Lockdown it is..... No. Boris spoke to a carefully-worded script and avoided the L-word. He may have some advice that certain sections of society in some inner-city areas are close to boiling-point already. We are being more strongly advised to stay home. All non-essential shops are to close (most have already done so anyway - the notable exception being the Guildford branch of a well-respected emporium) but we may continue to go out for exercise (no groups of more than two unrelated people though) and for shopping, medical and other urgent business. And we may continue to go to work if we cannot do so from home / are key workers. We do not need to download forms to go outside. And a review after three weeks not the rather longer periods of some other nations. We were steeled for something more severe. In the end we shrugged and agreed "nothing really new here for us - except being told off by the Head instead of by the teacher" Tomorrow it will be off to the House of Not-Much-Fun as ever. Its got an electrical fault but main dealer can’t get replacement part so having to make due. Somehow the battery is discharging slowly and is noticeable when left over weekend. Will have to ring dealer up tomorrow to see what can be done. We’ve got enough on with deliveries as it is without having to worry about whether the van will start, especially as people are self isolating and demand is increasing. Is he a member of RAC or AA? Next time it happens get them round - if they prescribe a new battery then buy one off them. A bit more expensive, but hopefully available and with warranty. On another note, are Chippies excluded from shop closures? They sell food, after all....

All rather academic now. 13 2

Thanks for the the advice but the issue is not the battery, it’s something ‘leaking’ or draining the battery. have be told it’s a relatively common fault but only fixable via a dealer who need to replace a part. I have one of the pharmacies old vans as my SUV (for shifting model railways about!) so we have that in reserve. Regarding chippies, I was going to call off at the gluten free chippy on my way home but it’s already closed! Any way bed, early start for tomorrow’s onslaught, Regards Robert 4
RMweb Premium TheQ Posted March 23, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 23, 2020 Well, I went to the big orange shed tomorrow find a queue down the car park, they were letting limited people in at a time. So I didn't stay I had other thing to do. first TES and Co the only thing I couldn't get was decaff coffee. Then more importantly to the doctors, where I stood in the car park and asked through a window for SWMBOs and my prescriptions, my small bag of pills and SWMBOs huge bag were duly placed on the window sill to pick up when the pharmacy assistant backed off.. Saw the first person round here waiting, at the docs for pills, wearing a mask.. I've ordered keel bolts and a few other boat building bits online to keep me going, I'll have to wait and see if the orange shed is "essential" it may be, as there is always stuff required for emergency repairs.. The motor scooter will have to stay off the road for the duration, but luckily the car and landrover aren't due the MOT till later in the year when things may have calmed down.

RMweb Premium Popular Post newbryford Posted March 23, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted March 23, 2020 (edited) Mrs NB's work is a hotel. They were planning on closing this Sunday anyway. They have only been serving food to the very small number of residents in the last week or so, as room service (tray left outside door) for a few days now. Currently there is a couple of Swiss nationals that are Saudi residents. Mother visiting son at a local boarding school that has closed it's doors for now. (I get the impression that they thought they were above the effects of CV-19 so did not return to Saudi when advised) They are not allowed into Switzerland as they do not have a home there. They are not allowed into Saudi now, as they are not Saudi nationals...... And there are no flights either. Mrs NB will be calling the relevant authorities for advice tomorrow. No news on my brother - so no news is good news at the current time. Edited March 23, 2020 by newbryford

Measures in place to keep workers apart as much as practicable, shift working considered. Not sure if our lot follow Boris's latest what the score will be for us - we have already closed the door to walk-in customers. RMweb Premium TheQ Posted March 23, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 23, 2020 (edited) I know when I was a field service engineer, I came across people who lived in hotels. One regular I met was positively ancient, a retired company director with no close family . He used to go to st Andrews , for the golf each year and then various other places as he chose.. Just what they are supposed to do I don't know.. Come to that if I was still doing that job i would have been classed as an essential worker on a contract for the MOD, I wonder what my replacement will do.. RMweb Premium Popular Post jamie92208 Posted March 23, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted March 23, 2020 (edited) Evening all, welcome to the wacky world of lockdown. We are part way through day 7. The good news is that the garden looks a lot tidier and some muddling has been done. We have not run out of toilet rolls and the shops appear to be well stocked. The local post offices have shut and we have to go to the Danglies to get to a post office (22 miles). The pharmacist tells me that there are no cases within the villages around us, a thing we are grateful for. The farmers are still working all day every day but their existence is a pretty lonely one, stuck in a tractor cab most of the time. Keith, it hasn't been a good day for you amd Mick I hope your brother improves. GDB, good luck and I hope that she's better soon. Bill B stay safe out there. At times lime this we really do miss Jock67B with his daily roundup. Goodnight all. Jamie Edited March 23, 2020 by jamie92208 7 7 3
Popular Post Simon G
Today I received the communication from the NHS I had been expecting, namely a text telling me I am considered to be in the extremely vulnerable category due to my lymphoma. This not only means I should stay at home every day for at least 12 weeks, but also that I should try to maintain the 2 metre distance between me and Mrs G. This is easier said than done. I have moved into the spare bedroom, but we should also avoid using the same crockery and cutlery, so I have put things aside for me to use. On the remote chance that Mrs G catches the virus, it will be incredibly difficult for me to avoid touching the same items and surfaces that she has touched. We have worked out a washing up procedure for this, and agreed that we won’t close doors, so that I can open them by pulling the door itself, and not by using the handles. I found a pair of the gloves you use at a filling station for diesel, so am using those to handle the TV remote control etc. I am now waiting to see if people like me will somehow get priority for online food shopping over those who can still get to supermarkets, as this is by far the highest risk to us, if Mrs G was to catch the virus while shopping in the supermarket. Initially I was really p!ssed off that I am at a high risk due to the ignorant and selfish people who have ignored the suggested protection measures up to this time. While I am still not happy, I do feel better now that Boris and co have taken the necessary action to lockdown the country today. The cynical side of me expects to still see the same number of dog walkers down our lane as we usually get morning and evening. The “one walk a day” will be almost impossible to manage or police, and large swathes of people will ignore it. I hope that I am wrong, but experience tells me otherwise. I predict a huge rise in reported cases following everyone going out over this last weekend.

RMweb Premium Popular Post BSW01 Posted March 23, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted March 23, 2020 Good evening everyone This morning’s Sainsbury’s Grand Prix was fairly successful, I managed to get about 95% of the items that were on my list. But there were still lots of empty shelves, mainly tinned food, so I was unable to get any of the tinned food that was on the list, but there was plenty of bread, so that was ok. But the coffee shelf was almost empty, as was the tea shelf. Luckily we don’t need either of these items as we have plenty in the cupboard. Once home and the shopping had been packed away, I made myself a muggertea in my thermal mug and then got changed before heading out to the garden. Lots more done outside and a few more plants that have been in pots for far too long are now firmly planted in the ground. I’ve still a few more left in pots, but these will eventually be planted next to the path, once I’ve dug up the old one and laid the new one. Once I’d finished in the I came in and Sheila hacked cut my hair, apparently I now look human! Stay sane safe everyone, goodnight.
