Not a lot to say here, but have just got to work after a visit to the hospital having picked up a new heel device at the hospital - a bit longer, and also a bit stiffer, in the hope that it will cut down on the pressure further up the leg - here's hoping. Anyway the overnight frost precautions on laddo's car seem to have worked as he was off just before 05.00 without waking me by cranking the engine forever - same again tonight I think. I've noticed the thread about nitpicking and criticism, and also other comments by people who are distressed by negative comments about their YouTube videos. Recently I received a copy of a book written by a relative. He is quite keen for it to be reviewed on the well known book selling website through which it is being sold (and it is actually selling). This book comes under the autobiography / faith genre. Now apart from the book obsession I really like the relative, though I just can't find the content of the book plausible). I just feel that the only positive things I could say about the book are that it has a nice photo on the cover and a very readable font inside. With my usual tact I did suggest to the author that it would make a worthy addition to next years Booker prize list. I have therefore decided that only positive reviews are sought and just hope I'll be forgotten about. Part of my problem is that I'm not very gifted in the creative arts and feel reluctant to be negative about something I couldn't do but I also prefer to be honest though. Has anyone had experiences of having had a publication reviewed by family or friends or had to provide a review under such circumstances? Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Not under such circumstances but possibly the answer is to say something while meaning something else - although that is not an easy task and does take a bit of word-smithing. With the stuff my offspring have written over the years for school and uni etc i have usually been honest in my appraisal, sometimes brutally so - because only in that way might they learn. I think your best answer here is to be equally honest with your relative and explain to him that it would be very difficult for you to objectively review the book as it lies outside your area of competence and beyond your usual experience. 1 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

All I could honestly say "well it was an interesting read". Trev. Matthew suggested something similar though I think he may have left out the word interesting. I did try to say something along the lines of being outside my zone of belief at an earlier stage (I think that was after the broadcast of the C4 documentary) and was criticised for having a "closed mind". Before the documentary, Sunday Newspaper and Take a Break (sold at supermarket checkout) articles I could have a joke with him about him thinking "The X Files" was a documentary. Part of this book deals with the death of my FiL. Aditi unfortunately opened the book at random to that section and was really quite upset at the content. Perhaps angered rather than upset. Andy York is happy to put them in the MarketPlace but I don't want to waste webspace or anyones time. I'm asking a reasonable price of $110 incl. S&H to Europe (or anywhere else) each. Aditi likes baking but a combination of work and study for the last few years have seen very few cakes appear. I make bread (bread machine not the proper way) but I've never really made cakes or teabread. Thank you for all the suggestions for coping with book review requests.
