Popular Post JohnDMJ
You could also give Highland Mist a shot. Shot it, but missed! Good evening all, Despite the best efforts of Deutsche Bahn, ChrisF and I both made it back with the rest of the herd on time late this afternoon. The transfer, yesterday, from Luzern to Mainz was somewhat hectic due to a couple of DB trains being cancelled and dumping their 'load' on our train. From Mainz to Köln this morning was bad before it started - our scheduled train with full rake of 1st, 2nd and Bistro car was replaced by an Ersatzzug (replacement train) comprising some 7 2nd coaches; reservations, 1st and any chance of refreshment were duly thrown out of the metaphorical window! (I did get my ticket endorsed by the conductor for refund [He offered so to do, rude not to, I thought]!) To add insult to injury, not only was the train some 5 minutes late into Mainz, it managed to extend that to 30 minutes late in Köln. All was not lost, however, as we had a 38 minute transfer but still had to dash to the other end of the platform than originally advertised for our train to Bruxelles Midi as they wanted to bring another late runner into Rhine end of the platform. All went well from there until I tried to depart St Pancras. When we arrived from Bruxelles, London's rush hour was just starting, so I decided to try out the Barrel Vault, 'Spoons' latest offering in St Pancras. Great; do some route planning to home. Decided to get the 18:20 Thameslink to Three Bridges, arriving at 19:10 to change onto the 19:14 Southampton service. Thameslink train arrived on time and not crowded so I found a suitable seat and occupied it. As we crept from East Croydon (on time) to our next stop of Gatport Airwick, the driver announced that some emergency works were being carried out on the track (some company, rail-related, with the initials NR presumably fulfilling their reputation which has earned them many nicknames based on variations of the spelling of their full name; several variations are available!) and that we had been slowed accordingly. Eventually arrived at GTW some 30 mins late thinking that my chances of getting the 19:14 train were nil. Wrong! Of course, it too had been caught up in the disruption and, instead of splitting at Horsham and running part fast to Southampton and rest slow to Bognor, it dumped all those wanting the slow Bognor service there and ran as a 12 car set fast to Barnham where it, eventually, split! Can't be bad, though, two delay-repays in one day! Eventually, now in comfort of own home and contemplating sorting the accumulations of the last 3 weeks. I may be gone some time! BTW, ChrisF, fully approve of The Tie and aforementioned T Shirt. Saw someone at St P wearing socks to match said tie and also a TL driver with a matching 'Lego'- style fob on his rucksack zip! RMweb Premium BSW01 Posted January 3, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 3, 2019 Good evening everyone Whilst I waited for the postman this morning, I decamped to the cellar and went through my kit pile. Over the last few weeks/months, I’ve picked up some bits and pieces to replace poorly cast white metal bits. So I added all these small detail bits in the appropriate loco kit. Once I’d done I went to the kitchen and put the kettle on(it didn’t suit me) to make myself a muggertea, when the doorbell rang, it was our friendly postman and he handed me 1 of the 3 parcels I was expecting, no doubt the rest will be here in the next day or so. So after drinking my muggertea, I then disappeared to the workshop. I spent some time on the lathe, on which I made a couple of sniffling valves for the G16 from some small brass rod which I have in stock. These were to replace the verypoor resin castings that came with the kit. Once I’d finished them, I drilled a couple of holes just behind the chimney and glued them both in place. I also glued the handrails in permanently, as the knobs I fitted the other day were now set. Just a few more little bits to add then I can give it a clean and then a coat of primer. Goodnight all

RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted January 4, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 4, 2019 John (DMJ) you should have mentioned that you would be stopping off in Mainz as there used to be, and according to Google still is, an excellent watering hole and restaurant nice and handy for the station, Weinstube Raugraf. I was introduced to it by a bunch of DB chaps several of whom lived locally and found it very pleasant with good food, ideal after a busy meeting in DB's HQ - but that was 20 years ago although it still gets very good marks on various websites. Shopping today was limited to Tesco and no passing 165 was seen, I'm told we might make Waitrose tomorrow.

RMweb Premium BR60103 Posted January 4, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 4, 2019 We went to the cinema yesterday. It's a place where they show films on a big screeny thing..... The kids saw "Ralph Breaks The Internet" while we watched "Mary Queen Of Scots". SPOILER ALERT: It doesn't go well in the end. If you've seen the opera, you know how it ends.

Popular Post chrisf
Good morning one and all! I returned from Switzerland late yesterday evening after two excellent weeks in a fine country with some good company. It will take me a while to catch up with goings-on here but I have already spotted Rick’s kind thoughts and those of others. Aw, shucks, guys! The trip to Interlaken in a day nearly went mammaries up when the Eurostar sat down at Dollands Moor for over an hour but by a bit of blagging and bluffing my fellow travellers and I persuaded train managers whose trains were fully booked to find room for us and in the end we were only an hour late at our destination. JohnDMJ has already mentioned the less than finest hours of Deutsche Bahn impeding our return home. A spike of confidence enabled me to propose a toast to absent friends at dinner on Christmas Eve which I am pleased to say was well received. I can even confirm reports of a smile on my face after the New Year’s Eve celebrations in Luzern involving seven illuminated ships, their sirens, two lots of church bells and many unofficial fireworks – oh, and some gluhwein. Keeping said smile on said face may be difficult but I’ll give it a go. If the youth of Luzern can skate to the musical accompaniment of Rick Astley anything is possible! Maybe there will be some more seasonal snippets from my holiday in the next few days … Today the task of catching up continues in earnest after a major fodder run. Oh, and guess what? There is some ironing. Holidays wear off so quickly. Warm thoughts to all in distress or missing, especially John and Sandy whose ordeal continues. RMweb Gold grandadbob Posted January 4, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 4, 2019 (edited) Good morning all, Dry but fairly chilly (for here) but no frost. Temperatures forecast to go up to 3 or 4oC today and there may be some sunny spells. Today I have to visit the medic as a slightly worrying problem has reared its head over the last few days. As Mary Queen of Scots may interest one or two of you can I put in a blatant plug for a book written by a close family friend. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Little-Book-Mary-Queen-Scots/dp/0750961511 Nothing else to report so I bid you farewell for now. Robert
I was interested to read this morning that one of the Ferries rumoured to be earmarked for purchase by Seaborne Freight is the former "Nord Pas de Calais". Also previously known as Class 99 number 99001 in TOPS. It's obviously a little difficult to say anything without getting political, but after MyFerryLink collapsed, the Nord Pas de Calais was sold and has been plying its trade in the Southern Mediterranean for the past few years. If this ship comes back to the UK, given its age - I should have thought the company are certainly going to have their work cut out getting it to conform to emissions and safety standards. Of course, this could all be a red herring, but it's certainly interesting.

Time in Mainz was limited by our arrival at 1520 on Wednesday and our departure at 09:20 (supposedly, see my previous post!) on Thursday. Our evening meal was included in the 'package' so no flexibility there and a walk around the town 'sight seeing' occupied the remaining hours. (I believe ChrisF and a few others made use of the Hotel's free local transport card and buffer kissed one of the tram lines at both ends!) If our route take us there again, then an investigation is certainly on the cards, possibly including an ER 'gathering' with Robert, however, that may not be for some time!
RMweb Premium Popular Post TheQ Posted January 4, 2019 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted January 4, 2019 Mooring awl Inner Temple Here, Only 4.5 hours sleep, but the loss of an extra hour was due to me reading a book and not looking at the time... Distinctly frosty when Ben the Border Collie took me on patrol this morning, I started the car before the patrol, It had just defrosted by the time he finished. I've finished the first run of this weeks major system, there are almost always sections that need a rerun, but we've had to change a major piece of test equipment and the boss needs to generate a correction file for it. Without that, I have no idea which bits to re run. No note on my desk this morning, so I'm doing some current shunts from yesterdays list while I wait for him to turn up, (another hour at least). I notice that on TV /radio they are going on about the shortage of drugs available, on local TV one drug they showed in short supply is SWMBOs painkillers, just hope they have that in for our next order, she doesn't react well to drug changes.. I suspect this weeks major system will run into next week, so the users will no doubt be jumping up and down by the end of the day...tough... Tonight is MRC night, I'll be moving more of the layout down there onto the new transport carriages, that will mean more tidying up of the accumulated "stuff" under the layout. there will be less space available for such stuff after, so some will have to return home or live in the back of the landrover.. That's one shunt down, 7 to go, Time too... go see if any one has reacted on the Norfok broads forums I belong to... I post a list of the years local model railway shows in the equivalent of this section of the forum. This is followed up by full show details a month before each show and a reminder the week and day before.. Oh I need to post the provisional info for our clubs show in October on this site to..

RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted January 4, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 4, 2019 If you've seen the opera, you know how it ends. From what I remember about the lady in question, the main thing is that the dog survived. Anyway Good moaning from a cool Charente. It's bright and sunny again and is actually a little above 0 degrees. This morning we are off to the Mairie to register to vote in local elections. Apparently it should have been done before the year end, but as Madame Le Mayor was on holiday she's going to register is today. This afternoon I'm off to Ruffec to purchase a senior railcard for Beth. The fact that this has to be done at the station may mean that the task takes some time. Then we are off round to some friends for a meal. Meanwhile the jigsaw is progressing, most of the Harley was finished yesterday. Glad to hear from Chris and John and Thanks for the Santa Rosa photos Ian, perhaps I'll ride it one day. Regards to all. Jamie
