RMweb Gold Popular Post grandadbob Posted February 10, 2021 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted February 10, 2021 (edited) Good morning all, Snow still lying on the ground and more showers are forecast but there is some blue sky and sunshine at the moment. Current temperature is allegedly -2°C which would account for the icy scraping sounds from a couple of neighbours preparing their cars for journeys to work. It may increase today to 1°C but tonight going down to -6°C. Nice. Ice. Glad that The Boss retired three years ago so that I don't have to take her to work at 4.30AM. We're running short of milk but I don't feel like going out to get any as the road and paths look like a skating rink. Ambulance was parked beside house at the end of the road earlier then left on "blues and twos" but not sure which neighbour it was. I dare say we'll find out later. Parcel containing flat pack coffee table turned up on time yesterday but no swearing occurred as I've decided to leave playing with it putting it together until today....or tomorrow.* That will probably raise my BP. As a a matter of interest I might check it before and after.....something else to do after all as I still can't get the muddling mojo kick-started. Just had a text reminder from the dentist that I've got an appointment tomorrow to have a look at a tooth that I broke a piece off a couple of days ago. Surprised to be seen so soon but they had a cancellation. Have a good one, Bob. *I was hoping The Boss had forgotten about it but she's just mentioned it. Drat! Popular Post The Lurker
Greetings all from Sidcup where it is sunny through my office window and the sky is blue - albeit with some grey clouds coming in from the East, possibly bringing a bit of snow. We had a bit of a thaw yesterday which means that the roads and pavements are very icy. Last night Younger Lurker reported that he had watched a BMW 1 series try and fail to get up the road; this morning we saw the same one give up and reverse back down the road. It wasn't sliding all over the case but I guess the driver didn't fancy testing rear wheel drive up the (slight) hill. Our car (BMW also) has been nowhere for a while. Mrs Lurker walked the three miles each way to school and back as she has been doing regularly (she did a sponsored 10k a day for Jan and has carried on). She is not working today but I suspect she won't bother taking the car tomorrow either. Anyway back to work - have a good day all! 2
RMweb Premium Popular Post PhilJ W Posted February 10, 2021 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted February 10, 2021 Morning all from Estuary-Land. Colder than ever this morning and the possibility of the temperature staying below zero all day. Its an absolute necessity to go shopping today or its a diet of porridge, made with water for the next few days. I've just remembered that the screen washers on the car are empty, just as well really as it means that they wont be frozen. I'll be giving the car a thorough defrost anyway, at least twenty minutes before I move off. There will still be idiots driving about in mobile igloos to watch out for. 3 hours ago, iL Dottore said: Good morning all, And on that cynical and misanthropic note, I bid all the NUDES on ER a great “Hump Day” iD In this weather! RMweb Gold Popular Post The Stationmaster Posted February 10, 2021 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted February 10, 2021 Morning all, The sun shineth - of course it does all the time but at the moment we can actually see it although there are various bits of thin high cloud about. It tried really hard to snow yesterday with limited success as despite the low temperatures it melted fairly quickly on paved surfaces. Which brings me to an interesting weather phenomenon that Johnny can hopefully explain - temperature below freezing with the wind chill and hardly above it otherwise, windy, limited or no visible sun yet a good percentage of paved surfaces simple dried and were clear of any sort of ice except in a few odd spots. I've noticed this before where with the temperature really well down the cold no doubt reduces the humidity level substantially then we don't get ice but wet areas gradually dry up. Yet again no major plans for today and the recycling bin has just bin done so the next task will be to find and disinfect various parts of it. The food waste bin remains to n be done - unless it was dealt with in total silence. Have a good day folks and stay safe. 19

RMweb Premium Popular Post BSW01 Posted February 10, 2021 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted February 10, 2021 Good morning everyone Late On parade this morning, I just couldn’t get out of bed, I must have needed the sleep I guess. There is still a bit of yesterday’s snow lying about, but we didn’t have much and there’s even less of it now. The weather is cold, -2C at the moment, but the skies are blue and there’s barely a cloud to be seen. Today I’ll put the first coat of topcoat on the chairs and then I’ll attempt to design the last of the decals required for the TPO vans. As for people, skin colour, gender, sexual orientation, personally it’s never bothered me. I’ll make my mind if I like a person once I get to know the individual. Over the years to get a job done, I’ve had to work with people I liked and with people I didn’t like (thankfully not very often), sometimes you have to put personal feelings to one side and just get on with it. It worked for me, but then everyone is different and that difference is what makes us interesting. Stay safe, stay sane, enjoy whatever you have planned for the day, back later.
RMweb Gold Popular Post Tony_S Posted February 10, 2021 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted February 10, 2021 Morning all. No side effects so far to report from yesterday’s vaccination. As it is based on a chimp virus it seems to amuse Aditi to ask if I want some bananas yet. Our recycling has been collected. The council have postponed collections on roads with steep hills. The gritters are keeping the main roads open but side roads are like ice rinks. It has just started snowing again. According to their website Royal Mail have a parcel for me. If Paul the Postie gets as far as our house he has a nice gritted route to our front door. Tony 24

Well at work anyway, at 09:00 my desk moves 50ft to a new temporary position while they remove asbestos and change the ceiling. The eventual plans have changed and we are moving back to where we came from afterwards.. Bear has an old, obsolete thermostat. No batteries required. I wonder how much time and money was spent in deciding to leave you where you are? 1 hour ago, grandadbob said: Good morning all, Snow still lying on the ground and more showers are forecast but there is some blue sky and sunshine at the moment. Resident street brain donor was observed to drive 50 feet this morning before deciding that frosty windows don't help visibility. So stop on corner, scrape window (a bit) and try again. Doesn't drive off, as once back in car she realised that all the screen needs scraping - properly - and not just a little bit in front of the driver.... 12 1 2 3 3
RMweb Gold Popular Post Tony_S Posted February 10, 2021 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted February 10, 2021 It is reassuring to know that many ERs treat people “as they find them” and are not prejudiced by race, religion or sex. However some people are prejudiced and it doesn’t matter how good, intelligent or whatever someone is, the bigot sees the race, gender etc first. So while nice people have nice thoughts, some people have to put up with prejudice from those who aren’t. I used to hear on training days some very nice people complaining about how they didn’t need for instance Race Prejudice Awareness training as they wouldn’t dream of discrimination against BAME colleagues or students. I tried to explain it wasn’t about them, it was making them aware that other people might be treating a colleague differently . Even in these enlightened times medical staff have to put up with people stating they don’t want to be seen by a xxxx (insert ethnic descriptor) doctor. Newspapers of course (especially the trashy ones quoted earlier) love to find stories about some criminal receiving benefits living in a nice house. The main purpose of such stories is in my opinion not reportage of evil wrongdoers but an attempt to stoke prejudice against people look similar. 15 8

Hope all is well. Not MIA, Bear, just AWOL mainly due to BAABT (busy as a busy thing) so that by the time I get around to attending ERs it is time for bed and after reading all the posts I'm at least half way to inspecting my eyelids so actually typing something erudite, witty or informative is NAP (not actually possible). This morning it was -3C when I set out for the market at 0745 but the early start was worthwhile as I was the only customer there and thus avoided cockwomble gatherings. Tomorrow Jill's car has to be at Crewe for 0830 to have its MOT and service so that will be another red eye job - makes me wonder how I ever used to manage to be in work generally by 0715 and actually be awake. Because of all the BAABT activity I haven't managed to get in any workshop time for a week or so but today I fully intend to be down there as soon as I finish typing this so goodbyyyyy........ Popular Post Ian Abel
HUMP day. I'm awaiting the inevitable "storm" as it's been overly calm from the Long Island client perspective. Usually means something wonderfully alarming is going to happen! For now, I'll take the opportunity to casually work on the smaller items that take little brain power or resources Received a package yesterday (sorry @Barry O not that one yet!) that's NOT railway related. To whit, a set of 400-day clock pendulum suspension springs, blocks and fork! I have a 400-day clock that I've had for around 50 years, just an enjoyable time-piece. Hasn't worked for several years and was "revived" from storage as we continue to unpack in this not-so-new-now house. I decided to get the requisite part to get it working again. Obtained the repair book (another requirement) from the library, to enable me to correctly configure the suspension spring for the particular model. To CONFIRM that I'm as nuts as the rest of ERs, I also took the opportunity recently to successfully bid (at a respectably low price) on a SECOND CLOCK, mostly to have for spare parts - original thinking - only to discover when it arrived that it TOO only needed the suspension spring mechanism replaced to make it a functioning second clock! That, my friends will be the weekend workbench activity accounted for -20 and overcast here, we will be granted a high of a blistering -14 later, then back down to the depths of the mid -20s. Tally ho. 19
Popular Post tigerburnie
Afternoon all, just back from a hike through the snow, a satisfying sound crisp snow crunching under foot, very cold, but were wrapped up well, only go about a mile or so, but with drifts of over a foot deep on the path, it was a good work out for the legs and the lungs, now on a Bailies coffee to restore the inner glow with biscuit of course. One train travelled South West, I believe they are still running up to Montrose and then back towards Dundee, with a fair few roads affected by the snow, no idea if the bus is still running on to Aberdeen, I bet those mending the fallen bridge near Stonehaven are really enjoying the weather 19
