RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted May 31, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 31, 2018 It looks lovely Dave. Southern lined green is a splendid looking livery. The lining in areas such as steps is very tricky indeed and not for the faint hearted and your results do you credit. I have previously used a cocktail stick to gently reduce the thickness on painted lining I have applied....which could explain why I now model 1950s British Railways... RMweb Premium DLT Posted May 31, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 31, 2018 I think at last I've got this step-lining malarky hacked, I'll post some more pictures when its done. Cheers, Dave.
RMweb Premium Popular Post DLT Posted June 5, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted June 5, 2018 (edited) Right, its finished enough for photographing, so this is where I go a bit mad. Hope you will indulge me with a lot of photos, as I usually can't decide which ones to leave out! There's still a bit missing, no prizes for spotting it (or NOT spotting it...) RMweb Premium DLT Posted June 5, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted June 5, 2018 (edited) Ok, here's a few more, including a couple of close-ups. Recently picked up an LSWR whistle from Markits. A very nice bit of turned brass, better than a whitemetal offering. The missing bit is very obvious in this photo: Cheers, Dave. PS Click for bigger images. N15class
Excellent Dave. You've captured the prototype just about right. I'm looking forward to a 7mm one when finney7 get it done.
RMweb Premium DLT Posted June 5, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted June 5, 2018 Quick query, should the cab spectacles be polished brass?
gz3xzf
Quick query, should the cab spectacles be polished brass? Hi Dave I have taken a look at some photos via Google and it doesn't look like they are, even on the LSWR liveried ones, but it is only my opinion from looking at B&W photos. The safety valves on the other hand do look like they were not painted in many of the photos, so would be brass coloured, but they tend to tarnish due to the heat. Jack P
Quick query, should the cab spectacles be polished brass? I can't provide a definite answer, but if you look at the Hornby rendition of the T9 and the M7, they both have them in polished (painted) brass. I'm not sure how important the engine needed to be for them to have polished plates, although if they went to all the effort of lining them out, surely they would polish them too? RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted June 6, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 6, 2018 That looks lovely, Dave. Six weeks ago it was shuffling up and down Mutton. Now look at it! Top drawer. Rob.

RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted June 6, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 6, 2018 (edited) They are such elegant locos, so where's the layout we can see it running on? Edited June 6, 2018 by PaulRhB
RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted June 6, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 6, 2018 They are such elegant locos Agree absolutely, almost delicate, like early Johnson 4-4-0s on the Midland or Billinton B2s on the Brighton. And this is a superb rendition. Reminds us how good olive can look.
RMweb Premium DLT Posted June 6, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted June 6, 2018 (edited) Thanks for all the glowing comments guys, I have to admit I'm really pleased with the result. Regarding the brasswork, I haven't scraped the paint off the safety valves yet, but I HAVE made up the missing bits. If you haven't spotted what was missing, here they are: The pipes that run along the tender valance each side, vacuum and steam-heat? And here's one loosely fitted: Pipes were included as part of the Hornby tender, but one side was broken and the other was far from straight. As they were made of a flexible plastic that is impossible to straighten, I've substituted straight brass wire with soldered brackets. Cheers, Dave. Jack P
Dave, Those are extremely fine, what size brass bits did you use for the strapping? I agree that the Hornby one is a bit difficult, seems to be resistant to gluing or bending and is almost always not straight. The end of the K10 seems to be in sight! RMweb Premium DLT Posted June 9, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted June 9, 2018 Those are extremely fine, what size brass bits did you use for the strapping? I agree that the Hornby one is a bit difficult, seems to be resistant to gluing or bending and is almost always not straight. The end of the K10 seems to be in sight! Thanks Jack, I used 0.7mm straight brass wire for the pipes, with 0.6mm x 0.2mm brass strip wrapped round for the brackets. It was a bit of waste etch from the scrapbox, I never throw anything away! The left-over parts from an etched kit, like the strip around the edge, have a multitude of uses. And you soon build up quite a stock. I keep thinking this loco is finished, then I keep finding more things to add. At the moment I'm persuading bits of lead into all sorts of odd cavities, to get as much weight in as possible. And its high time that the loco was delivered to it's new Home Shed... Cheers, Dave.
N15class
Did you compensate the chassis? As I find you need less weight if you do.

As I find you need less weight if you do. No, its a rigid chassis, with as much weight as I can muster over the drivers. The bogie isn't totally free to flop around, it has some restraint. A couple of photos of the tender. The handbrake standard being that soft plastic, didn't survive the handling, but the kit included a lovely turned brass item. I couldn't resist a few more final photos, sorry if its overkill. Click for bigger images. Cheers, Dave. Edited September 5, 2022 by DLT 9

RMweb Premium DLT Posted June 15, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted June 15, 2018 (edited) Dear All, As this thread has now passed 50 pages, I’m struggling to find things on it myself. So there is now an index on the first page: https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/2359-dlts-sr-locos-n15x-finishing-for-jack/ I hope it is helpful, Dave. RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted June 16, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 16, 2018 Might be worth going back to page 1 and inserting that at the top of the first post Dave, or in a few pages you're going to struggle to find the index
