pH
August 8, 1963. I don’t have my original notes, but I can list steam engines (only - no diesels) that I copped that day. I was on a family holiday in Lyme Regis. I went from there to Exeter, visited Central and St. David’s stations and Exmouth Junction shed. Here you go – steam cops only, no diesels included (though I would obviously have seen them at St. David’s!) johnw1
Strange, no class 06 shunter for Glasgow Works in 1976. I thought there was at least one based here in this period. Tony I have check the other logs I have for Glasgow works in 1976 with the following results - 6th March class 06 NIL, 3rd April class 06 NIL, 5th June class 06 NIL, so the fact of there being no class 06 in August 1976 would at face value be the norm. RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted August 11, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 11, 2013 Up on Blea Moor to watch Cromwell and then south of Birkett Tunnel to see the two black fives. As we drove off over the top of Birkett Tunnel we looked down the Eden Valley and it seemed as if every banking and cutting was on fire. That to me was a truly fitting farwell to steam, going out with a bang. Jamie

johnw1
On this day in History - Stoke/Crewe Works– 17th August 1969 On this day forty four years ago I paid a visit to Stoke and Crewe. At Stoke locomotives were stabled at Cockshute and on shed were four class 08’s (3291/92, 3798, 3801), eleven class 24’s (5011/20/23/27/33/44/49/63/76/86/92) and one class 25 (5237). Later a tour around Crewe Works produced three class 08’s (3068/95, 3217), one class 11 (12062), four class 20’s (8061/67, 8188, 8303), three class 25’s (7555/61, 7627), thirteen class 40’s (218/39/42/45/73/75/77/81/88, 345/52/64/94), thirty four class 47’s (1501/02/05/06/08/09/10/14/17/28/29/48, 1617/48/77/84/87, 1701/02/12/32/39/44/50/60, 1811/12/58/63/86, 1919/37/60/83), one class 50 (400), three class 73’s (E6012/13/25), one class 74 (E6109), five class 76’s (E26006/16/23/28/48), one class 82 (E3050), one class 84 (E3045), one class 85 (E3077) and four class 86’s (E3111/13/52/93). Of note is the variety of classes under repair at Crewe works including Southern Region electro-diesels and the Manchester – Sheffield dc electrics which were repaired at Crewe following the closure of Gorton works in the mid 1960’s. Also of note is the large number of the first batch of class 47’s (nine out of twenty). After six years in traffic were they due there first general repair? Finally 12062 would be withdrawn eight months later in April 1970 and was broken up at Derby works in December 1971. A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. John I too had spotted this and indeed I noted myself that class 47's and 40's were often called to Crewe in numerical batches in the early to mid 1970s, reulting in much excitment on a Sunday visit if you needed say D1876 and found D1875...... Rail-Online
On this day in History - Derby Works Open Day –30th August 1969 It is the end of August and its time for the Derby Horticultural Show or to give it its more common name Derby Works Open Day. On the works on this day in 1969 were........... Just 39 locos on Derby Works! Seems very low compared to the mid 1970's when I wnt round, but I suppose a lot more locos were 'new' and the shunter re-building programme has clearly not yet got underway. johnw1
Derby – Birmingham ....................... class 33 (6507/34/51), ........ John, Please tell us more! Tony During this period there was a regular double headed class 33 duty into Bromford Bridge oil depot (adjacent to Fort Dunlop). I suspect 6507/51 were on this duty that morning. In respect to 6534, it was on Saltley shed (along with 6509, which were both still there later that morning) so may well have worked up the prievous day and for some reason not returned Edited September 1, 2013 by johnw1

JeffP
We would go to Scotland by rail in the early to mid 70's. We used to go round Eastfield, Polmadie, Motherwell and Haymarket, in that order, then home. We usually saw more than 200 locos in the day.
