RMweb Premium Nile Posted March 17, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 17, 2012 Having been messing around with stuff from Shapeways for some time, I have at last gotten around to designing some stuff of my own. First up is a H0 scale model of Cairo & Kanawha Valley Railroad boxcar no.5 (as found in Slim Gauge Cars by Carstens).Although a 3 foot gauge prototype, it was so small that it was only slightly larger than 2 foot gauge cars. Two prototypes were printed, one with and one without an integral roofwalk. Both are fitted with micro-trains couplers and bogies by TB models. No roofwalk, printed in White,Strong,Flexible (WSF). Same model, fitted with a roof + walkway made from plasticard. With integral roofwalk, printed in WSF-polished.Note how the polishing process has broken the ladder rungs on the side. Same model, with two pieces of plasticard used for the roof. With a few tweaks this model will be ready for production. I'm also working on a loco conversion project, using the Bachmann N gauge 2-8-0 as the basis. Both printed in WSF,the cab was also polished. The cab slots in place of the original. And finally Now I need to get painting.

RMweb Premium Nile Posted April 18, 2012 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted April 18, 2012 Some more goodies have arrived from Shapeways, including an improved version of the loco cab and tender body. The cab has been modified to sit lower on the loco, although this requires a bit more work to the loco body. The tender has steps added, along with some other mods. It looks like I won the Shapeways print orientation lottery this time, the roof has come out nice and smooth.
RMweb Premium Nile Posted July 19, 2012 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted July 19, 2012 Time for another update. The loco conversion project continues with improved versions of the cab and tender, plus new parts for the pilot, chimney, domes and air-pump.A few more parts need to be developed (bell and lamp), but it's nearly there. Next, some new models.A 25 ft flatcar, available as a HOn3 or HOn30 version and with or without stakes. These are the first of a range of cars based on the rolling stock of the Ohio River & Western Railway.Next will be a gondola.

RMweb Premium Nile Posted August 5, 2012 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 5, 2012 I've had a design kicking around for some time now.I decided to make it available, after finally making some instructions for it. It's a model of a Sandy River * boxcar (no.121 - 145).The printed parts provide the body and roofwalk, the inner floor and roof are made of plastic card. This keeps the cost down, as plastic card is cheaper than printed plastic. It should also produce a smoother roof. The printed parts: The finished model: * The Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes Railway was a 2 foot gauge line in Maine,USA.

Wild Boar Fell
Hello Nile. Those wagons certainly look good, how much of them is printed? Also what sort of size are they? I especially like the way how your planking has worked on both the horizontal and vertical faces. Regards, Wild Boar Fell
RMweb Premium Nile Posted August 24, 2012 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 24, 2012 Hello The body and bogies are printed, in WS&F.That includes the stirrups at each corner. The flatcars and gondolas are all 25 feet long in HO scale (88mm). For the planking I use a 0.3x0.3mm trench between planks. This seems to give a reliable result, which can vary with print orientation. The 4 plank version has come out particularly well, that was printed the right way up. You can find more info on the wagons in the Instructions section of the Shapeways forum.
