16t minerals

Recommended Posts

I've posted this elsewhere, mostly for the Sentinel, but the 16 tonner behind it is interesting, well, to me, anyway. Clearly owned by Imperial Smelting it may have been converted to a tippler

The second shot (below) may show plated up side doors:

The third shows a set of four. Any ideas folks?

Seeing these iron ore tipplers at Wellingborough reminds me of a trip to Leicester as a boy. As we passed Wellingborough there was a rake of these wagons loaded with iron ore in front of the Wheetabix factory. My dad said "The stuff in the wagons is what Wheetabix is made of". My brother would not eat Wheetabix for some time afterwards.

What a ridiculous idea.

Everyone knows that Weetabix is cut from sheets of 1/2" chipboard. ;)

I believe these are the Imperial Smelting fleet of Zinc Oxide wagons 1001A to 1115A which were converted from iron ore tipplers, later becoming ICI Soda Ash POO's two of which now are part of the Great Central "Windcutter" set having come via Rover at Longbridge!

Doesn't that picture just shout "model me!" - it certainly has that effect on me; definitely one to file away in my "inspirations" file. Fabulous stuff.

It is a lovely picture.  Anyone any idea where it was taken?

From:

http://www.nrm.org.uk/ourcollection/photogallery?group=British%20Transport%20Commission

Don't recall this site being linked, but apologies if it has.

Tippler somewhere:

http://www.nrm.org.uk/ourcollection/photo?group=British%20Transport%20Commission&objid=1996-7038_BTF_GI01_13

Tippler seems to be at a higher level than track level, therefore somesort of wagon lift to get them up to the tippler?

In use for sugar:

http://www.nrm.org.uk/ourcollection/photo?group=British%20Transport%20Commission&objid=1996-7038_BTF_29_37

Presumably the same, but it doesn't specifically say that:

There are other interesting pictures of suger beet operations, but OT for this thread.

This one of more benefit re the tankers in colour, but part of a 16 tonner in view:

Class Y3 Sentinel 0-4-0T Departmental No.41 shunting on Lowestoft Quay 9th September 1959.

That 16T looks to have had the diagonal white stripe in the right place, only to be rubbed out, and placed into the top corner?  One for the prototype-for-everything file?
