P4 modellers either build their own or are prepared to have them built. It is along way from the more typical train-set/RTR that is the bulk of eBay fodder.

If you require P4 track the simplest thing is to commission a certain RMWeb member to build it or to DIY.

It's not just in P4. EM Ultrascales also get offered at near top-end as well. You'll probably have seen two EM wheel packs floating around eBay for some months now - one is for the 28xx which the seller has always wanted £90 for, and the other is a pack for the Stanier Black 5 which was touted at £85 (including once instance when it popped up in the secondhand stalls at RailEx) before recently dropping down to a measly £80.....

What arrived with a Southeasterm Finecast P Class (Body only) kit

Branchlines chassis kit

Branchlines detail set

Markit wheels

Pair of brake standard & reversing handles and a cast brass back head

Just need a very small motor, a gearbox and a set of L&Y buffers (do have a L&Y sprung buffers but the wrong ones)

Well with the kit and an etched chassis being £79.95, wheels and axles being £35, no idea of how much the Branchlines detail set + back head and brake standards are, but my £61 seems well spent

Suggestions of motor & gearbox would be handy, kit says DS 10, Branchlines motor mount and Romford 40-1 gears, things have moved on since then

3 or four years ago my Antex 25 watt iron stopped working, as I needed a replacement quickly I bought a new one. I kept the iron so I could replace the element, but never did

Last week I saw  the tip I was using started to bend, so looking at eBay I found suppliers selling tips for £4.35 inc postage also an element for £11.80, given a new iron is the best part of £30 I now have a spare iron with a 5 mm tip where as I use 3 mm tips for track building (I now have 3 spare 3 mm tips). The bigger tip is much better where more heat is required
