On this Day in History - Colwick – 1st June 1969

In the latter half of the 1960’s I used to cycle out from Clifton to the large Great Northern Railway MPD on the eastern outskirts of Nottingham at Colwick (16B). By this time its once large allocation was down to a few diesel shunters with its main line fleet being provided almost exclusively by Toton and I still have the log for my final visit on the 1st June 1969 shortly before its closure. Following closure the locomotives were then fuelled at Nottingham and stabled in and around the carriage sidings and London Road Parcels depot. On shed on this final vist were:

Class 08 (3403/07/25/26, 3790), class 20 (8013/16/40/61/63/65/67, 8137/39/41/58/60/62/68/70/74/78/84/91/93/96/97/98), class 31 (5629) and class 47 (1808).

It’s a sign of the scale of the decline of the coal traffic around Nottingham that in 1969 the local collieries (Linby, Annesley, Newstead,  Hucknall, Babbington, Calverton, Gedling and Cotgrave, plus Staythorpe power station could provide employment for eleven pairs of class 20’s and one class 47. All these pits and the power station have all closed since 1969.

A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection.  As always feedback and comments welcome

ON THIS DAY 12th JUNE 1961 YORK

This was a particularly good day at York with no less than nine A4’s passing through, of note was 60028 on the down Elizabethan & 60031 on the up Elizabethan. Biggest cop this day was the first Deltic D9000 complete with front headlamp. I think from what I have read this must have been one of the the first runs on the up Flying Scotsman for a Deltic after been taken out of service along with all others that had been built at this time for cracked frames.

Excellent. Would that I had been a few years older when I did my spotting at Doncaster, and went round the works every 6 months. I also wish I'd had a camera, or permission to use my dad's.

You say that 60028 and 60029 were "of note"...is that because they were Scottish locos, and didn't get south of....?

I think you'll see I wrote "of note was 60028 on the down Elizabethan & 60031 on the up Elizabethan"

I mention them because the Elizabethan was usually an A4 hauled train and would on one of the trains have a Haymarket loco on it. On this day it was Golden Plover on the up train which would probably be on the following days down train. I do have a colour picture of 60028 on the down train but its a bit underexposed but of note is the white cab roof which was painted for the Royal train of a few days earlier when it travelled to Malton with the Queen.

Has JohnW1 got any more listings for Colwick ? - say 'on this day' in 1965 or earlier - 1963 ? It was a big old shed in its heyday

and the early diesel era is of great interest to many of us.

Great thread this BTW!!

Ok, my bad, don't know why I typed 60029...

Are they of note for being Scottish...I'm still not understanding, sorry for being a thicky....

Sorry Paul - Whilst I did visit a couple of times in 1967/68 I no longer have those records. On those earlier visits the main difference to 1969 were the diesel shunters, Colwick having at that time its own allocation of class 10 shunters rather than a sub shed of Toton using by then class 08's. Also there was one steam engine Departmental 29 ex B1 4-6-0 61264.

As an aside you might be interested in this sort of related bit of nostalgia I put together a few months ago. Apologies to those who may have already come across this before

Diesel Shunter Allocation – Toton 1967/68

In the 1950’s and early 1960’s British Railways built/purchased around two thousand diesel shunters which replaced considerably more steam shunting engines. By the middle of the 1960’s changing operating methods and the reducing size of the network lead to a surplus of diesel shunting locomotives. Withdrawal commenced with the classes with only a few locomotives however as the surplus grew a start was made on the larger less reliable classes.

I first started visiting Toton MPD in the summer of 1966 and in November 1966 Toton MPD had an allocation of twenty five diesel shunters. Over the next two years this fleet would be totally replaced and was also reduced to fifteen locomotives. The diesel shunter allocation in November 1966 consisted of four types of locomotive:

Class D2/2 - (TOPS class 03) –204bhp diesel mechanical shunter built by Swindon and Doncaster works between 1957 - 1961

Class D3/3 – 350bhp diesel electric shunter (mechanically a class 08) fitted with a Crossley ESNT6 engine and Crompton Parkinson electrical equipment) built by Derby works in 1955.

Class D3/4 - (TOPS class 10) –350bhp diesel electric shunter (mechanically a class 08) fitted with a Blackstone ER6T engine and GEC electrical equipment) built by Darlington and Doncaster works between 1953 - 1962.

Class D3/8 (TOPS class 11) – English Electric 350bhp diesel electric shunter (the prototype for the class 08) built from 1945-52.

These were numbered as follows

Class D2/2 (class03) – D2116

Class D3/3 – D3117 – D3126 (complete class)

Class D3/4 (class 10) – D3476/93/95/97-99, D3500-02, D3632

Class D3/8 (class 11) – 12038/55/63/82

Of note is D2116 which had officially arrived in September 1966 but despite regular visits at this time I can not ever recall seeing it at Toton.

The first change was the transfer of the four D3/8 locomotives in November/December 1966 with 12038 going to Speke Junction, 12055/63/82 going to Crewe and the withdrawal of four of the class D3/3 locomotives D3122-24/26. These were replaced by eight class D3/4 locomotives, D3446/47/48/49/50 from Peterborough, D3452/75 from Tinsley and 3473 from Doncaster.

In April 1967 a further class D3/3 locomotive was withdrawn D3121 and the first of the class D3/2 (TOPS class 08) locomotives arrived with D3029/36/37 arriving from Bescot

In July 1967 the remaining five class D3/3 locomotives D3117-20/25 were withdrawn.

In September 1967 the class D2/2 locomotive D2116 was transferred to Barrow

In October 1967 class D3/2 D3039 arrived from Derby

In November 1967 two further class D3/2 locomotives D3400/02 arrived from Cardiff

In December 1967 two further class D3/2 locomotives D3050 and D3997 arrived from Willesden and Bescot respectively as did two class D3/4 locomotives D3442/89 from Colwick however a start was made on withdrawing the D3/4 locomotives with the withdrawal of D3449.

So the situation at the end of 1967 was an allocation of twenty nine diesel shunters (an increase of four since November 1966) of only two types:

Class D3/2 (class 08) - D3029/36/37/39/50, D3400/02, D3997

Class D3/4 (class 10) – D3442/46-50/52/73/75/76/89/93/95/97-99, D3500-02, D3632.

This was to be the high point as over the next nine months twenty of the class D3/4 locomotives were withdrawn with the remaining one D3497 being transferred to Colwick. As replacements seven class D3/2 locomotives arrived, D3021/25/34 from Bescot, D3026 from Tyseley and D3340/45/90 from the Scottish Region (Thornton Junction, Dunfermline and Eastfield respectively). One class D3/4 D3490 also arrived from Colwick but was withdrawn one month later.

So by September 1968 in less than two years the Toton diesel shunter allocation was totally replaced initially by additional class D3/4 (class 10) locomotives which were in turn quickly withdrawn and replaced by class D3/2 (class 08) locomotives. Also in the first nine months of 1968 the fleet was virtually halfed being reduced from twenty nine to fifteen locomotives as follows.

D3/2 (class 08) – D3021/25/26/29/34/36/37/39/50, D3340/45/90, D3400/02, D3997

As a young spotter this meant during this period plenty of new “cops” on a regular basis. Whilst I do not have any photographs from that period I did record a number of the D3/2 locomotives later in their careers as seen below.

How far north did Barrow Road Jubes get?

I saw one (45685, "Barfleur") between Leeds and Sheffield at Wath-upon Dearne North Station, around 1962/3. It was on the southbound Devonian.

Would most have come off at Sheffield? I remember Jubes at York, but not Barrow Road ones, mostly from Liverpool (27 area), or Manchester (26 area) sheds.

The Bristol Jubilees worked through to Sheffield, Leeds and York on trains to the north from Bristol. There are references in the magazines of the early sixties to Holbeck using them north of Leeds and working through to Carlisle and Glasgow - a Western allocated engine in Scotland !

Ah, right.

We used to do what we termed "saturation tours", which aimed to visit anywhere there might be a loco stabled etc in a particular area, a bit like Dalescroft used to do by coach, but we drove.

Yes I did that too - best way to get the shunters as you could wait ages for one to return to the 'home' depot. Was not the Meldon Quarry 350hp there for years at a time?

Not having access generally to a car I tended to use public transport and my legs. For example I remember turning up at Newport one Sunday in August 1975 looking for 08859, my last South Wales 08, only to find out from the shed forman it was outstabled up the valleys at Aberbeeg. It took a bit of figuring out but I managed to find the local bus service and found 08859 plus 37235/40/95 all stabled in the yard at Aberbeeg.

John, did you have permits for all depots, or just rely on asking?

No permits, relied on my "gift of the gab"  and generally trying to look like a responsible person. This seemed to work for me about nine times out of ten. The one MPD I never managed to get past the entrance was Newton Abbot. Tried a few times in the first half of the 1970's and failed. Never did understand why as by then it only housed two or three engines anyway.
