On the last fodder run I forgot once again to buy a bottle of wine

Chris, perhaps it suggests a personal 'problem' on my part, but this, I cannot comprehend.

I recently encountered a relatively inexpensive Californian (Monterey County), Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèrdre (a grape combination much loved in Oz as the "holy trinity") in my local supermarket. I'm not sure exactly how many bottles have made their way home but I enjoyed opening one this evening with some penne arrabiata.

Jamie, I am exceedingly jealous of your proximity to artisanal Cognac. Unlike you, my choices are confined to the 'mega-brands' that export in volume.

Locally, the vineyards (a little north of 45°N and about the same as the Charente-Maritime) are internationally known for their pinot noir. Perhaps not coincidentally, Beaune (Bourgogne) is at 47°N. There are plenty of fabulous red wines made here but distilled white wine is not their focus.

Yes Michael, the artisanal cognac is lovely. Our local vineyard/distillery doescit'svown but that isn't a patch on Jean Balluet's which is rich dark and creamy. Mostbof the other nearby producers send most of their output to the big three in Cognac, but there are other independent producers around.technically our garden is within the cognac designation. One of the farmers in the village still produces his own, as well as a really rough rosé that he brings to BBQ's, he also brings some fruit juice to make it drinkable.
