The Cornish diaspora is a curious thing. There were large expatriate Cornish settlements in places as diverse as Australia and South America.

pH
2 hours ago, PhilJ W said: Not a sign but still wacky. I grew up very close to a large and deep quarry (now long filled in). The fencing round the quarry was originally just regular barbed wire on wooden posts. Eventually this was upgraded, using metal posts of the same shape as those lamp-posts, about 8 feet high above ground level, and set in concrete. Between them was chain link fencing and several strands of barbed wire were to be strung between the posts, attached to the overhang at the top of the posts. The posts numbered in three figures, all round the perimeter of the quarry. A crew arrived to install the chain link and the barbed wire strands, and their reaction was “Can’t do it!”. The metal posts, now firmly set in concrete, had been installed with the overhang facing inwards - towards the quarry - no great deterrent to anyone wanting to cross the fence. The solution - every post had the overhanging part burned off, then welded back on facing outwards! The job took weeks.
