EBay madness

Not railway related but it proves the benefit of reading the auction properly...

My wife wanted a USB hub so I found one on Ebay, starting price 1p and £4.99 postage.  So I put £1 max bid on but nobody else was interested and thus I was the winner of a USB hub for a fiver.  Happy with that.

Except it's not actually "a" USB hub I've bought.

It was a job lot of brand new in packaging twenty six USB hubs for 1p plus P&P........

Do I foresee a pop-up eBay shop to get rid of the excess?

So, and I'm sure you've already considered this; those will not be the highest quality items ever. If they're recognisably branded, they're almost certainly fake. If they're powered, I'd think twice before plugging them in.

A good place to start for such things I find.

Looks interesting, but I'd stay well clear of the conversion of mains tungsten fairy lights to LED. Chuck 'em out Recycle them and buy new. They are so cheap, it's not worth the risk and hassle. (You can get a mains 'belt' even through a 100kohm resistor (guess how I know!).  :(

The USB hubs are probably OK. I doubt they are externally powered at that price, even from China.

Avoid the cheap memory sticks however. The one I tried corrupted the data stored on it (I had the same problem with a hard disk caddy and, no, I didn't unplug either of them 'hot') and they can come with nasty viruses preinstalled. The data recovery program I tried was only partially successful. Luckily there was nothing really important stored on them

A good opportunity to re-share this video of someone who really shouldn't still be alive.

On Ebay at the moment a Hornby model of 34092 City of Wells in rebuilt form described as new and never been on a track.

What have I missed,? Surely 34092 was never rebuilt.?

Looks like another seller who's going to be disappointed - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hornby-large-collection-/192011638238?hash=item2cb4c915de:g:nw0AAOSw-YVXlKpx

£750 and he can only be bothered to post one picture the wrong way round. Plus "economy" delivery is £100 but the description says "collection only"!

And registered as a business seller too ....

For £750... where's the rest of the collection?!

So we have a pair of common and relatively worthless Hornby locomotives and a tank wagon and a load of what could easily be empty boxes... (not suggesting this is the case but.....)

For £750!    :O  :nono:

The £100 delivery is probably to get around eBay's rules and regulations - they are not keen on "Collection only".

The same seller also has this "Large (sic) vintage train collection" for £400.

'Worth' at most half that, assuming the closed boxes do actually contain what it says on the lid. (The Dublo box is probably 'worth' more than its contents though - a Dublo signal box can be picked up for a few pounds.)
