Next batch of Class 70's

The Class 70 engine is derived from a Jennbacher type, which is an Austrian division of GE who specialise in industrial gas engines. If this is a known issue with GE's Dash-9 and GEVO engines it'd be easy enough for them to fit a butterfly valve in the inlet air system which would stop the engine pretty much instantaneously.

I had an email from a guy a couple of years back that showed some pictures of a GE power unit that had ejected a complete cylinder and piston assembly clean through the roof of the loco. It travelled through the air, down through the roof of a house. Part of the piston ended up in the owners plaster board wall inside the house whilst the 'power assembly' ended up in the garden!

I saw those pictures as well, the hole in the roof and the con rod sticking out of the wall (in the bedroom if my memory serves me right).

GE's aren't alone in that.  Farmers alongside the ECML regularly complained about deltic pistons getting caught up in their ploughs.  Apaprently the Napier engines regularly 'put a leg out of bed.'

Yeah, that's the one.

I couldn't find the email I had at one time but a couple of minutes detective work found this thread with some good sized pictures of the damage.

To be fair to GE (which will be a first for me :jester:) Legend has it that particular failure was because the fitters didn't torque down the hold down bolts when they replaced the liner and piston assembly! That FDL7 16 is 183 Litre incase anyone wondered.

I do quite a bit of design verification and standards work for marine diesel engines. We sometimes have a lot of problems with certain engine builders who argue that their industrial and train engines need not be adjusted to meet the particular crank shaft requirements, safety and shut down features, materials certification standards etc required of a marine engine. Invariably we get a mountain of documents arguing why marine standards are just pointless over engineering, result in a heavier and more expensive engine etc however it tends to go a lot quieter if you ask them for reliability and failure data for those items which they are disputing. Not that marine engines are perfect and I see enough reports of marine engine failures to be aware of some of their short comings however things like crank shaft failures and uncontrolled engine runaway are rare occurrences on marine engines.

Hi,

Colas Rail has confirmed it has now ordered 10 Class 70's for entry into service in 2014:

Interestingly, they will be assembled in America as opposed to Turkey

Thats not the colas livery in the link its the demonstrator (ex 70099)

Trust me the colas livery looks good on it!

I think coz its more of an angular livery with no sweeping curves it "fits" the loco better than powerhaul livery

Thanks for the tip. I have advised Jo that if he ought to get a reproduction fee. That magazine charges over $10,000 for a full page advert.

Thanks to Jim and Geoff for the heads up. It is indeed my picture, complete with the orange and yellow meeting at the wrong angle and using the older Colas Rail wording due to when it was created, before the Colas Rail Freight branding had been seen on anything.

I'll be emailing them later, $10,000 would come in very useful at moment ;-)

i think it may be a hose reel

For the fire hose - is that an additional module in the training manual for the 70/8 sub series then?
