Gudevening all,

 

Mixed blessings across the board here.  The weather has continued fine enough for us to dine and enjoy outdoor drinks on the terrace.  We harvested more courgettes, runner and dwarf beans plus the first early potatoes.  The gardens are looking more than somewhat better but far from ideal.  Having only taken on the task earlier in the year we know it will be a full year at least before the fullness of our efforts really begins to show.  Another request from the other end of the block was received today for us to take over their gardens but such things have to be directed via the landlord's agent.  

 

SWMBO has made contact with long-MIA friends in Cornwall.  They are still west of the Tamar but have moved from the Penzance area where we knew them much closer to England.  He is now blessed with Parkinson's Disease and she with severe dementia.  Not good at all for either of them.  We are still awaiting the results of four family virus tests in regional Australia.  None has been into Melbourne recently but two show symptoms though suggest it could be "just a cold".  If Godson is positive his entire school will have to close and isolate.  If either of his parents is then he just has to stay home himself.  

 

Former Neighbour (Upstairs), she who I am supporting with the rent payments for now, has a new job starting in September but is meanwhile suffering from some mental health frailty relating to both the isolation and stress of having no income.  Plus the stress of discovering her online man was a total ratbag and cheating via the internet on his wife.  Together we shall get her through the rough patch and into the light but it may take time and a great deal of patience and persistence.  Two things modelling has taught me are those qualities which I can now apply in 12" : 1' scale with real lives.

 

Sister meanwhile has managed to score the first Trip Away From Home of the year with a few days in the Cotswolds along with a friend.  The trip had been booked long ago and was thought unlikely to happen until confirmed only yesterday.  I am champing at the bit to get out more but have to respect SWMBO being vulnerable and not wanting me to go any farther than I can avoid until there is a vaccine.  We shall work out a compromise I'm sure.  

 

It is time to put the Gwiwer in the shower.  Garden slime and the general grime of the day needs removing before bed.  I promise to emerge before anyone throws the soap in

A friend of mine who shares the same birthdate (who I have also got into model trains) came round at lunchtime bringing some sandwiches and soft drink so we were able to sit on top of the mountain enjoying our lunch, celebrating our birthdays and watching those things of interest running round the garden. Most enjoyable way of celebrating in these difficult times. It was also the first time we have met in person since lockdown even though he only lives on the other side of town.

Strange sort of day. Finally got through to the Leeds General Infirmary Cardiology dept.  Nothing on record so...dont worry about it they said..Nice to know but it has been on my mind since March..

Two more days off catching up for non-stop working during the more severe parts of lockdown.

 

Golf is planned tomorrow - weather permitting as the forecast here is of the damp kind.

(Junior NB has suddenly found enthusiasm for the game and has arranged this round)

Sat/Sun is a 2-day competition that was postponed from a couple of weekends ago.

 

As a result, Brownie points are on a downward trend, although Friday may stop the slide if the promised delivery of flat-pack furniture turns up and I set to work on it. And some kitchen redecoration is accomplished tomorrow before/after the walk with the golf clubs.

 

Going back to my work distraction, the strong rumour is that one of the locos will be replaced this weekend. Being off work for the next two days, I thought I'd take the opportunity to catch up with it on the last departure I'll see. (This is the 9th time I've seen/heard it and this was the best so far)

Yesterday's Picnic was had above the beach while the tide went out, the sea birds performed their floral flock dances over the marsh, and passenger carrying things rumbled along parallel metals on the other side of the trees behind us, out of sight, so I could not see if there were any actual passengers... Plenty of TfW services to and from Holyhead from/to Manchester, Crewe (for Euston - no SuperDuper direct train service, anymore), Shrewsbury, and Birmingham International (stopper via Shrewsbury). No interesting non-passenger stuff, this time.

 

14:00 Looking (roughly) NNW towards the Isle of Man, the sun just out of reach.  Puffin Island on the right.  You can just make out Penmon Light House in the Sound.  The blip in between the lighthouse and the island is the red Perch Rock buoy.  Yes, it is huge.

 

15:30 Looking west across the Lavan Sands, the navigable channel over on the far side of the Strait.  A few yachts headed east earlier towards Conwy and the University Research Vessel Prince Madog came in through Puffin Sound heading for its berth at Menai Bridge.

 

15:48 The nature reserve is just left of the old Glan-y-mor Elias Level Crossing keeper's cottage.

 

Today's news

It is now 22.20 and Website seems to be up and running again.

Wet and windy start to the day. Sun when I started this morning. Rain this afternoon, then again this evening.

Bike ride on the terrace fitted in before lunch just before the sun disappeared.  Some strong westerly gusts but at least I did not get blown off!  Fifes blown this evening.

How we miss them, nothing quite like English early small potatoes but you can't get them over here for some reason.  Back home (funny we've been here all this time and we still refer to it as home), we used to get them fresh from the Tamar valley - lovely!

Again I haven’t been able to keep up with proceedings, I’ve been to Newark to seen my mum and then watched my football team win. I hope everyone is doing well .

I’ll try to keep up to date tomorrow but I’m collecting a settee for a friend and delivering it to his daughters and calling off at  MRC club rooms with another delivery. Oh and Syds coming round.

Good evening everyone

 

Today we should have been going to the RHS flower show at Tatton Park, but like a lot of other shows, it’s been cancelled due to the current situation. We’re both disappointed, but we’re not the only ones who’ve missed out on shows this year. 

 

Like Monday, the site was off line by the time I tried to log on. Anyway, back to today, I had planned to do some gardening this morning, but rain put paid to that idea, so a bit of work was done in the cellar. This involved removing the shelving from the wall that used to have the modem etc on and clearing way other now unused stuff from the wall. This didn’t take long and as it was still raining I did a bit of drawing on the computer. 

 

It stopped raining just before dinner, so once I’d eaten I went out and did a bit of dead heading and general tidying up, until the rain once again stopped play. So I changed one of the double sockets in the workshop for the USB socket that I removed from the kitchen yesterday. Both of the 240v sockets work ok, it’s just one of the two USB sockets was faulty. So I can now charge my phone in the workshop if necessary.

 

I’ve never lived near the sea, but I was born just a mile or so from the river Mersey, I love water. When we lived in Canada, were lived by the St Lawrence river and regularly swam in during the summer. I like swimming, especially open water, I’ve really missed that this year and would love to be near the sea!

There's quite a few open water locations open. Junior NB has been to the one at Sale water park quite a few times in the past 4 weeks or so.

Nah - early Ayrshires are what you want. I’m surprised you can’t get new potatoes. We have no problems getting them here.

I hope ChrisF hasn’t had to deal with EOn’s help webpages though I suspect they may be straightforward compared to my trundle through the O2 phone help pages. It seemed like a simple query but two completely opposite answers appeared. I have a pay monthly contract. The upgrade offer (my phone is fading rapidly! ) looks attractive. I just wanted to know if I order a new phone via the upgrade option does it come with the SIM set up my existing number or do I have to do some activation process. One answer said they come set up. Another said no.  I think I won’t bother until I am permitted to shop again. In the past they rang frequently asking if I would like to upgrade, now they are only available to help in urgent cases due to lack of staff according to the website.
