gridwatcher Posted September 10, 2011 Share Posted September 10, 2011 An advice plea. Not having many Athearn (new style) SD40-2s and wanting sound in a rather white one I need some help. Does the Soundtraxx TSU-1000 (EMD 645 with Turbo) fit the bill for newer Athearn models? I assume the decoder would just plug in? I see the new chassis has a screw off lump at rear of hood and assume that's where speaker fits best. Is there a narrow hood speaker for Sondtraxx Tsunami that fits here nicely? Have any of you done one and are there any pitfalls? Most of my recent stuff has been drop in boards in Proto, Kato and Genesis stuff. squeaky Posted September 10, 2011 Share Posted September 10, 2011 I have recently fitted a Sountrax Tsunami to an Athearn SD45T-2 which is very similar to an SD40-2, you are correct in that you can remove the rear lump of metal to make room for the speaker. You have to remove the old board and discard it. Neil Rogers Posted September 11, 2011 Share Posted September 11, 2011 The hardest bit is finding room for the speaker. Β if it doesn't fit over rear truck try in the cab. (sometimes you may need to remove a bit of the chassis) Β i've done a few Kato's, there easy if it's got the sound friendly chassis, SD38, New SD40-2, AC4400, F40PH etc i made a mistake on my SD38's i used TSU-1000 plug-n-play i had to remove the roof weight & rear light fibre-optic. but they now do a replacement board TSU-KT1000 so in future i'd go with that.
