johnw1
On This Day in History –Manchester/Bury/Crewe 28th November 1970. In 1970 the class 83 and 84 electric locomotives were all taken out of traffic pending an upgrade to there electrical control equipment. Most were stored at Bury and on this November day in 1970 I ventured north from Nottingham to Bury to track down these stored locomotives. This is what I saw that day. Nottingham – Bury: Class 08 (3029/34/37, 3404, 3769/71/73/84, 3860), class 20 (8008/12, 8101/41/92), class 25 (5270/74, 7585), class 31 (5655), class 37 (6718, 6809), class 40 (213, 385), class 44 (2), class 45 (26/75, 108), class 47 (1783/85, 1828, 1900), class 86 (E3158). In store at Bury were: Class 76 (E26000), class 83 (E3024/25/26/27/28/29/30/31/32/35/98/99), class 84 (E3036/37/39/40/41/44/45). Present were twelve out of fifteen class 83 locomotives and seven out of ten class 84 locomotives. Following on from Bury I paid a visit to Reddish MPD and noted the following: Class 25 (5153, 7548/94), class 40 (226), class 76 (E26002/09/10/17/24/35/40/42/46/56). My journey back from Manchester to Nottingham was via Crewe and produced the following: Class 03 (2386/98), class 08 (3032/33, 3105, 3279, 3585, 3984, 4035, 4143), class 24 (5008/89), class 25 (5203), class 37 (6964), class 40 (274/89/98), class 45 (45), class 46 (141/54), class 47 (1628, 1947), class 50 (405/13/34), class 81 (E3012/20/21/96), class 85 (E3074/81/86), class 86 (E3105/14/16/28/30/32/40/45/48/57/63/68/78/86/89/91). On the journey back to Nottingham I made a visit to Crewe MPD: Class 08 (3801), class 24 (5007/22/32/38/41/60/79, 5142), class 40 (211/29/32/33/43/67, 320/44), class 47 (1540, 1615/18/23/89, 1708/15/45/55, 1808/34, 1943/45/58/60/63), class 50 (406/07/14/15/21/24/26/29/30/31/33/38/43/47/48). Of note in addition to the class 83 and 84 locomotives was E26000, the original class 76 dating from 1941 which would be broken up at Crewe in October 1972. Also of note are the fifteen class 50’s on Crewe MPD representing 30% of the class. In this collection are a number of images of locomotives seen that day later in there careers. JeffP
It was a crying shame that E26000 "Tommy" wasn't taken into the national collection. As usual they acted too late and we ended up with a nondesript one.

JeffP
26020 (the preserved loco) definitely isn't 'nondescript', as it was exhibited at the Festival of Britain in 1951, at the Doncaster Works Centenary in 1953, and worked the the opening day ceremonial train through the Woodhead Tunnel in 1954. It is, however, as you say, a great pity that 26000 was scrapped. Didn't know that, sorry. But yes, I never understood why they scrapped Tommy, as it WAS put into store pending preservation. Even now, we see loco's preserved because they were the last one to get a Heavy General, not because they have any relevance. A good example is the A4's: 60009? A better candidate would have been Silver Fox, which held the speed record of 113mph for a service train. One hundred locos on Crewe Works and fift-six at Doncatsre. Amazing. johnw1
On this Day in History – Toton – 6th December 1970 On this day forty years ago it was out with the push bike for a sixteen mile round trip to Toton for a “bunk” round the shed. This is what was there that day: Class 08 (3021/29/34/58, 3249, 3345/62/63, 3400/02, 3514, 3852, 3996), class 20 (8009/13/42/43/44/47/66/70/71/74/77, 8125/35/36/42/43/57/58/60/62/63/66/67/68/72/73/75/78/83/84/86/87/95), class 25 (5171, 5232/42/45/50/51/52, 7508/15/25/36/56/61, 7605/20/51), class 44 (2/4/5/7/8/10), class 45 (20/46/55/72/85, 103/04/08/18/23/31/35), class 46 (140/47/52/58/62/81), class 47 (1513, 1629/85/94/95, 1802/04/29/46/49, 1964). A total of ninety seven locomotives present. Of note are 1513, one of the original batch of twenty class 47’s which did not often stray from the ECML and the ill fated 7605 which would be destroyed two years later just “down the road” at Lenton South Junction. In this collection are a number of images of locomotives seen that day later in there careers. JeffP
I was always amazed at how few Class 20's there were on Crewe, whenever I went. Is that because they were super-reliable, or because they were easy enough to repair on shed?
Rail-Online
I was always amazed at how few Class 20's there were on Crewe, whenever I went. Is that because they were super-reliable, or because they were easy enough to repair on shed? I believe Crewe Works only did severe accident damage, all other work and routine maintenance being at sheds or on Derby works. The N West had none allocated in this period so there would not normally have been any on-shed. Tony
pH
Even now, we see loco's preserved because they were the last one to get a Heavy General, not because they have any relevance. A good example is the A4's: 60009? A better candidate would have been Silver Fox, which held the speed record of 113mph for a service train. Now you're being logical! IMO, private preservation (which was the case for 60009) was usually a fairly emotional decision. 60009 had been a well-known Haymarket engine for most of its existence, it had been one of the small group of A4s which had re-started the Glasgow-Aberdeen 3 hour service in the early 1960s, and it was bought by a Scot and kept in Scotland initially. 60017, whatever its claim to fame (and I did not know about its particular claim till I read your post!) was shedded in England, and an early withdrawal, so Mr. Cameron would have been unlikely to have developed any strong emotional attachment to it. Official preservation, I agree, should take some notice of history and exploits. However, the most famous of all A4s was already down for preservation and, with so many other classes as candidates for preservation, they weren't likely to preserve another A4. Presumably the 15 shunters were getting repairs (or being stripped for parts in the case of the Class 11s) as these had already put in over a dozen years work. the other 23 locos I suppose were in for accident repairs and other sundry work - was ETH being fitted to the 45's this early? The 27 was being equipped for its push pull career. Tony

The 27 was being equipped for its push pull career. Tony ETH fitment to the Peaks did not start for another 18 months or so. As regards to the number of loco's present it does seem slightly low, however this may be down to the fact that I did not get access to all the works storage sidings on this visit although the three class 11's suggest I may have done. Also to bear in mind is that in the latter half of the 1970's the numbers of locomotives on the works was swelled by large numbers of locomotives out of service either "on decision" or awaiting for the release of the financial repair authority in the correct budgeted period.
