Getting close to wildlife - literally

Over the past few weeks I have had some unusual visitors to the garden. There are at least three and maybe more. Not seen often around here (South Yorkshire) but I have seen some in the nearby woods from time to time.

About 10cm long, I think they are young Common Lizards. Not the best quality photo but I was well zoomed in and they are very small and quickly hid if I got too close!

Bleating Tree Frogs on the windowsill hoping to catch moths attracted by the light..

This bunch on the window frame are apparently hoping that if they can get a big enough gang together they can take on the rain moth.

Posted this in the bird area, but worth a showing here I think:

bat.jpg.2b62c82c66b22fc46c148b2725dbe72c.jpg

It was found in our house and taken to a wildlife hospital a week ago. I've phoned a few times and am told the bat is eating and doing well, and will soon be ready for a test flight. He was a bit underweight when found so needed a bit of rest and attention. If he does well they'll bring him back up to our area for release.

More than likely he came in through a bedroom window that was open for airing, and then got trapped indoors overnight.

Is out rather early - which could be why he is underweight. Always good to know they are around, have seen them around every house I have lived in over the years...

Not a great photo but I see this flying round in circles over my flat today, watched for about 15 mins then it slowly flew of in the direction of a local country park. You don't see them every day in a London suburb.

Heres some wildlife that got too close to us. We were lounging out in the backyard enjoying the sun yesterday when my partner was bitten on the hand  by this guy who for some reason decided to come up and have a go.

He/she is a blue tongue lizard, they grow to about 60cm, but this one is a young one only about 15cm at the moment. It lives among the  garden beds and we've seen it around for the last few months in various locations.

Not sure what we did to annoy it, to make it wander across the open grass just  to take a bite.

Luckily, unlike almost everything else here, it doesn't kill you!

Long post, but I've finally been spurred on to post some of the wildlife I saw on my trip to NSW at the end of 2018.

These first three were taken in National Parks I camped in.

The next two were taken at Bream Beach Holiday Park in Jervis Bay Territory.44571462_10158047113669012_7976691013924159488_o.jpg.30e1aecfa9badecbab30b7ef6d7de144.jpg

These of Humpback Whales were taken from Pacific Drive, Bermagui. They made paying £900 and lugging a 3Kg lens halfway around the World worthwhile.

I enjoyed the company of this little fellow when I stopped for lunch at Washerwoman's Beach, Bendalong.

Three from Koala Park Sanctuary, Pennant Hills, Sydney.

Unfortunately, these were the only Koalas and Wombats that I saw alive, the rest had been struck by vehicles at the roadside.

And finally, this is Scout, the only domestic, or any other, cat I saw in three week in Australia. I imagine that most people keep them in due to the risk from snakes and the damage the cats could do to other indigenous wildlife. I came across him in Brougham St, Woolloomooloo.

This small bird of prey decided to eat its dinner in our garden about fifteen yards from our own dinner table - not the most enjoyable dinner I have eaten. I did not want to chase it off as I would have had to clear up the remains. All that is left today are a few feathers.

I watched a sparrow hawk demolish a pigeon on my patio a few years ago. All that was left was a small pool of blood, a few feathers and the head. One of the local cats took the head (as a surprise for its owner?) and a drop of water soon washed away the blood and feathers.

This is from several years ago when I was visiting my parents in Cumbria. I went outside when the sun came out after a heavy shower and saw this chap, fortunately it hadn't moved much by the time I'd got the camera out.

Many years ago when i lived in Romford I heard a strange noise in the garden late one night. When I went to investigate it was a pair of hedgehogs mating.
