Locomotives of note:

Class 04, 2240 had been withdrawn in April 1968 from Birkenhead and was broken up by AR King, Norwich in October 1970.

Class 04, 2297 which would survive for another ten months before being withdrawn in July 1970 and broken up almost immediately by H Brahams, Bury St Edwards in September 1970.

Class 10, 3137 which would survive for another ten months before being withdrawn in July 1970 and broken up by CF Booth at Doncaster in November 1970.

8215 was one of three class 15s that became long term residents at the Plant, 8214 and 8218 were the others. they sat at the side of the Crimpsall shop  until eventually (1971/72) they were dragged off to Crewe to be cut up

Scorpion,

Yes those three were there in 1971, this observation was in 1969 so I guess it was there for repair.

On this Day in History – Bristol Bath Road MPD Open Day – 18th October 1969

 

An autum trip to Bristol for the depot open day. My main memory of this day is the return journey behind a Peak (most likely D31) which I failed to record, the reason being I suspect is that I was travelling in the last compartment of the last coach and could not be bothered to walk along the train to confirm. Imagine my delight when we stopped at Bromsgrove and picked up two hymek bankers (D7025/22) for a push up the Lickey.

On this day in History - Day Excursion to Swansea - 4th November 1972

 

One way in the early 1970’s of travelling to interesting railway destinations on the cheap was to become a Notts County Football Club supporter for the day and use their football special train (Footex). Being in the old Division 3 at this time meant little risk of football hooligans and some interesting railway destinations. On this day forty two years ago Notts County played Swansea away and I used the the Magpies Footex for a trip to South Wales and back with traction being provided by Peak 51 and in lieu of the match a walk out to Landore MPD. Result of the match was a win for Swansea 3-0.

Saturday November 20, 1965

 

The closure of Bristol's last steam shed, Barrow Road.

 

On shed at 08.45 were: in steam : 48266, 92209. Stored : 3696, 30133, 9790, 4630, 5932 Hayden Hall, 3863, 3836, 6965 Thirlstaine Hall.

 

The M7 was in transit from Fratton to a South Wales scrapyard.

 

At 9.00 48266 left with 3863, 3836, 5932, 6965 for Gloucester, on the first stage of their journey to South Wales.

At 11.00 92209 left with the remaining four tank engines, also for Gloucester.

 

48751 arrived in the afternoon off a Midlands freight and was probably the last foreign engine to use the shed.

92209 returned from Gloucester and 9680 came on shed after carriage heating duties at Malago. All three engines were on shed next day.

No further steam locomotives would be admitted and the repair of steam locomotives would cease once those present had been repaired or withdrawn. A4, 4-6-2 Pacific’s 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley and 60010 Dominion of Canada were being prepared for preservation with 60026 Miles Beevor being used for spares. 9F, 2-10-0 92220 Evening Star was also being prepared for preservation. The works were in the process of completing the construction of its last order for class 47 locomotives (D1106 – 1111). The class 71 dc electric locomotives had just commenced the process of re-building into class 74 electro-diesels.

Thirty nine class 47's on the works, not counting the new build?

 

Not so good.

 

It was always noticeable to me how FEW class 20's there always were, from a class of over 200. Was that because they were reliable, or because the design made them easier to overhaul at local level?

I too had noted the lack of class 20s. I thought that once commissioned Crewe only took 20's in for major work (accident damage usually), Derby and St Rollox dealing with the remainder of the class. However I suspect your thoughts about reliability and ease of access to components at major depots (remember how many were Toton based) also played a major part in keeping them out of works.

John, I think I've commented about this before on one of your posts about Crewe works from about that time, but I'm amazed at the number of WDs in works so late in steam days.
