I had to use the choose and book system last year.  It told me the dates, times and hospital I wanted weren't available.  BiL (a GP) told me to use the alternative phone number they gave you.  Five minutes later I had an appointment at my first choice time, date and hospital.

In my case all of the appointments were for when I was on holiday. The chap on the phone said he didn't have access to any more but that I should choose the latest one available and hope some more appointments were released before I went on holiday. If not, then I should cancel the appointment, and another one would be posted to me 2 weeks later , by when I should have returned. In fact a new batch did appear before my holiday and I selected the one I'll be attending tomorrow morning.

I have already printed out my map to find the building the clinic is in and a list of current medication. If the consultant (or whatever rank I see!) asks why I have my other condition treated at Barts instead of Southend I suppose I should be tactful in case this one is best mates with the idiot who caused problems for me before!

Hi

More pics from Sarajevo, these from outside the Sarajevo History Museum of an armoured truck alongside a wagon that rips up track as it passes. The gauge was 3'6", I think, and the track destroyer has two axles - the third axle has heavy wheels that sit on the track to keep the blade below the sleepers.

Well THAT solves my track re-laying problem...

I wonder if you could replicate the tearing up of track with a 4mm model? If one were to build a suitable period piece exhibition layout, you could conclude each show appearance of the layout by tearing up the tracks. You could even raise money for charity by having the punters fork out £££££ to tear up your track deliberately (as opposed to "accidentally" destroying track by the injudicious use of a rucksack [or similar..])

Just a thought

Sounds incredibly complicated, bizarre and oh-so bureaucratic. What about the following?

CLINIC: When would you like to come?

PATIENT: Early next week

CLINIC: We have free slots on Monday and Tuesday

PATIENT: Monday, please.

CLINIC: We have slots at 08:30, 09:00 and 10:30 in the morning...

PATIENT: 10:30 works for me

CLINIC: 10:30 it is Mr X, don't forget to bring your GP's letter...

Simples?

The old system used to be

GP   I think you need to see a specialist. I think you should see XXX. I'll write to them.

Patient   Thank you.

An appointment then arrives from the hospital. If you need to change it you spend half a day telephoning (on hold) or drive to the hospital and change it.

Patients used to complain about waiting time to get an appointment and so the new system was introduced to give the impression of choice and to enable government to have statistics about how well they were doing at reducing waiting times.

In my case it is OK but I do have a computer and don't have a hearing difficulty. BiL GP has a lot of patients who don't have a PC, are elderly with hearing loss and/or don't speak good English hence why he ends up sorting it out for them. I don't think the system authors tested it on a real population of end users.

Best wishes to Don.

Well done Debs.

Meanwhile a certain member of the station household (not me or the stationmaster I hasten to add) had mildly disgraced themselves by not realising that the ice bucket challenge involves ice.

Aditi's first day in her new post went well though she did find out when she arrived that she is "in charge" this week. As everybody now has to teach she has looked at the vacancies in the department and could end up teaching psychology. As she was originally a geographer who then lectured in sociology and  has a doctorate in what is basically philosophical analysis of management I'm sure she will cope.

I reckon she’s an expert on “psychology”...............

Best, Pete.

She did teach a degree level abnormal psychology module at her previous college. As we are not very organised at home it is quite possible to find her psychology text books with some quite unpleasant topics shelved next to Winnie the Pooh.

Some of Freud’s books (patient accounts) can make your hair stand on end too...

Best, Pete.

Just finished making a card for the Wee Yin's 68th birthday (I'm the Big Yin, by the way). As he's a Wild West fan, I've used a couple of pictures off the internet of Crazy Horse. There are no properly authenticated photographs of the famous Oglala Lakota chieftain, so it's a later sketch based on descriptions by his sister and a photo of a huge sculpture being carved out of the living rock in South Dakota. My own birthday in three weeks; think I'll ask the WY to paint me a railway scene.

Evening all. I would like to start by wishing Jock well for his operation. I hope all goes well and I will eagerly await the next posting. My thoughts are with you! My thoughts and good wishes also go out to Don. I hope things improve.

Here in Derby it has been dull and overcast all day. Not too much rain, but you never thought a shower was far away. An early start and off to work to get some stuff sorted in the classroom. All trays, coat pegs and reward charts labelled up and one or two displays thrown together. I am not happy with any of them though as I had to reuse last year's backing paper. My new order has still not been delivered so it was very much a case of "make do and mend".

I got home from work by lunch so took Sarah and Amber out to one of the local garden centres for a bite to eat before we did some more house sorting. I finally settled down to some more planning this evening. The half term of Maths is almost sorted. Now I need to think about the English. That will have to wait until tomorrow evening as we are off to Twycross Zoo.

In bed and a bit grumpy because I can't have my usual nightcap! Just wanted to say that I'm more upset about the news on Don, than my own condition : thanks Tim and please convey all our best wishes.

Thank you to every one for your wishes - I shall float along on the way to hospital tomorrow in the knowledge that I have such support. I may be off air for a few days but I'll get a post in as soon as possible,

Kind regards,

Jock.

Pete, it's a T500 Twin, 500cc Two Stroke - c.1968 I believe. They handled like a 5 - bar gate with plastic tyres when they first came over, although the engine was beautiful - felt as smooth as an electric motor (Dad sold them in his shop!). Now look where technology has taken them!

Kind regards,

Jock.

Ah, Yes I’d forgotten about Neoprene tyres.......

Thanks for reminding me.

Morning all,

Bloomin hotter here than in Lagos  (and without the benefit of a/c)   Todays trip included purchase of base board material, tools &  a trip to a model shop with attached garden center.  Which has quite a nice G scale layout - sort of rabbit warren  with two trains (weathered locos & stock) by the local Garden Railway Club.

First time I've used foam-core board,  but as this is going to be a "micro" layout ( 30" x 18")  it should be OK...

Hope the day goes well for you all,

Trev.

Morning all.

Cloudy but not raining here.

Robbie has checked out the garden, I've made tea and tried to gently encourage Aditi to wake up. I'm off to Southend this morning for a hospital appointment. I suspect I may be doing some shopping afterwards.
