Not so much outright madness but a contender for a ‘bit weird if you think it through’ thread all of its own, perhaps:

‘Wish I had seven spare re-railers’….said no-one ever. Well except maybe a talking octopus who is into N gauge 🤪

It’ll attract a reseller I expect. He’s not going to get seven times the value of one precisely for the reason you state.

Doesn't every N gauge modeller already have one? I don't model N, but every owner I've ever seen uses one - otherwise you'd spend all day putting the trains on the track!

Please forgive my lack of knowledge of Australian trains (it is rather far away). I suppose Tri-ang's effort could pass for the 'L' (as long as you can't count beyond 4). If they could pass off their Pacific as a Princess....

The dogspedition I used as an excuse was rather eventful. My daughter and I decided to take them down the hill along the old road, as it was warm and sunny. Off the lead, they shot off into the distance as usual. Eventually we got as far as we had intended to go and called them back - no sign of them and no response! Eventually they were found stuck half way up the hillside and unable to get down due to the steep slope and large quantities of brambles at the bottom. This involved some mountain climbing to find them a way down. Lewis came at once, Arran found some fields that still required exploration!

All this time there were several griffons circling overhead - we suspected this had something to do with the unfortunate deceased dog* by the side of the road.

* I was informed that it was very smelly. Luckily, old age means I have lost my sense of smell!

I'm certainly familiar with the dog disappearing trick, although for different reasons than you. He's terrified of water and I took him to the beach and the 'waves' were foaming up about 1mm. I thought he might be a starting point to overcome the fear - but no, he slipped his collar and took off up the sand dunes. The sand was very loose, so me attempting to climb them failed miserably.

To cut a long story short, it took me 3/4 hour to rescue him with it getting dark!

He's name is Jamie and he's a Bearded Collie. Problem is he's getting old (12 a couple of months ago) and going deaf now. Also he has a tumour on his bum. He went to the vets the other day, for them to check it out. Results back sometime next week. Also we found out that his litter sister died last month, so his time is coming, I suspect.

But back to the L Class, the prototype wasn't that popular with fans, because although good, strong locos, they were only used regularly on one line and the main traffic (briquettes) was dying out.  But yes, Tri-ang were notorious for making models from the spare parts bin and if they looked like something, so much the better.

Our collie (rough tri-colour) wasn't too keen on water either. He thought swimming served only to get out of the water. Once though I'd left him on the beach and gone swimming. Next thing I found he was desperately swimming after me. I still not sure whether this was a rescue attempt or fear of being left behind. I quickly got him out of the water of course.

The Ratio kits are indeed rather delicate and IIRC the composite has length issues. Really the footboards need to be made of metalhe less said about the paint job the better....

The price is ridiculous, but it is the Studebaker fan (huge bills just for petrol!).

Says something about the state of the track on his layout !

My old dog would run about in the shallows, but if a wave came over him, he'd try and bite it, realise that it tastes nasty and decide that the beach is the better option.

I'm a fan of Buicks, which make a Studebaker look like a Smart car and I still wouldn't try charging what he does for some of that junk.

I can't for the life of me see how he can justify £4.35 post on this.

Having spent a lot of time looking for mine,

and usually only finding it when I'm looking for something else,

I have thought a spare might be useful but I'd only end up losing both.

I had five pencils in my workshop at one time; lately I'm lucky if I can find one.    :)

Agreed; the idea of hanging one on a lanyard round my neck lasted for, ooh, about half a second before remembering that this hobby of ours has a sufficiently nerdy reputation already 🥸

But I still don’t need eight!

Nothing is as bad as a Smart. (IMHO - If there is anything worse I  don't want to meet it. It's the only vehicle that ever gave my the impression it was actively trying to kill me!). I thought the Ford Escort Mk. 1 was the worst car ever* until I drove a Smart and, yes, I learned to drive on a Ford Popular (as in 'Sit up and Beg!).

Dad said, "If you can drive that , you can drive anything!"

*Gas guzzling, gutless, carp brakes, and awful roadholding - just for a start!

There's a breaker's yard full of Smart Cars alongside the railway near Wolverhampton.

A specialist breaker generally means that parts are either hard to come by, eye wateringly expensive, or both!

Given all of the modern safety features in cars, I always wondered what would happen to your legs in a heavy frontal collision?

I think the G-Wiz is possibly even more of a heap of cr@p than a Smart....

@MrWolf As far as safety is concerned, in a Bubblecar, your legs were defined as the crumple zone.  Not that folk had any concept of the term back then...

I see what you mean, it looks equally like someone has painted it with glue and rolled it in a vacuum cleaner dust bag.  And why have RR insisted in showing us a RoS stock label on the box?

This just appeared (one of those odd things the computer thinks one might be interested in):

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/272922764051

"Oh my first 'proper' train" (Xmas 1949) I thought and investigated . First the frightening price and then the quartering error - obviously due to the missing wheel on the other side, OK it's in Argentina, but junk is always junk!

Those Smart Cars obviously comply with all of the EU regulations on design and construction though, we're not talking about a 1959 Isetta here, this was the car that was going to end congestion and cut pollution, it was the Smugmobile before we had the Electric Smugmobile. It must have had something as crash protection?

What a ratty looking article!

Fine overall condition

Yeah.....

Apart from the missing wheel, what about the vanishing label on the handrail and the three different smokebox doors...

Weren't they built at Ashford after the railway works were closed down?

They were rather scathing about the power of the G-Wiz' electric motor.  Mr. Ford considered that enough for a Model T for a similar weight. The engine was 3 litres and must have been most of the weight of the vehicle!

Yes it is cr@p, but it does come from the country that thought the Italian 'Ape' (Bee) (from the company that inflicted brought you the 'Vespa' (Wasp)) was worth copying.

They are both well named for being (no pun intended) buzzy and irritating!

Lewis hates Api (especially white ones) and always barks furiously at them, aided and abetted by Arran. (Any excuse is good for a barkfest!)  We think his last owner must have had one (and a white Panda he hates those too!). (He's a rescue dog, found abandoned in a field. He was supposed to stay with us, just for a while...).
