br2975
I must confess I don't know the area well and looking on Google maps I'm not sure where the yards you mention are. However looking at the maps of the Newport area there appears to be a yard not too disimilar to yours on a curve close to the docks the name nearest is Maesglas. Maybe East (or West) Maesglas yard or Maesglas east yard etc.......... Alexandra Dock Jct. / Maesglas / Mon. (Monmouthshire) Bank were a few of the yards to the west of Newport......East Usk yard mainly served the Uskmouth Branch and to a lesser degree the Nettlefolds Branch........ East Usk is still used for (Freightliner) coal trains to run around in order to access Uskmouth Power Station at the far end of the Uskmouth Branch; and also for DB(S) steel trains to/from Llanwern to access the branch when carrying steel import/export traffic to/from Birdport, for which propelling move I believe a brake van is (or was) still kept at east Usk. ...... br2975
Newport's railways - as they used to be .......... . (From an old map I have, the provenance of which is unknown). . NOTES The Courtybella - Llanarth St. line via salutation Jct ran alongside Cardiff Road for part of its' length, and was abandoned many, many years ago. The Ebbw Jct steam shed/workshop is shown, not the later diesel depot. . Brian R
Leon
Hey guys some great suggestions thank you. Ian, ADJ was the yard that gave me the idea of curved sidings as opposed to straight running ones, I like the name Alexandra jct but thought if I named it that people would compare it to the real thing. I like Liswerry, my wife has just written a book and on the front cover is a railway bridge with Liswerry graffiti on. Woolos Yard is good, as is Coldra, Price of Wales Yard, thanks Scott and Class 66. The back ground to the yard is Port Talbot but I think I will go with a name close to Newport or Cardiff, the line past the steelworks goes to the fiddle yard which is the docks so maybe a name after a road in either Newport or Cardiff docks?
marc smith
Hi Leon, I used that gaugemaster "industrial" backscene on my O gauge micro "poynton sneer" I've had many comments that it looks like Port Talbot In fact, I bought it for the very reason that it reminds me of the view northwards, when standing on the crossing at Margam Knuckle yard..... At the Exmoor show a few weeks back, I had a chap come along and tell me it was definately a photo of Port Talbot He had seemingly spoken to someone involved in the production of the photo and informed me he was involved in dismantling one of the chimneys in the scene.... Just thought you may want to consider this, in the name of your layout.... "Nettlefolds Knuckle?" - nah, too much of a toungue twister! Looking great BTW Cheers Edited September 4, 2012 by marc smith
pitbull1845
Leon, just had a thought... What about Alexander Dock Junction. Simples..... Feel free to "Go Compare" but you'll probably just get confused. (.com) Cheers Scott
Leon
Evening all, Again not much work done of late, spent a bit of money at Hattons today on another two BP TEA's to complete the rake, also four TTA's for depot fuel and a few trees. Not much chabnge from £100 theses days. Managed to snap a few locos at Queen Alexander Dock Jct or Abbey Works Marshelling Yard? Railfreight 506 rests up in the long grass in the yard headshunt whilst Mainline 406 shunts a few loaded Railfreight HEA's ready for the days departure somewhere. Intercity 47 is present with a couple of MOD vans and empty container flats for the docks.

andypops
This may be a bit late, but of all of the suggestions, Liswerry and Woolos are the stand-outs to me. Local, fit in with the Cardiff/Newport feel, but aren't really based upon real places. But just to throw my hat into the ring - perhaps you could call it "Pilloo Junction" (portmanteau Pillgwenlly & Waterloo juncts.) Or "iard y wych tywysog cymru" ( for a proper Welsh feel)? [translates to "the Great Price of Wales Yard"]. Only problem is, with the lack of Welsh language use around a lot of S. Wales, especially Newport and Cardiff, it's probably unlikely to have ever been called a Welsh name. Up north, I could believe it a little more! My last suggestion - what about Wentloog North? The area you're modelling is to the north(east) of Wentloog, there's nothing else / similar there (well, except the Freightliner terminal...) and it's a nice-sounding, interesting word...! Hope I'm not too un-helpful! Andy P.S. Leon - the work you've done recently is stunning, still keeping your high standards, and it's coming across in the pictures. I'll continue to watch! br2975
Why not "Duffryn" - that's to the west of Newport ? . Or, if you want to twist the tongues of the 'saes' try "Spytty Park" or "Spytty Road" as homage to 'the County' (riding high at the top of the Blue Square Conference). . As for the xr3i - I'm sure i had my head under it's bonnet once, and pulled the carpet back away from the cill on the drivers side - to check the VIN plates. . Leon
Iike Spytty Rd Jct Marsheling Yard. Brian Not too much going on this week, de branded the Esso TTA's which will be used to deliver depot fuel, need to add the oil stain, dirt etc. They are seen stored in the cripple siding whilst 37506 rolls past with a short freight. Leon
Hi Sam, many thanks. I hope to order a new locomotive soon, other than that not much else has happened, added some fencing and waiting for some more to arrive, I was hoping to spend money on rolling stock or scenery but I've seen a 37 at a good price that will become 37712 The Cardiff Rod Mill. Thanks again for commenting. Leon.
