caradoc
This might be a long shot, but can anyone recall a book from the early 1970s containing photos of (I think) 4 closed/dismantled railways, one of which was the Oxford/Witney/Fairford line ? I believe this was a 'coffee-table' type book, rather than a specialist railway publication. Thanks in advance for any assistance.
MartinWales
Try Christopher Somerville as as the author-seems to be his style.
Dave777
Can't help with the book, but this may be of interest (if you've not found it already): http://www.martin.loader.btinternet.co.uk/Fairford_Branch.htm
Guest oldlugger
Hello caradoc, I think I have this book. The problem is I'm in France and the book is at home in Wales! If it is the one you are referring to, it's called "Just a few lines" by Paul Jennings and is published by Guiness. It's long out of print and was more of a photographers view of the the branch lines covered, rather than an enthusiast's perspective - as you say. There are some nice photos of the Fairford branch with a rare view of Witney goods depot coal sidings and one of the main staff members (Cyril Sherborne - I think). http://www.amazon.co...s/dp/0900424508 One of the leading experts on the branch is Stanley Jenkins. Cheers Simon

Cheers Simon I'm fairly certain that's the one, the name definitely rings a bell. I have a copy somewhere but haven't had a chance to hunt it down today and it will no doubt be in a 'reserve' bookcase somewhere; if I get a chance I'll try to look for it tomorrow but as our c.h. system has gone u/s I suspect my attention might be diverted elsewhere. caradoc
Thanks for your help everyone. I think the Paul Jennings book may be the one. I wasn't aware of the website, it looks interesting. I never cease to be amazed at the breadth of knowledge of RMWebbers ! Thanks again.
RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted January 2, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 2, 2012 I think the Paul Jennings book may be the one Just checked my copy (still got an 'interesting' odour from the second hand bookshop where I found it!), and it's definitely the book you're looking for. I always found it so evocative of it's time when it first came out, really nicely observed, but never got one at the time (too young and no money!), but I found my copy secondhand a few years ago.
