RMweb Premium melmerby Posted February 15, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 15, 2014 I bet when you were copping those locos 50 years ago you could never imagine that you would be publishing them on a website (just a figment of somebody's imagination then!) Plenty of interest as usual Cheers keith
johnw1
On this day in History –Toton – Sunday, 15th February 1970 On this day forty years ago despite it being the winter it was out with the push bike for a twenty mile round trip to Toton for a “bunk” round the shed. This is what was seen that day: class 08 (3039/58, 3345/62, 3852/59, 3996/97), class 20 (8005/06/34/38/39/44/59/60/61/71/75/76, 8112/35/40/46/48/54/68/76/94), class 25 (5226/47/67, 7604/54), class 44 (9), class 45 (13/38/41/68/83/87/94, 100/10/16), class 46 (159), class 47 (1522, 1612, 1803/12/22/23/27/31/57/62, 1961). Although a Sunday only fifty seven locomotives and only one class 44 seen which suggests I got “slung out” half way round. A number of the above locomotives were photographed later in their careers and can be seen in this collection. 3039 (08027) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5530679688/ 3852 (08685) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/6403848925/ 8006 (20006) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5929293418/ 8044 (20044) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/6928801007/ 8112 (20112) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5795254539/ 8154 (20154) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/8000930899/ 8194 (20194) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/8379736816/ 5226 (25076) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5580936225/ 9 (44009) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/6316931664/ 38 (45032) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5900029104/ 41 (45147) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5900031276/ 68 (45046) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5947153238/ 83 (45142) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/7968610588/ 94 (45114) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5596412658/ 100 (45060) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5698566282/ 116 (45103) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5698566282/ 159 (46022) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/6817510872/ 1803 (47322) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/6233034477/ 1831 (57005) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/8276125355/ 1961 (47515) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/8725370156/

Things to note are the abundance of class 25’s, (Tinsley had a batch of class 25/0’s on allocation at this time) and 3035 and 3037 which had been withdrawn the previous December and would be converted unsuccessfully into snowploughs ADB966508 and ADB966510 respectively, both broken up in 1979 A number of the above locomotives were photographed later in their careers and can be seen in this collection. 3289 (08219) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/7399551008/ 3401 (08331) – http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5649195286/ 3574 (08459) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/7828996556/ 3897 (08729) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/9512493017/ 4035 (08867) – http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/6010903598/ 4500 (13003) – http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/6706421973/ 4502 (13002) – http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5643878786/ 8020 (20020) – http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/6357179485/ 8025 (20025) – http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5558897388/ 8128 (20128) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5533453310/ 8130 (20130) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/6949309344/ 5171 (25021) – http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/6202946222/ 5174 (25024) – http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5563003015/ 5185 (25035) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/7660376900/ 5252 (25102) – http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5760255019/ 7562 (25212) – http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5743092935/ 5541 (31123) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/7049954841/ 5548 (31130) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/11062329245/ 5583 (31165) – http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5893190534/ 5830 (31297) – http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/6782321718/ 6805 (37105) – http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/6688482985/ 6808 (37108) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/10452620756/ 6827 (37127) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/7927665708/ 6867 (37167) – http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/7904536598/ 68 (45046) – http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5947153238/ 83 (45142) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/7968610588/ 131 (45074) – http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/6334014334/ 1101 (47518) – http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5976987578/ 1109 (47526) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/8137577697/ 1629 (47047) – http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/6659455677/ 1863 (47213) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/8282595677/ 1981 (47279) – http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5560725898/ 76006 – http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/10684944146/ 76007 – http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/6220017798/ 76018 (76035) – http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/6776434588/
RMweb Premium melmerby Posted March 4, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 4, 2014 (edited) Do not know Keith, I have it recorded four times in Derby works logs during 1975 (26/1/75, 23/2/75, 11/5/75 and 19/10/75) Definitely a mystery! Maybe it was renumbered for some reason? I found another source that said 47592 was cut November 66. I remember during my spotting days (mid 50s - early 60s) that Derby works quite often had some long withdrawn locos hiding out the back waiting to be cut up. I wonder whether the recorded scrap dates tied up with the actual dates they were cut? (I don't think this would apply in this case however!) Cheers Keith Edited March 4, 2014 by melmerby

Cheers Keith I think it more likely that the 3F was one of the preserved ones and it had had a bunker swap at some time in the past (they rotted pretty well!) and as a result the old number was showing through. JeffP
On this day in history...my first ever club trip, Crewe. 1966 Sadly, no photos, or records, other than the memories. Going over the Pennines, I was seated next to a lad no-one else wanted to sit next to...as the youngest on the trip, not quite 14, I found out why when he neatly vomited between his knees. The rank smell stayed with us all day on the coach. We started at Stockport Edgely depot and awaited the arrival of Bittern on a special. This took over two hours and was instead of a couple of other sheds. Next shed was Northwich, Standard class 2 78xxx and 84xxx. On to Crewe South, which was packed with Britannias...long lines of them, so many that we didn't realise that 70000 herself was there until we checked our notebooks later. A few of the younger lads did the diesel depot too, it was very new and there were loads of named class 40's on shed. The older lads mocked us for spotting diesels. Lastly, Crewe works......I remember being in the paintshops, when the first lads out of the door set up a shout..."Clan!!!" It wasn't, it was a sad looking Duke of Gloucester, awaiting a decision on it's fate...a decision which wasn't good. The works was still repairing steam locos, but the only namers were a couple of Jubilees and two Britannias. I did have my dad's camera and a transparency film in it, but when he found out I'd used the entire 36 exposures, he contrived to "lose" the film. Fine, warm day, the coach radio playing "These Boots were made for Walking", Nancy Sinatra, and "Mirror Mirror", Pinkerton's Colours Funny what sticks in your mind almost fifty years later.......yet I have difficulty remembering to do things over a couple of days now. Made my first trip to Crewe (my 11th birthday treat) in March 1967 and still remember my walk round Crewe South full of steam, with the Brits having painted nameplates. The depot also had quite a few of the more unusual diesel shunters of the time which were about to become victims of the first of the great diesel purges between 1967-69 which weeded out all of the odds and sods, non standard shunters and really unsuccessful early diesel classes (classes 16, 21, 22, 23, 28), with a number being withdrawn before the actual end of steam

johnw1
On this day in History - Day Excursion to Plymouth - 11th March 1972 One way in the early 1970’s of travelling to interesting railway destinations on the cheap was to become a Notts County Football Club supporter for the day and use their football special train (Footex). Being in the old Division 3 at this time meant little risk of football hooligans and some interesting railway destinations. On this day thirty eight years ago Notts County played Plymouth away and I used the Magpies Footex for a trip to the South West and back with traction being provided by Peak 95 and in lieu of the match a bus ride/walk out to Laira MPD. Rail-Online
Result of the match was a 1-1 draw. Nottingham – Plymouth Class 03 (2133), class 08 (3057, 3112/67, 3248, 3345/90, 3505/13/17, 3785, 3808, 4004/22, 4121/23/49/60/67/73/85), class 20 (8069/72), class 25 (5225/29/32/36/67, 7519/23/29/36, 7603/25/26/28), class 31 (5562, 5636, 5824), class 33 (6506/16/24), class 35 (7004/07/09/12/45/74), class 42 (813/24/66), class 44 (2/8), class 45 (16/23/30/47/59/69/75/85/88/94/95, 107/11/15/22/26/29), class 46 (156/62), class 47 (1540/44/83/99, 1603/08/23/33/75, 1740, 1805/33/54, 1910), PWM652, Steam (46201). Pobrien
50 years ago today was the beginning of the end for the Bristol Barrow Road Jubilees, 45682 Trafalgar, 45685 Barfleur and 45690 Leander. On Friday March 13, 1964 45690 had taken out the 1E64 8.40 Bristol to Sheffield, but failed at Gloucester. It returned to Bristol Barrow Road on the Saturday and was withdrawn on Monday March 16. It was in poor external condition compared to this shot of it on Fishponds Bank just seven months earlier http://www.flickr.com/photos/55350440@N06/5132591414/in/photolist-8PxSBq-9MreoF-98tLAx-9MrewB-9MrehZ-8XmEWa-bvugdk-gMBL1Z-bvug94-9egWm1-e9pNbs-8Px4kV-fc7Esb-gMBKXx-8PA4iY After two months in store it was taken inside the shed for rods to be removed and preparation for removal to the scrapyard. A group of young enthusiasts spent the afternoon of Saturday May 23 cleaning it up for its last journey http://www.flickr.com/photos/55350440@N06/5765018981/in/photolist-9MrehZ-8XmEWa-bvugdk-gMBL1Z-bvug94-9egWm1-e9pNbs-8Px4kV-fc7Esb-gMBKXx-8PA4iY Five years later it was still in Barry Scrapyard, mainly intact and awaiting the call http://www.flickr.com/photos/55350440@N06/6897260375/in/photolist-bvugdk-gMBL1Z-bvug94-9egWm1-e9pNbs-8Px4kV-fc7Esb-gMBKXx-8PA4iY Restored at Derby Works in 1972-73 Leander has worked on the main line frequently in preservation http://www.flickr.com/photos/55350440@N06/5765019771/in/photolist-9MrewB-9MrehZ-8XmEWa-bvugdk-gMBL1Z-bvug94-9egWm1-e9pNbs-8Px4kV-fc7Esb-gMBKXx-8PA4iY 45685 Barfleur was withdrawn just three days later on Thursday March 19, 1964. It was stored alongside the shed for two months http://www.flickr.com/photos/55350440@N06/5133017630/in/photolist-8PA4iY-9Mu3e1-9edS8x-9rbpo9-9Mu3c5-gMBL5X-9rbpoJ Here in happier times departing Bristol Temple Meads with a Northbound Express http://www.flickr.com/photos/55350440@N06/5765567082/in/photolist-9Mu3e1-9edS8x-9rbpo9-9Mu3c5-gMBL5X-9rbpoJ It was moved to Swindon in early June and scrapped at Risca, Newport. 45682 Trafalgar had been Bristol Barrow Road's last surviving Jubilee. Just outside Bath it fractured a cylinder and was withdrawn some two weeks later. Here it is stored on Bath Green Park Shed in August 1964. http://www.flickr.com/photos/60631240@N02/7844811384/in/photolist-cXdH7G-8u2gHw-fhhjSp-8tCDrb-kuLXJw-gMBL3T-8TQ5yK-fFMHdA-dAYZ9L-dvrX8H-gGRvu9-gRCZUf-ga2X6G-dfSqiE-fztQce-dsRyR7-ga2V8y-debQj9-8gmhpd-bgCiiK-jQezGA-aBqpRE-czUikY-bzQYFm-cbMBK9 On October 15, 1964 it made its final journey to a scrapyard in Swansea, here seen on shed awaiting its final movement. Restored in 2013 at Carnforth it is now a regular on the mainline http://www.flickr.com/photos/55350440@N06/10361570643/in/photolist-gMBKXH-e9pNbs
