Not quite on this day, but I've only just found the stuff I've been looking for. train and shunting records for Deepcar yard which I rescued from a derelict building after the yard had been vacated. The nearest I have to today is for 6th May 1992, eleven years after the line closed as a through route and the juice was switched off

There were two trip workings from Tinsley that day, the first one  6T01, arriving at 08.15, with 1 loaded and 4 empty wagons, which it then placed into the exchange sidings, departing light engine back to Tinsley at 09.05.

The early turn man, it seems, didn't record the loco number, maybe the same loco was used all day? Further study may reveal this.

Anyway the afternoon trip 6T03 arrived at 16.05  from Aldewarke, loco 37013 with 6 SSA wagons which were placed into the exchange sidings. The loco departing light again at 16.25 back to Tinsley.

 

 The previous day is on the same sheet and provides an insight into some slightly more intense activity.

47331 arriving from Tinsley at 17.45 and, it seems, splitting it's load of 6 SPAs into two lots of three which were placed in the exchange sidings separately.

It then made up a train of 25 HSAs and SSAs from four different lots, including a trip into the yard to pick up an extra wagon.

It would appear 8 different shunt moves between the exchange sidings, west end and the station yard, all completed and the train departing an hour after arrival at 18.45.

On this day forty four years ago it was a lovely spring day and I was out on my push bike for a tour of some “local” establishments. This is what I saw on my fifty mile plus cycle ride:

Of note is that despite seeing forty six locomotives at Toton I did not seem to see any class 44 Peaks which suggests I failed to get all the way round the shed. Also you can see that in 1971 Burton on Trent was still the railway centre for the South Leicestershire coalfield which at that time could support  six Burton allocated class 08 pilots and also out-stationed from Toton eleven pairs of class 20’s and a class 47.

The cessation of headcodes in early 1976 made train identification difficult, but I noted those trains whose consists I recognised. Unfortunately I did not note what service trains the Westerns were on. No HSTs yet, and the 47/4s still ruled the rails on South Wales-London services.

It's strange how reading 39 year old note books in what memory is retained or can be reinvigorated. There was a train from the North that was always 50 hauled early evening in 1976, and a rather grumpy man (also into railways) travelled home on it after walking to parkway from nearby Rolls-Royce. He always window hung immediately behind the 50, and always snarled at us young spotters on his arrival. I wonder where he is now? Perhaps he was a "basher" - I took no interest in 50s then, they were the Bête Noire, gradually replacing our beloved Westerns. This working was often the first move by a newly arrived 50 coming from Crewe.

 

45071 - it may well have been the first time I saw it after coming off Derby works to have all headcode gear removed and (at the time) quite shocking sealed beam headlights. We thought it was a class 40 approaching at first. Happy days.

Thanks John - I was at Eastfield that day, arrived on a Bristol-Edinburgh Adex and travelled by push-pull 27s, and we did rapid visits to Eastfield and Haymarket.

Hi Downendian, I was on this Adex too. Four pounds from Bristol Parkway, 40157 took us from carstairs and 25113 on the return I think one of the 27s was 27203. I also remember clearing my Deltics that day with 55010. I returned later that year in November, when the late Geoff Woodley organised a coach from Edinbugh to Millerhill,Haymarket, Eastfield, glasgow works and polmadie. I am sure our paths must of crossed many times because between 1971 and 1977 I was always either at filton junction or Parkway. Happy days
