R A Watson
No historical queries this time, but, can anyone recognise the location of this bridge? Yes, the girders are at either end of the same bridge. Wally
D1041
The bridge is on Valletort Road, looking West. The road diverging to the right is The Elms.
10800
Er, yes, and where is that please?
D1041
From looking at old maps, the bridge appears to have carried the road over a short line to Devonport Goods Yard (GWR). Has anyone got any photos of this yard?
RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted October 3, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 3, 2011 Er, yes, and where is that please? Well (if it's been correctly identified) it's just east of Devonport station.
D1041
Er, yes, and where is that please? In Plymouth, approximately 1 mile from Plymouth Station in the Cornwall direction.
R A Watson
Correct gents, originally Devonport goods later the Civil engineers Valetort Road depot. When the picture was taken my back was against the boundary wall of the Cornish main line, the road going off to the right crosses this on a bridge better shown in this picture. Down trains went past here into Devonport station the reversed back into the yard. The site is now flats but if you know where to look you can still see under the bridge into the site from passing trains. I must say it's surprising how many locals and ex locals crop up on here, I wonder if there is room and inclination for a Plymouth group for us inbetweenys who do not fall into either the Devon or Cornwall classification. RMweb Premium Kris Posted October 4, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 4, 2011 Thought it looked very familiar as I didn't live too far from there at one point.
RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted October 4, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 4, 2011 As has been said, BR/Railtrack used to have a PW and S&T depot in Valetort Road and I remember it functioning, but it has since been closed and flats built upon the site.
