Andy Y
RMweb and Model Rail join forces to bring a modelling challenge to our readers. This is an opportunity for readers of both resources to tackle a small project over the summer months and produce a diorama. The diorama should fit within a 20†x 11†footprint although it needn’t be that size or rectangular in shape. Scale doesn’t matter either; you could choose to do something in 7mm scale or larger for the first time or at the other extreme ‘T’ gauge or even smaller. You may even choose to turn it on end and have a diorama that is 11†x 11†in area and 20†in height. The diorama should be railway related and could represent a cameo of small detail in a large scale through to the foyer of a major terminus, imagination and creativity is the key. Your model can be static or operational and is not limited by any geographical or era boundaries. Focussing on originality will test creative skills and it is an opportunity to try new skills and techniques that may pay dividends in your larger modelling projects in the future. It is a challenge after all! The best way of entering the 2011 Challenge is to record your build process on RMweb in this forum where you can interact with other entrants, seek answers to any questions you may have and to fly your flag and gain a following of interested readers. Alternatively, if you don’t wish to register on RMweb, you can submit your entry with images via email to info@rmweb.co.uk and your entry will be entered into the voting process. The Challenge is open until 1st October 2011 at which point a list of completed entries submitted by that date will be published on 3rd November and voting will run until 3rd December and voted for online by RMweb and Model Rail readers based on the following criteria: • Visual impact • Prototypical interest • Originality Results will be published in Model Rail 164 and on RMweb. A progress report will feature in Model Rail prior to the closing date highlighting entries. A prize for the winner The overall winner of the Challenge will receive a prize of model railway equipment, books and DVDs worth £250 and a year’s free subscription to Model Rail.

bmthtrains - David
Hi Andy, to clarify the boundaries of 'railway related', I take it that this would cover any subject already featured on RMWeb, so train ferries, trams, closed/disused lines would be suitable entrants? David
Andy Y
Certainly so David; as long as it is tangibly rail-related.
KevinWalsh
I think I may have to chuck my hat in the ring on this one
DonB
Going to break the habit of a lifetime and actually get out of the proverbial armchair and do some modelling! Mine will be a Goods Shed based loosely on Hockley 1937/8, OMG, what have I done??? (I've been quietly thinking about this since Andy Y made a throw-away remark, some time ago, about not expecting members to keep churning out challenge layouts.) RMweb Gold john new Posted May 15, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 15, 2011 Sounds a good challenge to me small and affordable and I've already got an idea or two. Your model can be static or operational and is not limited by any geographical or era boundaries. Two queries - 1) scenic area to fit the box size of max 20 x 11 x 11 for the judged area no problem. However if you chose for it to be operational does it have to be a completely self contained submission, i.e. can it be designed so that other modules or a completely separate, detachable, off site fiddle area/loco train cassette system or similar can be fitted without that surface area counting? 2) Can it be something that is already work in progress or does it have to be a totally new project? Personally I don't mind either way but I'm sure I wont be the only one likely to want to know so I've asked now to avoid confusion before designing starts. Andy Y
1) ..... can it be designed so that other modules or a completely separate, detachable, off site fiddle area/loco train cassette system or similar can be fitted without that surface area counting? The 'module' should be presented as not exceeding the 20" x 11" but if you wish to design it in such a way that additional off-scene areas can be integrated after the deadline then that is fine. Anything outside the 20" x 11" cannot be included for judging purposes. 2) Can it be something that is already work in progress or does it have to be a totally new project? If it's a project which has not been already documented here or elsewhere it would be difficult to rule upon that but providing the criteria is met I'll allow it. RMweb Gold john new Posted May 15, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 15, 2011 Thanks for the clarification Andy. It means that the WIP one that I was thinking of for finishing/entering is ruled out (it has already been mentioned on here as started) as is the second option as that too has already had the concept mentioned on here too. So project (3) which has had nothing done on it whatsoever previously other than some thoughts in my mind when passing the actual site local to me of "that could make a nice model someday" is likely to be advanced. halfwit
I'm in. Its about time I built a layout/diorama of some description rather than just bodging locos together.
Del
So a station forecourt, with associated bus stops, shops, taxi rank etc, where the only railway item is the station itself, would be OK?
binesrail
I just couldnt resist! ive already started!
60006
This might just be the kick up the backside I need. Wanted to do some kind of diorama for a while now.
Andy Y
So a station forecourt, with associated bus stops, shops, taxi rank etc, where the only railway item is the station itself, would be OK? I can't see why not at all!
RMweb Gold traction Posted May 15, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 15, 2011 Oh Crap!! I could have a whole T-gauge layout in that space!! I know I've just finished the LARGE station building but even that only measures about 50mm square with the track canopy Mmmm will need to think a bit about this one. St. Simon
Hi, I think I might be on this as well, give me something to do over the 10 weeks of Summer 'Holiday ' ( ) I have! Have to think about what to do! Simon

Katier
Actually I lie.. I know EXACTLY what I'm doing!!! ( had a lightbulb moment).. now to decide which variety of Narrow Gauge to do!!
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted May 15, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 15, 2011 I think I too might have a go at this, not sure what yet though. Thanks to Andy & Model Rail for organising this challenge and the excellent prize on offer ! Stu
Kenton
I think I'll have to pass on this year's challenge. Dioramas just don't appeal somehow and frankly I can't see it being finished within the time frame (nothing new there then) just too much happening already during this summer. But I want to wish every one who enters every success and will look forward to watching and encouraging the undoubtedly spectacular eforts that will appear on RMWeb. Good luck.
Chris Nevard
This looks great fun and quite achievable (come on Kenton), and as Don B said, a great way to get the comfy chair brigade to replace the keyboard with glue, knife, paint etc. Of course if 12 volts can be fed into it even better because then you have a 'micro' .... (sorry, I've been desperate to use that emoticon).
RMweb Gold Stuart A Posted May 16, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 16, 2011 Right its time to get my back side into gear. I've even got an idea and been trawling the web for photo inspiration and potential purchases. Could I just clarify- is it the diorama itself that needs to fit in the dimensions stated, and any baseboard depth, fittings (such as hinges etc) falls outside of these measurements? Cheers Stu
Andy Y
The baseboard depth should be included within the 11" total height. Good luck!
Katier
I assume military narrow gauge temporary railways are fine? (probably given everything away now - lol)
Andy Y
Absolutely fine!
