Beach Boys, ahhhhh. Sloop John B for me!  For some reason I don't think that sort of music ages at all, classic.

....

Preferred the B-Side on the single, myself: "You're So Good To Me". Back in the mid-60s, some of the Sheffield pub groups sounded pretty good on it, particularly if you'd had a pint or two of Wards first. In fact, the first time I heard the song was from Mike Shane and the Chevrolets in the "Black Swan" (AKA the "Mucky Duck"). Ah, Happy Daze.

Morning.

Thanks for all the 'likes' for the holiday shots, I felt I had posted too many afterwards.

Vinyl, Gordon?  Good man!  (Thorens owner - but just a cheap one.  Oh and a Dunlop Systemdek)

Morning all.

Sloop John B - reminds me of the Uni rugby days, when we would sing it en-masse after a few beers.  I used to be word perfect (if not in tune!).

I had a Thorens (TD150) IIRC, but not sure where it went!  Still have a Pioneer PL12D in good working order, and even managed to get a new drive belt for it about 5/6 years ago.  That was when I was digitising all my vinyls using a programme called Goldwave.

Morning all.

Rather damp outside. I think it may stop raining soon.

Vinyl wasn't really a suitable format for Aditi's love of Beach Boys music. I recall my record deck having a job ploughing through what looked like Marmite or jammy fingerprints.

Morning all from a damp Clacton,

Sadly, my first recollection of the 'Sloop John B' was from a London folk club - I believe it was a West Indian folk song originally. Joanna is a fan and I think my 'Pet Sounds' album was pretty worn by the time it was boxed with all the other vinyl. On that subject, does anyone have a good idea of how to dispose of a vinyl collection? I have the task of disposing of lots of records, along with my book collection, so as not to leave that burden for Joanna. There are a few rare ones - I bought 'Dark Side of the Moon' in Paris when it came out and it's a special edition in translucent blue vinyl with poster and postcards enclosed. CDs took over soon after so it has hardly been played! I should add that most of my collection is classical.

Gordon, an interesting discussion, post #68064 shows just what Stationmaster Mike mentioned in terms of colour. Having bought expensive DSLRs over the years, mainly for bird and animal photography, I was astounded at the results 'Big Jim' gets on his 'Down the tracks with Colas' thread, using an inexpensive Fuji DSLR which he just throws in the cab when he goes to work! I suppose the fact that we have to reduce the pixels to allow them to be posted on RMweb is a great leveller.

I know this isn't strictly the right place to ask but there are so many accomplished modellers in ERs that I wondered if any of you had tips on making up the SMP plastic based point kits. I have just discovered that I have four of these in a box that hasn't been opened for over 30 years and with a tight modelling budget, it would be sensible to use these rather than paying for Peco code 75.

Hope Sunday afternoon goes well for you all,

Kind regards,

Jock.

Jock,

If you wish to dispose of vinyl records and have some potentially 'good' ones (in rarity terms) I can put you in touch with a specialist in the auction house world - at auction you do of course pay commission but in this particular case you reach a catalogue of regular buyers who know what is worth going for and will pay for it  (it's where a lot of MRs R's rarer track and very rare demo discs happened to go).  Alas many LPs are next to worthless - depends very much on the band and which disc it happens to be.

For Gordon:

I've played with it in Photoshop but there is not much wrong with the original.

The fact that the subject is on the slant means the the dof needs to be deeper than on a flat, equidistant, plane which (I think) is contrary to the close-up requirement.

Maybe less reflected light and a longer exposure.

I may be talking through my hat.

He also saw the penguin parade.

The Little Penguins parade up the beach every evening to their burrows under the gaze of hundreds of tourists and carefully controlled lighting.  Whether you agree with it or not it brings in a fair few dollars.  Known to all the tour coach drivers as "The Ducks".  I have the luxury of being able to nip down to the beach any evening and see them come in without tourists or floodlights.  Not in quite such large numbers granted.

Having scanned back a little, I await Richard's (Happy Hippo) photos of developments on the South Horton Irrigation Tramway, I get lonely here as a large scale modeller.  Is it modelling?  Not sure, playing steam trains more likely.

Some of my old 'portable line':

Knowing my luck, this will be the day that Debs makes a reappearance!

Mike,

That would be really useful and worth a try, perhaps you could PM the details? Thank you for your help, now all I've got to do is go through the boxes and find the rarer ones!

Kind regards,

Jock.

Morning all - or something like that.

Just back from Hartlepool exhibition and I spent ...... erm ....... some money.

I must do a Gordon and sit down,  rationalise and flog of some my collection, much of which I probably don't need anyway.

Thanks for playing around with that pic, DD.  I did notice after I had posted it that the White Balance was set for daylight rather than the incandescent lighting I was using.  Having reset that and played around a bit, the results from the pocket Fuji still amaze me.

Jackie has been hinting (nagging) me for weeks to get rid of some stuff and sadly it was my golfing partner losing his wife that brought it home to me.  Boxes of stuff bought at a time when I had disposable income from jetting across the globe, most of which I wouldn't use.  At the time I thought things might be a good investment so had this thought that if I bought two and sold one later the cost of the one I kept would come down dramatically.  On the basis I've been retired seven years, that theory has proved to be unsound….as my mind was at that time….:-)

Back to our ER's song.   Bonkers!

This is a Gresley coach with the correct WB and a Heljan Kestrel which shows things are improving slowly…

That Beach Boys concert from Japan was great.  Been singing (mumbling) away all morning.

With a cupboard full of vinyl, I would appreciate your mate's address as well, Mike.  That's another can of worms on the list to do...

Tony,

When Matthew was little, did you make a habit of picking him up by his ears?

No but other children used to tease him about his ears at primary school. Well they did until he got fed up of following his mother's advice (ignoring insults, turn other cheek etc) and thumped the biggest taunter.

That Gresley coach looks very different to the one Matthew had in his mid 1990s trainset!

Afternoon All

Got a real bargain today at a local car boot - a function which we've started to attend as sellers most Sundays.  (An activity known as "standing" - a few weeks ago, I was looking round, and was asked by another stallholder "are you standing today?" - as I was on my feet at the time, this seemed a bit odd,  but after thinking it over, I got the drift).  A copy of a photo album "On and Off the Beaten Track" by Ian Krause and John Hunt.  It's an example of the New Approach (a la Colin T Gifford) and is in pristine condition - a good buy at £1.00.

Sun is now shining here, and there's a raft of outside based jobs which don't appear to involve the laptop.

It may be a bit late, but I'd also like to add my hopes that we hear from Debs in the near future.

Regards to All

Stewart

Morning (noon!!) lovely day here at 20, sunny and clear with a very light breeze, 13 the expected overnight low though, and will be record breaking cold/cool overnight/tomorrow. I like the weather we've got, but we're supposed to be averaging 32+ daytime highs this time of year...

Discovered last night that as had been feared/reported in various places, the PECO long-crossings are variable at best. Had success (mostly) with a couple so far, but two additional crossings to take trains to the goods area are running impossibly poorly (crap) - decided to NOT fully install and order two single-slips instead. Curtails track-laying until they arrive...

About an hour from picking up son and heading to one of the bar/restaurants that is showing World cup action so we can watch the final with a crowd.

My preference is for Germany to win with a secret hope they score a decent number of goals to provide some good action - we'll see I guess...

Enjoy the waning hours of the weekend everyone...

Hello all,

The World Cup final is on, and I'm bored ... however I can see the bats are starting to appear in the garden so something to watch.

Photos don't look too bad to me Gordon, I used to use a snappy camera for model shots, it produced far better results than my main camera.

Evening.  Thanks for the pictures of your sh....errr...tramway, Richard.  Very atmospheric.

Had a nice day, took Jayne and her mum to an open gardens afternoon in Peel, some we had seen before and some new.  Shattered now!  There was a lot of walking.

We’re not getting that really nice weather until Wednesday, Ian - shades of the Polar Vortex’s nicer side.....

Until then rather muggy, low 90’s - which even of itself is not bad for this time of the year. Threat of T-Storms until Wednesday morning.

Had a terrific dinner at a Staten Island Italian restaurant to celebrate my wife’s 50th birthday and on Friday had a quiet family dinner  for 21st Anniversary at a great Thai place in Bridgewater. Location sucked but food was truly great.

Arm/shoulder/back feeling so much better today! Hooray!

Wife and daughter gone to see "Le Miz”  (again) on Broadway. Personally I don’t really care for the “work”,  myself....

Here’s something that happened to me that was odd/stupid:

Years ago I visited MIDEM - that Music equivalent of of the Film Festival - with EMI in in Cannes, France. One night I had dinner with the EMI publishing company and sat next to a interesting guy from  New Jersey in the ‘States called Bob Gaudio, a songwriter. This must have been about 1979/80?

Anyway yesterday my daughter was gushing away about the musical "Jersey Boys” (which I have not seen but the stage show is apparently better than the movie, according to her) and I said I didn’t care for Frankie Valli’s voice, though I liked his performance on the later single: “Oh, What a Night (1963)!”  - so she piped up and said that wasn’t him singing on the single it was bandmate Bob Gaudio. “Eh?” said I - "I met Bob years ago in France and I know he wrote the comedic song “Short, Short’s”.

Of course it was the same guy and he actually wrote most of the Four Season’s biggest hits. The fact is he never mentioned this to me......and I never put two and two together until yesterday - nearly forty years later!

Anyway I found out also today that Bob didn’t sing the lead vocals on “Oh, What a Night (1963)!” it was their drummer, Gerry Polci. Btw Valli only sang the “bridge” section and backing vocals. I’m looking forward to telling her that, later, he, he.

So now you too know something only I knew yesterday too.....

Best, Pete.

Evenin' all (as PC Dixon was wont to say)

Just a flying visit at beddy-byes time, to say that today has been a bit of a dies non, since Sherry and I were a bit bushed after the barbecue. We got to bed something after 01 00, and didn't sleep perfectly. The evening had gone well, although I was a bit put out by late arrivals, meaning the big barbecue burnt away too soon. Nevertheless most of the food disappeared, and people stayed late. As much as you can ask for really!

Tomorrow is Bastille Day, so France is closed, but the local stuffed railway is open! We hope to venture out for a ride and a pique nique!

Hope all are well!

Pete.. you mean "the glums"... my musical wife isn't exactly enthused by it but as she says -- some people like it a lot and others do not..

Me I had a great time causing chaos umpiring today. Another cup match but with different rules to last week,, 45 overs, power plays .. the lot!  After yesterdays lack of umpire involvement (18 catches, 1 run out and 1 bowled) today followed the same format .. no LBWs.. a record!!

Busy week coming up so have a great week everyone!

Evening all,

Like Ian, just a flying visit as I consume the nightcap! Pleased the Barbie went well Ian, even though you suffered the annoyance of latecomers. I really hate that especially if you're doing a dinner party as it throws all the timings out. Hope the picnic is fun.

Pete, isn't it nice sometimes to discover someone who is genuinely modest? Agree with you on Mr Valli but then I'm probably known as BOF, the classical fan, to my grandchildren!

We babysat Amalie, the ten week old great granddaughter, for a few hours today and were pretty tired tonight. Not that she was any trouble, it is just an awesome responsibility!

Football was not as good as I expected and we missed the goal because we decided on some comedy instead - it's always good to go to bed having had a good belly laugh or two and tonight's were provided by 'Mock the Week'.

Worry about tomorrow's chores when they are presented.

I hope the week starts well for you all,

Kind regards,

Jock.
