station cat Posted March 7, 2015 Share Posted March 7, 2015 Well the Championship is now ridiculously tight at the top, 4 teams on 66 points, Norwich on 65, Brentford on 61 and Ipswich on 61. I was very pleased that Norwich bounced back with a win today, after our rather predictable, but still pathetic, defeat against Wgan. The other results went in our favour too (thank you Birmingham). The bottom 3 look like they've had it though, all at least 8 points adrift. Equally puzzling - Johnny Evans denied the charge, even though he was found to have spat at Cisse, and he was banned for 6 games. Cisse admitting spitting back, apologised, and was banned for 7! You're right - however disgusting spitting is, there have been some absolutely horrendous fouls which have ended up in no worse than a 3-game ban. On the other hand, there were 2 sendings-off in yesterday's Villa/Baggies match, one of which wasn't a foul, and the other wasn't really a complete dive, although Grealish did make an absolute meal of a very minor touch. Of course, any ill-discipline from the players was rather overshadowed by the mindless behaviour of a sizeable minority of home fans. During the pitch invasion, there were some scary close-ups of the type of person you wouldn't want to meet in broad daylight, never mind a dark alley. One such idiot had had the brilliant idea of sticking a phaIIus to his bald pate, thus saving us the time and trouble of thinking up a suitable phrase to describe him. A good time to start a winning run too. Hopefully Bournemouth have emerged from their dodgy run - they have dominated most of the games, at least in terms of possession, that they have lost and drawn this season. An attacking side under Eddie Howe but liable to suffer from the sneak counter attack but who would ever have expected them to be in contention. Could be a disastrous season in the Premiership if they managed it though but Bournemouth fans are at least enjoying the ride. Given the conditions at the Goldsands would the Premier League even let them in? Might be a profitable time for the lawyers. Norwich have tightened up under their new manager Alex Neil. How about a Wembley play-off final between Ipswich and Norwich? That would be wild. What would be the odds of Ipswich winning having lost home and away to Norwich this season !!!! Edired for spelling - must do better. Ipswich have got off quite lightly this season, in 2010/11 (the last time we were in the same division) we beat them 4-1 and 5-1. A playoff Final derby would certainly be wild - just getting everyone there would be a massive difficulty, never mind the actual game. I really hope it doesn't come to that though. Train journeys to Wembley would be a nightmare but just imagine the journey back as one set of losing fans set upon the winners in the same train. He left for Burnley towards the end of that season (where he appears to have set the foundations up for Sean Dyce's success) but then the successor management team let them slide to 6th place in the play-offs and defeat in the play-off semis. They then plunged to the bottom of D1 before Eddie returned from Burnly and they shot up the league. Many fans are in "never, never land" at the moment not quite believing their current Championship success. Eddie Howe seems to have the gift of "man-management". If Bournemouth (Boscombe to us elderly followers) fail to make the Premiership I wonder how long Eddie will stay. I hope he would choose the right club with the right board support if so. cary hill Posted March 9, 2015 Share Posted March 9, 2015 On the face of it the race for promotion to the Premiership is the most exciting and closest of recent years, but I think it indicates that there are a number of mediocre teams fighting like cats in a bag and none of them is capable of breaking free of the pack. We (Leicester) had 80 points from 35 games at this stage last season and were 17 points clear of 3rd placed Derby, not that it did us the slightest bit of good, as we've only got 18 points in the Premiership this season and will be returning to "the cats in a bag" Championship very shortly Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Although I was in agreement with his appointment, I was warned by a few Derby fans that he would plateau out at some stage, I honestly didn't think it would be this early. He shows great tactical naivety, and then, unforgivably in my eyes, individually blames and shames players for faults on the radio immediately after the match. What I don't understand is why players want to come and play for him because he is a good manager, more like he's blinded to their faults and SUFC is a nice meal ticket at the moment. With a team of Scottish second string players, and the remainder from Blackpool who are already doomed, what more should I expect?, a damned good arse kicking from the manager and the showing of a bit of humility that it's not only the players on the pitch that are at fault. I have to admit that Nigel did have a knack of naming and shaming players on Radio Derby too. Not something I agreed with either. He is definitely too defensive at the end of games and invites pressure with his substitutions sometimes. You seem to be assembling a team of Rams old boys with Brayford, Freeman, McEveley, Coutts and Ben and Steve Davies. AndrewC Posted March 12, 2015 Share Posted March 12, 2015 A few years ago when millwall were in League 1 there was a fear that relegation to league 2 would be the death knell for the club. The New Den being more valuable to developers than keeping the club operational. I think its days are numbered now as their fan base is dwindling and revenues falling. Relegation this year would probably lead to a double drop unless someone pours a shed load of cash into the club. Failing that we'd likely see them vanish from the league in 3 or 4 more seasons. Of course, there's now a very real possibility that there will be no English clubs at all in the quarter-finals of the CL. If that is so, and the same happens again, how long before UEFA decide that there shouldn't be 4 English teams in the competition? I've long thought the Championship far more interesting to watch than the Premiership, if only because there is so much variation within it, and nobody really knows whether the team that's on top in any given week is still going to be there four or six games later. Much to my disgust, Watford appear to be having a blinder of a season and are in danger of being promoted. This completely scuppers my theory that they are not good enough to rise to the Premiership, but not bad enough to be relegated to League One.
