RMweb Gold PjKing1 Posted April 12, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 12, 2014 A great photo for reference on the loco, but it also brings back to me the general run-down look of Lime Street in those days - rubbish in the tracks, dirty platform edges, a grey gloom and those DMUs (or is one a Liverpool-Crewe EMU?) as the only other stock in sight. Then to those rolled up packages awaiting attention on the multi-coloured, multi-textured surface of the next platform, wrapped in brown paper, and not on a trolley despite the damp weather. Good stuff for modelling a gloomy Monday in the 60s. (My sister was born in Liverpool the day before, a Sunday). VOYAGERBOI Posted April 13, 2014 Share Posted April 13, 2014 (edited) I am very impressed with my D211, the model was a little hesitant when I first ran it, but now performs really nicely and to have the benefit of "sound" on my DC layout in an albeit reduced form is a real bonus! My only niggles were the already flagged issue with fitting the centre head code disc and an errant locomotive air control pipe which was floating about at the bottom of the packaging. Heavyhaul Posted April 25, 2014 Share Posted April 25, 2014 Try the Loksound 4 auto tune feature - you'll need at least 4-6ft of clear track - ensure you know which direction the loco is set to travel, then set CV54 = 0 press F1 the loco will shoot off at speed and then stop on it's own, this should help improve slow speed running. It's always worthwhile running-in a new loco in both directions, preferably on DC, only fitting DCC once happy with its running qualities. andyman7 Posted April 25, 2014 Share Posted April 25, 2014 Hmm, well having acquired a pair of blue split headcode examples which had been tested and put away on receipt, I got them out today to find that one was dead albeit lights working. I ran through a series of diagnostics and got to the chip. I was going to try the model with a blanking plate but just thought I'd remove and re-insert the chip first 'just in case'. That seemed to sort it! I'm not sure how robust the 21 pin connection is but thought I'd post this as I recall one or two others had problems at some point with lights-but-no-movement. NERBOB Posted April 27, 2014 Share Posted April 27, 2014 Hi All, Herewith showing my "mod" to the Bachmann Class 40 pickup wiper arrangement. The wipers on the wheelsets are in very good shape and effective so no modification was done there. However, I detest the brass contact wiper idea on the circuitboard, very cheap and nasty, and especially as DCC is wholly reliant on good contact I soldered very fine enamelled copper wire to both the pickup wipers and to the motor chassis contact strip (Important note: very hot iron - flux - and minimal touch to avoid internal damage to the motor housing or winding.) It is also important to use a thin flexible cable so as not to allow the bogie to wander or not turn if a thicker cable is used. Ensure that the parts are adequately insulated from the circuit board and chassis on completion to make absolutely sure there can be no short circuit. Disclaimer: I hasten to add that this is NOT a "how to" sequence and I take responsibility for my own Loco only. I do not encourage anyone to undertake this modification on my say so, nor do I accept any responsibility for any damage caused to any other model by following my example. Hi Stewart I am sure that the loco in the first photo is not D206 despite the caption.
