Jerry Thanks for posting this Jerry, I've not seen this image before either and find the view of No.5 just as interesting as No.80 as I intend to build one of the Fox Walkers as my next S&DJR 3mm locos; I was looking for a suitable chassis at our AGM last Sat but couldn't find one although there's always a chance that I've already bought one in readiness but it needs 'unearthing' from the mess that my modelling room is currently in, it's just taken me several days to find my part built mail van kit that I'd only seen a few weeks ago ... it was in a clear plastic box right next to my seat but underneath some other things !! (LoL ... hangs head in shame.) Regards, Ian.

richard i
I looked to catch up with you at railex, the layout looked really good. I could not get through as every time I got back to see it, you were surrounded by groupies several rows deep. Clearly very popular. richard

RMweb Gold Popular Post queensquare Posted May 30 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted May 30 My liking of eight coupled locos, even if not strictly suitable for the S&D just got out of hand! At the excellent Aylesbury show last weekend I was given this beast. A member had been left a large collection of unboxed stuff which had had a hard life. The monster B&O 2-8-8-4 has a few bits and pieces missing but is otherwise in good shape and runs superbly. The comparison with the 7F highlights just how huge it is, particularly when it’s remembered it’s actually to the slightly smaller scale of 1:160. It will just about squeeze through Windsor Hill but is way out of gauge for Combe Down/Devonshire. It will therefore sadly be restricted to trip working between the colliery and the sector plate! Mind - there are no low bridges on the Midland and I'm not bound by the weight restrictions on the bridges over the Avon……!😊 Jerry

RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted June 3 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 3 Funny, my original 00 S&D loft layout, set in the 1950s had a couple of Crabs lingering on way past their actual departure date along with a couple of Ivatt 2.6.0s. Both types a favourite of mine so simply put, they stayed ! Rob.

RMweb Gold Popular Post queensquare Posted June 3 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted June 3 Sadly I don’t know of any pictures of the red crab on the S&D in 1927 but there are plenty of later pictures of them at Bath. I rather like these of them on green Bulleid three coach sets. Jerry
Caley Jim
I recall as a teenager making a visit to Hamilton sheds. The entrance to the shed itself was an arched passageway through the offices. All you could see at the far end of the passage was the cylinders of a crab! Jim

Jim I remember on one of our visits to the NRM going in the cab of the Midland single followed shortly after by the Crab. The latter was like a barn in comparison- those little Midland cabs may have been elegant but offered scant protection! Jerry 3

And yet a Crab cab felt distinctly insecure - probably a psychological effect caused by the combination of the tender being significantly narrower than the loco cab together with the way the motion caused the loco to constantly pitch left and right at any sort of speed. 2

RMweb Gold Popular Post queensquare Posted June 14 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted June 14 It’s been a good day. Steve Martin from New Zealand who is building a stunning 2mm model of StErth visited this afternoon and we ran some trains, both commenting that it would be great when we could run trains beyond Bath single line box - then this evening the wiring diagram for Bath Junction dropped into my inbox from the brilliant Frank ‘chuffer’ Davies - clear and simple enough for even this electrical duffer to follow! Next job is to get the point motors fitted and wired back to the frame. Harrap crossing next - under the roof by Christmas ..... Jerry 38

RMweb Gold Popular Post queensquare Posted July 18 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted July 18 Very little progress has been made recently due to work, Glastonbury and Larkrail but this week I did something I’d not done for years - bought a new RTR loco! Tom E, along with a number of others, visited over the weekend and brought his Sonic large prairie which he’d fitted with a chip and stay alive and I was seriously impressed with both looks and running - so much so that I ordered myself one! The 41/61xx never ran on the S&D but I’ve always thought they were very handsome engines and a number of them did see out their last few years working coal trains on the Bristol and North Somerset having been ousted from their suburban roles -for which they were much better suited- by the new DMUs. I have a small collection of late steam, early Western Region diesels along with some 16T minerals so she can have an occasional run out with them. Running, detail and finish is superb, the only minor point is the wonky number plates but as I intend fitting new etched plates that won’t be an issue. Conversion to 2FS should be straightforward as the hornblocks designed for earlier Farish chassis will fit. Coupling rods are commendably fine for an RTR model and I will probably just bush them for use with Association wheels and crankpins. It will also acquire a suitable layer of grot - they were in a bit of a state by the time they landed in Somerset. Jerry
RMweb Gold Popular Post queensquare Posted July 18 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted July 18 Another of Sunday’s post-Larkrail visitors was Bryn Davies with some of the trains from his magnificent Colwyn Bay goods. I love a bit of blue diesel action but the star of the show for me was the tanker train, the weathering is just stunning, even better in the flesh than photos. RMweb Gold Popular Post queensquare Posted August 9 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted August 9 Progress on Bath is painfully slow at the moment - not just because I’m busy with work/garden/grandsons etc but also because the job in hand is painfully slow - and deadly dull! Im working on the wiring up of the main panel so that when the point motors on the main run into the station are fitted I can connect them to the lever frame properly and not in some temporary lash up that would almost certainly remain temporary for years! All the point levers are now connected to D plugs. This main frame only controls the signals and all the points necessary to run in and out of the station, the various yard points will be on their own, much smaller, local panels. Two nine pin D plugs are sufficient for the points, the 25 pin D plugs are for the signals - it may be some while before they are needed! RMweb Gold Donw Posted August 9 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 9 Very neatly done Jerry. It is a fair sized frame what are you using for point motors? Don
