amdaley
I admit that I posted it as I didnt consider it 'show' quality, nothing to do with size. I felt that the seller was maybe trying to get a bit more for it by implying it was an ex exhibition regular. Cav Yes a newcomer could easily be swayed by the exhibition implication. It would be a nice little layout for someone. Not sure what its worth though ? £490 ?

Horsetan
I'm somewhat gobsmacked by the price that Portescap/escap RG4s fetch these days. A year or so ago I was looking for one and they were going for around £50-00 or so . This one fetched over a ton! There are two somewhat woebegone ones here and here the first of which doesn't even have the final gear: i wonder what they will make? The latter two seem somewhat caked in old grease, but, since it's a good few years since the last were manufactured, aren't even 'new in the box' ones like the first mentioned getting a little stiff? ... I've made sure that my strategic reserve of RG4s is kept fully greased, using Labelle 102. I do look with huge amusement at the eBay frenzy when it comes to RG4s. With 25 of them in the drawer, mostly bought in the days when they were about £30 new and all earmarked for my kits, one does start making calculations. It's all academic, though. I still think they have probably the best low-friction drivetrain that has ever been made commercially available, and it's such a shame that so very few gearmakers (Grandt Line, Ultrascale and, er....that's it) have adopted the bevel-and-spur or contrate-and-pinion combination - it has a lot going for it. Car makers don't use worm transmissions; their gearboxes and differentials are all built with bevels in them. So should ours. Something is going to go tits up with this one when it finishes, a case of read the description carefully chaps. http://www.ebay.co.u...7#ht_500wt_1414 I have limited sympathy for the buyer in those particular cases. If you look at the bidders ratings they appear to be inexperienced E Bayers so they just got caught up in the whole auction thing. I thought they weren't too good with DCC or even feedback controllers. JE I asked a question about the RG4 that requires a 'push start' to get it running - the reply was that the gear train was free running (so the 'red grease' has not gone solid as is often the case), therefore the actual motor will be 'ker-puttt'. It is now over £60 so that will be an expensive mistake for the buyer! Tony

Etched Pixels
Yes but he added the the last day - and all those people who didn't read it initially with pre-configured snipe tools will never see that, so it won't end well.

It's still got 5 days to run so plenty of time to see it. But if they don't see the last one it was still mentioned twice that it was for the box. pointstaken
Reminds me of a current offer on e-bay - Draper lathe RRP stated apparently to be around £500-£550., one seller was offering it for £5000 (yes, five thousand), since halved to £2500. Words fail one. Dennis Edited September 7, 2012 by pointstaken

Interesting that the 'under bidder' is 1p less than the 'winner' at £5,000.00 - I suspect someone is testing the system here!
