I'm still drooling over the Lanky tank.  Needs a 6 pin decoderiser, and my local supplier is at Warley, humbug.  He's only just started keeping OO stuff as he's big in the garden railway world, I can't give a heads up though as I have an interest in the business doing work on steamers for him.  Don't want to get into trouble with Andy.

Ian, I'm not at liberty to say what I thought dorking was.... :nono:

I've got all this to look forward to in due course following a Vitrectomy, cryopexy and gas bubble insert earlier in the year, after I had a torn and then detached retina.

I can think of more eye watering "ectomys" to look forward to.  :O  :butcher:

Sherry and I are always pleased to hear things about Dorking! And, for the avoidance of doubt, I will re-iterate that Dorking is NOT a form of mediaeval punishment!

I thought it was some ancient form of high class pleasuring!

What a let down.

Regards

Richard

Evenin' all,

Just time for a report prior to the good Doctors appearing on the BBC our own ER's Doctor (iD of course) was on excellent form in the bar - and the exhibition - earlier today however the prize must go to Gruffalo who was sporting the best badge I've ever seen on any RMweb member, it was instantly recognisable even without my specs on (well it was quite big), and Eldavo also joined us for a while as well.

However there was also a model railway exhibition although i seemed to spend an awful lot of time talking to various folk some (all?) of whom reside on RMweb under various aliases, I managed to look at a few layouts but the pick of my bunch is linked at the foot of this post and is a perspective model which is fiendishly clever and was continually attended by a crowd 3 or 4 people deep.  Good mix of layouts but as is usual at Warley I didn't get to see them all and this year I took the precaution of not buying an exhibition guide so making sure that I don't know what I missed.  All as crowded as ever of course but the only queue I experienced was a few minutes to buy my entrance ticket - then walk straight in.

Alas I didn't get to speak to our Barry O as every time I passed his demo area it too boasted crowds several people deep - popular lad is Barry and deservedly so for his weathering but I didn't get a chance to talk to him about the cricket although Gruff had suggested it would probably not be best to do that anyway.

So overall a typical Warley - heaving trains both ways which always seems to bring out the rudeness in those traveling back to Coventry and Leamington for some reason; catering in Hall 5 a mix of very good (Alice May's burger bar) and utterly abysmal (the newly opened Oak Kitchen - which seemed to have about as much idea of their potential market as Hornby on a very bad decade); some rucksacks (will they ever learn, and I hope he wasn't badly hurt);  generally amiable and sensible crowds; little or no new r-t-r - with some of the box shifters concentrating as much on secondhand as new; some exceedingly skinflint punters overheard at various stands and who seem to think everything should be made for a tanner but deliver multi £ detail or finish and that £100 off sound equipped loco is a poor deal;  some useful traders (for 'Star' bogie wheels in my case!); some good new books; some good book bargains and a mix of layouts in sizes, scales, gauges, and subject, which is probably unequalled elsewhere on the English exhibition calendar - provided you can get close enough to see them.

Edit to add PS I was under the impression that dorking had been legalised at about the same time as muffin the mule was given the nod by the authorities.

Had a good afternoon at Warley only met a few ERs. I had a chat with Barry while Polly demonstrated weathering under his guidance. I chatted briefly with Chaz on Dock Green having been following progress on here. it was very good in the flesh. Bob Harper passed the control on his On3 layout for me to to the shunt and return to the FY. Always a pleasure operating Bob's layouts. Whilst doing so Owen and Sir William (he with the rather large Garden railway in Stationmaster's neck of the woods) turned up. I was impressed with Fencehouses which has come on a lot since I last saw it. I may post some pictures if they have come out well.

Hopefully tomorrow I may get a ride on the Echills Wood Railway before returning to Minehead.

talked to shed loads of people

not seen a lot of the show at all at Warley

Losing my voice (almost) and my passed apprentice (southern 42 aka Polly) not here tomorrow so I have to continue with the weathering..

Lots of people there today - I hope I get time to go shopping tomorrow (fat chance!)

shame I missed The Stationmaster but hopefully made up for that helping others--- Polly will be posting a picture of her efforts from today - which are very , very good!

Hope to see some of you tomorrow!

Nice video Mike - I've seen his work before...

We're getting bursts of heavy snow with whiteout conditions in a 40mph wind. Tomorrow the high temperature will be -1C with wind to 45mph.

as far south as Austin, Texas is getting an Ice Storm tonight. These conditions and temperatures are unknown in November (well, virtually...)

A middle finger to the climatologists...

Don't laugh it'll all be moving out into the Atlantic soon enough.

On that cheery note,

Best, Pete.

Up early for Day 2 at Warley.  More weathering ahead!

As one of our RM Webbers is poorly I am in temporary charge of the demonstrators this weekend so I have to make sure they are kept happy - which has been fairly easy so far!

So in those immortal words of Shakespeare ---- "Once more into the show dear friends!"

have a great Sunday

You were certainly busy on the several times I visited your area Barry, keeping your mind off the cricket no doubt. At least today that issue can be forgotten. Nice techniques, the few Parkside Dundas wagons I picked up yesterday will be treated to the ideas I saw.

Morning all.

I set the alarm early as there was a ballast train working off Diss this morning, it left nearly 2 hours early though so I missed it - and it was worked by one of the two TfL livery 66s (718) but never mind.

My Jill has discovered a new channel on the free view TV which has some old classics on it, so we are currently sitting in bed (with tea made by my own fair hand) watching (well she is) Little House on the Prairie ! I guess I'll be lucky enough to make her some more tea soon - and possibly even her breakfast

Not sure what today will bring, nothing planned at the moment,

Have a good day folks

Good morning all,

A bit dull & damp here, 6oC and chance of some showers today.

I'm a bit very bleary eyed after an exceedingly good meal & a lot to drink last night when my oldest friend & wife came to visit. Chris excelled herself in the kitchen - it's obvious that my years of advising her & training are bearing fruition. (said he ducking & looking nervously over his shoulder)

A quiet day is planned so hope you all

Have a good one,

Bob

Morning all.

Cloudy, breezy but not cold.

At least the loft won't be too hot today. The fan replacement shouldn't take too long, three wires for electrical connections and a few screws to fix it in place. The ducting connections are the same size but the new fan is huge compared to the old one.

I may even volunteer to clean Aditi's car. I'm not sure what she has been driving through on her commute this week but it looks like greasy slurry.

Morning all. Good to hear all the reports from Warley. Would like to have been here too.

Met up with my Australian friend yesterday, she who "retired" back downunder in September.

Seems her 3 week visit over here is destined to be repeated in about 8 weeks and then again for a few months in the summer.

She says you can sit on the beach for just so long before getting bored.

Good to hear that our company in gloomy November is more interesting than a  beach-side location in Aus!

Safe to say we're all chuffed here that our friend is not permanently on the other side of the world and we'll still be seeing plenty of her.

And on that cheery note, have a nice day everyone.

Andy

"..you can sit on the beach for just so long before getting bored."  Sounds like a girl I could get on with, Andy.

We really couldn't decide what to give my mother and MiL for Christmas.  They have most things, but as one is mid 80's and my mother 91, they enjoy getting out and socialising.  Whilst surfing the web this morning Mrs S came across a Christmas lunch on the Watercress Line and did I think it would be a good idea?  You can guess my reply…:-)

I hope young Mr H will drive smoothly as we don't want soup in our laps...

ET seems on an up at the moment.  Pointwork for the next board is built and I'm in the throes of cutting and glueing timber, so happy days.

Moening all,

Warley one day, a real breakfast the next - what more can a man want (don't answer that, please).  Incidentally my expedition Warleywards didn't involve much spending apart from books - one of which will go to the management to be wrapped in pretty Christmas paper but the other was a real find on the Ian Allan stand at 50% - a facsimile Newport District working timetable for winter 1958/59 the only let down being that it's only the passenger bit.  However for someone with North & West Line ambitions in 'the room' it's a handy starting point and only goes to show that a bit of delving can be worthwhile even at a show like Warley.

Today will I think be more restful so have a good one - one & all.

Morning, quite warm here compared to recent days, dry and no wind.

Thus the cars can and will be washed this morning then not sure.

Dorking Ian, well at one point it became my second home due to work with stays at the White Horse and Burford Bridge the latter being great in summer due to its outdoor swimming pool, stayed in a few pubs one by a private school near Box Hill cant recall the name of the pub but it was nice.

Reigate had some good curries there, great memories although it was all due to work!

Enjoy the day folks

I have never been to Dorking. Have I missed something?

I have been to Rio de Janeiro a couple of times and my favourite beach there (in January) was LeBlon.

I do miss Rio, though....but it is not the same anymore.

Question: Do people lose their critical facilities when discussing Bachmann products? It's amazing to see from the perspective of their past performance over here with regard to QC issues...

Best, Pete.

Morning all

Another cold, clear morning - but so much nicer than dreary and damp, surely. Of course it helps that I don't have to drive anywhere early, when roads may be iffy.

Deb and I would have managed about 5 minutes sitting on the beach - just not our idea of a holiday at all. All those planes from Gatwick suggest others' mileages clearly vary! Sitting in a harbour-side pub, OTOH, would have been a great way to pass the time.

Good to see that the weather is keeping Pete pre-occupied, and climate change looks set to provide him with such entertainment for the foreseeable!

Hey Alan - yes, the Snug in the White Horse and the pool at Burford Bridge both have fond memories. In my yoof I would climb the steep slope behind the hotel like a mountain goat. These days..... There is also a recollection, probably from 1963, of the snowy skool games session when we all went up that slope - and one toboggan failed to stop at the bottom, ending up in the road a bit battered.

Hope everyone has a restful day.
