RMweb Gold Barry Ten Posted June 8, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 8, 2021 Slow but steady progress on the "Thunderbirds Are Go" Zero-X: The colour used here is the second go at the metallic blue. The first came out too dark, so I sanded down and oversprayed with some Halfords BMW metallic blue. But it's still too dark, even though the shade on the cap looked good! The plan now is to overspray with a mist of thinned-down silver, to knock the blue back to a lighter, but still metallic hue. I've watched the clips quite a few times and the exact shade is difficult to gauge, seeming to vary between a reasonably deep blue in some shots, and a much paler shade in others. I'm only to going make one of these, so I figure it's worth the trouble to get it looking right to my eyes, at least. Elsewhere, the MEV is nearly finished and I'm just putting on some white primer coats. Once I'm happy with the finish, I'll mask off a band of white down the middle of the windows and then spray it with the same blue as the rest of the ship. Once painted, the windows will be "glue n glazed" like loco cab windows. The rear will eventually benefit from some cast metal rocket nozzles, but I left them off for now as I didn't want to have to spray around them. 16

Ben B
As mentioned on another thread about mental health and model making, I've been doing some stuff based on the book "The Iron Man" by Ted Hughes (which I'd been reading to Younger Child). Me and Eldest are going to be collaborating on some images as she's brilliant at illustration work, and I frankly wanted a non-railway model project as a pallet-cleanser after the Cakebox and Seaside Railway builds I did at the start of the year... The above are the first test shots, trying out the concept, whilst we were in Wales for the half-term. The Iron Man himself. Seen part way through construction. The base model is a large posable drawing figure, about 20 inches tall, which I somewhat butchered, adding all sorts of bits from the spares box. There's the remains of some broken lamps, plumbing and hose parts, toy guns, all sorts in there. I was trying to avoid it looking too military/antagonistic, but also give it a slightly unsettling look. Equally I didn't want it looking too much like fictional robots (for instance, a plan to have posable bendy-pipe arms and legs was ditched when it started looking like Bender from Futurama!) I also messed around the with proportions a bit; the arms are longer, the legs too, compared to the base figure. The head is removable to allow access to the LED lights, repurposed micro-torches. I wanted a farm house for one of the shots to emphasise the size of the Iron Man, so turned to the venerable Airfix/Dapol thatched cottage. It was quickly painted in dark drybrushed shades, and set on a patch of heathland from hanging basket liner with some 00 trees. The windows were glazed, and a set of Poundland LED lights stuffed inside to light it up. On the beach in West Wales one evening, me and Elder Child scrambling around on the rocks, getting odd looks off the locals. Forced perspective- the Britains Farm figures in the foreground are 1/32nd, theoretically so is the Iron Man. The concept tests worked nicely, so Local Lockdowns permitting, we're going to try for some more scenes from the book over the summer 7 7

RMweb Gold Barry Ten Posted June 22, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 22, 2021 Continuing with my Zero-X, which was too dark (see above) I oversprayed a dilute coat of Mig Silver: It was a bit blotchy in places so I then misted on a very faint coat of the original blue again, which I think got me to where I wanted to be. The MEV was also masked and sprayed: Here are a few stills from the film. As you can see the hue varies a bit from shot to shot, presumably depending on lighting and which model was being used. railroadbill
FAB, Barry Ten. Looking really good. The film stills look like the sets were lit with a lot of highlights to give the effect of bright sunshine and blue skies and to bring out detail on the models. I'm wondering if that lighting was a normal "look" for Thunderbirds, will have to dig out a dvd tomorrow and have a look....

Best bits were the first half hour or so and the final rescue. None of the puppets walk... There are also some good futuristic helicopters (not so futuristic now of course). I've just had a clear out of most of my old versions (similarly, there's only three left) but - particularly the original blue box release - they are/were attracting good prices on eBay... This first release will be followed by others - neither of the two the schemes from the box use the squared off fin top, but the components are there on the sprues. My station/yard baseboard will rapidly become a dispersal area!!

RMweb Gold Barry Ten Posted June 30, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 30, 2021 Getting near the finishing line with the Zero X. The kit came with a set of basic transfers but there are a lot more markings than could be added. However, I was mainly relieved that the decals went on satisfactorily as you never know with old kits. It's propped up on a film canister to stop the nose touching the ground. Although I scribed in panel lines where I could, it didn't look busy enough so I went back and added more using a black biro. The numerals on the fin look like they should be larger but I can live with them. This is a 2 x 4 sheet of foam so should give an idea of the size of the model. What probably doesn't come through is the weight! This thing is solid plastic (high density foam or resin) so it weighs a ton. As mentioned right at the start, the kit is meant for it to be displayed with wheels down but it doesn't come with anywhere near enough wheels-* to do the job properly. In addition, the wingtips on the number 1 lifting body should be folded down if it's on the runway. My plan, eventually, is to find enough wheels to do the job and then cut and remount the wingtip. Until then, it's in flying (or should that be crashing) configuration only! * - incidentally, one amusing detail from the film is that the rear set of undercarriage on the main body, used as it moves out of the hanger, are missing by the time the number 2 lifting body couples on. There isn't room for them once the wing is in place. This means that there's an entire set of undercarriage that go all the way to Mars and back but are only used once! 12
Unicorn1
The layout has taken a back seat lately, but I've been keeping busy with these 1 /24th Revell Routemaster. Lots of plastic, but went together well, although the main roof panel was decidedly warped! The long home made advert on this side went a bit astray, the decal paper was very sticky! Offside ad went on bette r, blinds were home made. Still need to make some garage running numbers. What do people always say - look at the prototype - well there's a colour photo of this very bus when new in K Blacker's 'Routemaster, Vol1', which shows it with what looks to be a white relief band! I assumed it would be Chiswick Cream! The bus was primed grey, and then sprayed with Halfords Ford Radiant Red, not a bad match for Ayres Red, but maybe would have worked better with white primer, And a 1/32 Mini Art B type. Seen in the company of the old Varney 1/76 version, and the 1/72 Roden plastic kit. I have another two Routemasters to build, one will certainly be green, and another B type as well!
