RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted July 5, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 5, 2011 These inset rails on the harbour wall at St Ives look to be standard gauge. They have also been there a very long time, judging by the rust and wear on them. The problem is, this harbour wall is (a) the wrong side of the harbour for easy access from the GW line and (B) is quite a long way from the branch terminus. Does anyone know a bit more about the history of this bit of track, please?
RMweb Premium Kris Posted July 5, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 5, 2011 I'd go for crane tracks. There is an old post card that shows a crane on one of the walls. This is to distant a view to establish if it is mobile or not though.
Coombe Barton
I'll go for crane tracks as wel - I can remember a pic with a crane somewhere - just remembering where is the problem.

RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted July 5, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 5, 2011 Hehe - the answer it seems is given at the very last item in the RMWeb link posted by Coombe Barton. The only old photos that I have found in a quick search all show a fixed crane on the West Pier and what looks like - at a distance - a fixed crane on Smeaton's Pier but teh latter is definitely not there in all the pics of Smeaton's Pier.
