Some of ours still make Calvados. I've had some. I begged for death...

I guess there are two kinds of Calvados.

I've enjoyed it (one particular memory paired with an apple galette and good company at the end of a very nice meal stands out) but I imagine it can range into the realm of Norman moonshine.

My own preferrence is for tequila, usually taken with fresh orange juice, but occasionally neat.

The good stuff is best neat and sipped, but I am partial to a little fresh lime juice and agave nectar shaken with ice.

There are places that offer 'tequila flights' (similar to wine flights) as an accompaniment to Mexican cuisine. One offered these in test tubes in a wooden test tube rack. It was a fun presentation.

Morning all,

It is quite a mild morning in this part of the world - which is probably just as well because the heating in the office has failed.  The caretaker came around yesterday afternoon, grumbling that they had changed the circulation pump and it still wasn't working.  Obviously nothing has changed overnight because it is currently around 17°C - not perishing cold, but sitting at a desk makes it feel colder than it is.

Time for a coffee!

Have a good day everyone...

Good morning one and all

I enjoyed the gig by Jim Moray last night.  It is unusual these days for him to appear unplugged.  Today I shall pre-order the forthcoming CD, due for release in January but possibly in my hot little paws before C*****mas.  Later we will all discover how much of the Budget has not been leaked already.   Remember the old adage: he who expects nothing will not be disappointed.

If you are expecting pearls of wisdom on spirits I must disappoint.  Not for me is the hell-raising sometimes associated with whisky, still less the cigareets and wild wild women immortalised in the song.  Sunrise comes without tequila and rum is the wrong spelling of an island in the Hebrides.  What of vodka?  It figures in Polish cuisine.  During my visit to Poland in 2002 one dessert was fruit salad and ice cream anointed with vodka but you got to choose the vodka from the available range.  I chose Sobieski, named after Jan Sobieski, an elected king of the 17th century Poland who figured briefly in my A Level history studies in 1965-66.  As for cars, from 1976 they comprise one second-hand Mini, one new one, half a dozen Metros, one Ford Fiesta and four VW Polos - not all at once, you understand.

My bath awaits and then I must move the car from across Mrs Electric-Chair's gateway again.  Best wishes and warm thoughts to all in distress and recovery.

CDUs? You only really need one per layout!

Well, the model railway I inherited has around 30.... one on each point motor switched by a 5 v relay so only 5v travels from teh control panel.

Morning all,

And after yesterday's trip to The Smoke, it's back to my usual commute.

Tally for yesterday was the usual electric sausages + 1 x rail head treatment machine that whizzed past in a trice and some kind of green diesel (cl 70?) pulling a rake of polybulks.

At least my new(ish) smart phone allowed me to browse RMweb whilst heading home.

Sadly the cars I've owned have never quite measured up to some of the one's I've encountered through work. But at least when my lad was considering his options for a R/C supercar I was able to chip in that I'd helped out with teething problems on one of the cars on his list.

My list would include an 1100, Allegro, Escort (dire), Renault 19 and a BMW. The German car is by far the best so far, but I sort of aspire to a 2CV or Fiat 500 someday.

Anyway, got to dash. Have a nice day. :)

Chris

and the Name Sobieski takes us neatly back to Scotland, As two brothers claiming to be relatives of the Sobieskis and the House of Stuart forged their way through life, actually they were born in Wales and not related at all to royalty. But they were partly responsible for the Tartans being linked to clans, due to one of their books full of, as we may put it today, "fake news".

Good morning all,

Dry, breezy start and a mild 13oC when I took The Boss to work earlier. She is really looking forward to her retirement, as am I of course.

Good time had with the kids here yesterday and the carrot cake was deemed a success although I don't think it was one of my better efforts.

I need to look for some new hair clippers today as the current ones seem to be pulling it out by the roots rather than cutting. Also got to pick up some medication from the chemist.

On top of that I will be looking for a new phone as  the one I bought a couple of years ago is useless. Memory not enough so cannot update apps. What is annoying is that it has several built in apps that I don't use but they can't be uninstalled. Almost tempted to buy a basic coal fired not so smart one just to make calls however some of the apps on smartphones I find quite useful.

The German car is by far the best so far, but I sort of aspire to a 2CV or Fiat 500 someday.

Andy, mate, honestly?  You haven't forgotten to take your medication again have you?   :jester:

Have a good one,

Bob.

Hey up!

Sounds wet outside, too dark to check.

I aspire to a Bentley Mulsanne Turbo R. Quite nippy but not good on fuel (9mpg if you floor it). Best company car I ever travelled in.

I have more things to do in preparation for my visit to Birmingham.

More goodies to collect for the "shop", more info sheets to print etc. Of course I have some weathering to do for me before I set off at daft o'clock on Thursday.

Multiple war head thermo nuclear teddy not used....yet...hopefully a standard chucking teddy is the worst item to be thrown (IF at all)

Have a great day!

Morning all.

Rather breezy out. Not quite windy enough to make the recycling bags blow away though.

Not a lot to do today.

Aditi got told off by her Mum last night. Apparently I am unwell because Aditi keeps making me go on holiday. We are not sure what caused this statement but Aditi replied fairly robustly.

Morning all,

P*ssing down here and forecast to continue for the next 24 hours. The rainwater is coming in through the leaky roof, so there are carefully placed receptacles to catch it in the loft. I will need to remember to empty them every now and then.

Yesterday was also pretty poor weather wise, but that gave me time to fix the 2 non-working locos from the recent loft load, and also clean and lubricate a number of US HO locos from the same lot. All the non-working locos needed was a good clean of the wheels and some oil. Then I managed to do some wiring on the layout. With today’s weather, I think there will be more wiring done this morning.

Morning all from a village that has suddenly been blessed with some liquid sunshine.   However the last of the leaves appear to have left the trees.   No doubt I will be deploying the rake next week.

I got a good bit of work done on the layout yesterday and have left a lot of stuff to dry overnight.   Today is a relatively quiet day while girding my loins for the 5 days of a Warley trip.   Some modest domestic tasks will be performed but apart from that not a lot.

Regards to all.

Jamie

Further to yesterday's booze news I can confirm that Saisnbury's are now selling the 12yo Highland Park for £25 bottle so I liberated a couple. They're also offering 1 litre bottles of Courvoisier VS  (Not the VSOP)  for £25 bottle so I accepted that offer as well as it would have been rude not to.  :imsohappy:

Mooring Awl, Inner Temple Here,

The trip Home was slightly eventful, first was passing a police station where the police wombles had a line of their private cars parked half on the kerbs, this meant an emergency stop in the landrover, as I didn't see the police car with flashing blues (but no siren) until very late, coming out of the police yard....

The second was the usual parent wombles outside one of the schools. One parent womble decided to drive against the traffic as her side was blocked by all the parked parent wombles. Trouble was two double deckers heading her way, to eventually clear the jam, one of the double deckers had to very carefully go up onto the pavement, by which time a huge queue of cars were lined up behind the DDs.

About 6 hours sleep was had not too bad I suppose.

I've been extremely busy this morning, I started typing this nearly 3 hours ago

I've to go to book the Landrovers MOT and service on the way home, the garage is down a very long single track lane and a small family business..

Time to... measure another shunt...

Mawnin‘ awl. Wet outside but quiet, it being a bank holiday. Should make work easier, I suppose, especially after the SNAFU which peak hour yesterday has been!

Generic C&Cs as appropriate. Enjoy whatever you’re up to.

Jamie

It is not so much the five days of a Warley trip that needs loins girding, but the knowledge that come the Sunday, I shall be there to create annoyance.

Morning all from Estuary-Land. Bright and sunny this morning but a bit very windy, at least we don't have to worry about fallen leaves as most are halfway to Suffolk by now.

According to my mother, I've been drinking whisky since the moment of my birth. The doctor had a little difficulty starting my breathing, so took out the flask he carried in his little bag of tools and got a few drops between my blue lips. The cough reflex triggered off my first breath and I was away! Better than having your bum smacked, anyway...

Some might prefer a slap on the bottom. :jester:

Morning all,

One bin emptied already - two to go which nowadays means two more lorries will be making their way down the road (assuming both appear).   Big news from the middle of Week 6 on the patio front (next door) is that today they have started to (noisily) cut slabs; wonder when it'll be finished.

Next task is to take cat to the vet's for Stage 2 injection of his 2 stage anti-flea or something or other treatment - new system involving two jabs a few weeks apart instead of one jab as in the past (but at the same price  :O  :O ).

Enjoy your day one and all.  Now where can I go on the forum to find some fun and games I wonder?

I've just purchased a beautiful pine chest of drawers.

It looks great in the pictures.

Arriving Saturday when, I'm told, I have to make it myself!

Not only that, it's a two man operation.

Just bought a new oven too.

Let's hope it doesn't arrive in a bag.

I like putting together flat pack furniture. Just no more space to put any. I did enjoy putting together the plastic shed bought a few months ago .

Trains the last few days have been close to time for a change so no doubt but we are due a big FUBAR soon.

On the way in today I was looking up airfares for our Summer 2018 trip to west coast back via the NMRA convention in Kansas City (some interesting breweries to visit) but at £2,500 per person for the flights there is a change to our plan. west coast in March for a week then East Coast and midwest the summer comes to less than half that crazy price. Regardless of job situation we can still do both trips. Now for my other half toactually get her leave signed off might scupper the boing of the airfares.

No show this weekend but should be quite liquid with our friends from Cumbria but just got to decide where we go in London area.

Very windy here as well. Most of our leaves are bound for the Boring Borugh or Somewhere Beyond the Rainbow but our supplies are being replenished by leaves arriving from the Whelking Capital and environs.

I have to go out but would prefer to leaf it for another day.
