RMweb Gold Ramblin Rich Posted July 9, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 9, 2013 ............. Here is an Ivatt that I have just done for Railway Modeller and my Diesel Loco Weathering is out in the next Issue of RM (11 July) again all powders and dry brushed. and also another 9F that had deen sprayed matt Black when I bought it s/hand and I have just used powders on it. ......... Andy, alias Bodgit Andy, I'd missed this before; if the article in RM is for diesel locos, I'll definitely be getting a copy! Lovely work, nicely understated day-to-day grime with subtle variations, rather than the several inch thick layer of unremitting grot which too many people resort to. Thanks for showing your methods. Andrew P
Thanks Shed and ess1UK, I will do a step by step soon but it was in RM. I will do some new pics and a write up. Here is a Bachmann WD that I did last night, for a photo of the real loco have a look in Special Interests / Settel and Carlile / Lunester Lounge. From this a light dusting, add a little white and now some powder and using a Gel Pen some limescale using a bit of acrylic thinners blend in the Gel lines a bit and then another light dusting to finish All done in less than an Hour. RMweb Premium Barry O Posted July 21, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 21, 2013 Looks good for a stored engine - the prototype photo shows the cover over the chimney. The more an engine sits the "rustier" it looks and the more the soot/coal gets washed off the top of the boiler.

Hi Barry, you are probably right but I like it. and it is just a bit rustier than all my others, like this example of a couple of Duchesses or this Peak or Fairburn Bodgit

Just one question...what is a Gel Pen? What are they normally used for?? Hi Gene, A gel pen is normally used by artists, over here Art shops and Craft shops generally sell them, I believe you can get different colours for writing on black card / paper. Another alternative could be white artists watercolor pencils that you can use dry as a pencil and then moisten with a soft brush to blend in or wet the pencil and use. Gene
Thanks Andy...ok I think I might know what a Gel Pen is and where to find them. I've been using water-colour pencils for a couple of years ever since I ran across a short video how-to about using them....its a great technique. billyb_imp
Andy I have just seen a photo you put on Jason's Bacup thread with some excellent weathering, I just had to come back here for another look at all these. I think I might go to Trebudoc now & watch all the videos again
SDJR7F88
Superb work Andrew! Your locos are amazing! Just love your WD 2-8-0! Can't believe it took you an hour! I have just started doing locos, but with only powders. It takes me a number of days to complete one and the results are no where near a amazing as your work! What technique do you use on the overall first coat? Spray paint? If so what paint do you use and how do you apply it. I'm thinking about getting one of those £20 Expo starter kit spray set (if they are suitable) and having a go myself, rather than spending hours grinding powders in! Keep up the great work and looking forward to seeing the next weathered addition!

Hi Callum, My Air brush is from Everything Airbrush in Poole, Dorset, the complete set up was £ 48 plus postage and that is for the Airbrush and the Baby Elephant Compressor. Because I work indoors I use Tamyia Acrylics usually with their Thinners in a 50/50 mix. Just start with a light coat and build up from there. My article on weathering a Steam Loco WITHOUT an Air Brush should be in Railway Modeller within the next couple of Months. All the best, Andy
