No Alutite is not an epoxy adhesive it is like an "Aluminium solder" - it is most definitely not solder but for our purposes can be considered to be like a solder for aluminium. It comes in the form of a thick wire (about 1/8" diameter) and is bought by the metre. It's not cheap at ~£50/m but if used correctly is very economical so not actually expensive on a per joint basis. The way I use it is to "tin" (to use the soldering analogy again) both surfaces and then sweat them together. It uses no flux but the tinning process is critical because aluminium oxidizes immediately it is exposed to air. So, you clean the surface to be tinned with Emery or Wet & Dry paper immediately before use. Then using a blow torch (it's not a soldering iron type of job) you melt a small amount of Alutite onto the surface of the aluminium and using a very sharp pointer (I use an old Rat-Tail needle file) you scrape the aluminium through the pool of molten Alutite. Because the air is excluded by the Alutite it then sticks extremely well to the newly exposed fresh ali. You keep scrubbing away with the pointer until the Alutite covers the entire area of interest. Then repeat with the mating surface followed by clamping the two together and re-heating to sweat the two together. A very strong bond is the result if the joint covers a reasonable area. I have learnt through bitter experience 😂 that because it is normally harder than the aluminium it's difficult to clean up any "extra" that's kicking about so best to only get it where you absolutely need it (which helps with the economy!). There used to be a chap who supplied it who went to various model, motorcycle and car shows and also the ME exhibition although I haven't seen him for years. I bought my last lot from Permagrit tools, if you've not discovered Permagrit tools you've missed out particularly for woodworking they are fantastic - usual disclaimers just a satisfied customer. Alutite is not on their website but you can phone them up to order it. https://www.permagrit.com/ This is a little dummy speedo gearbox I built for the Beeza. First photo is the two main bits that have been "tinned". Second photo shows them sweated together. The joint is as-is with no cleaning up. It really does pay to go sparingly! And a quick sandblast in the neighbours cabinet turns it into a "Casting" just like an original Smiths job. So far no motorcycling Rivet Counters have spotted the subterfuge! 🤣 Hopefully that is of interest. RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted January 27, 2023 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 27, 2023 Evening all from Estuary-Land. The eczema has calmed down quite a bit but the sciatica is still there. I laid stretched out on the bed for an hour and a half, that eased it a little, hopefully a good nights rest will ease it further. Now to catch up with the rest of RMweb. 1
RMweb Premium Popular Post TheQ Posted January 27, 2023 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted January 27, 2023 Evening Awl, Bunny, happy , not... Sadly my precision is not up to Puppers standards, Object carrying parallel bits of metal was turned round. Two sections each around 4ft long. prior to turn every thing aligned horizontally, though there was a small vertical displacement of the lesser unit. Front down a couple of mm. Back up a couple of mm. During turning round , fixed the vertical displacement. Now one set of parallel bits of metal are correct horizontally on the front of the sections the other set at the back of the sections is 5mm ish out...!!! What was missed out was the considerable amount of time spent on the floor. Getting the major unit level with pieces of ply. Unfortunately the area of building it's on has a large drain cover beneath the carpet.. Frosty outside the MRC when we left.. Goodnight Awl. 3 2

RMweb Premium Popular Post BSW01 Posted January 27, 2023 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted January 27, 2023 (edited) Good evening everyone Once again, Sheila decided to join me on my visit to the Trafford Centre, but we didn’t spend anywhere near as much as we spent last week! It was fairly quiet, although there was a lot of young folk walking about staring into their phones instead of where they’re going! The afternoon was spent on the sofa reading and surfing t’internet, no purchases were made! This evening, to mark international holocaust day, we watched the film called ‘Denial’ about the libel case Lipstadt v Irving, which was definitely well worth watching, I can highly recommend it. When it comes to sausages 😋…I collect a dozen pork & mustard ones and a dozen tomato & pork from Harrisons butchers in Wigton, a large pack of The Peppery one sausages from Sainsbugs, divide/mix them up into portions (enough for two of us) for freezing and use the portions once or twice a week. A wonderful combination of flavours 😋 BeRTIe 17

I watched an excellent ‘How it began’ holocaust documentary recently about a team seeking to discover and explain as many holocaust victims as possible, they were working in Latvia & Lithuania at the time. The sheer lengths that they went to to explain what happened to the individuals/families made compelling viewing. The thing that shocked me most was the alleged level of complicity of neighbours/fellow countrymen in the vile acts that were part of the ethnic cleansing. Programmes like this have to be shown…lest we forget!! BeRTIe Edited January 28, 2023 by BR traction instructor 2 7 6 2
RMweb Premium jjb1970 Posted January 28, 2023 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 28, 2023 I've grown fond of cheese frankfurters, it seems to be an American thing which has been adopted in much of Asia, frankfurter sausages with bits of cheese inside. And arabiki sausages are excellent, arabiki is essentially a Japanese frankfurter but the meat is coarser (but nothing like as coarse as British sausage), they're often smokier too. Well worth trying. 1 12

BeRTIe For anyone interested in that dreadful period (and I think everyone should have an awareness of what happened) I'd recommend Raul Hilberg's seminal work 'The Destruction of the European Jews'. It's a heavyweight tome in three volumes, but very readable, and is all the more powerful in my view for maintaining a dispassionate style. 1 13

Is that a source for industrial radiography? If so those things are lethal, they can give a lethal dose and they look very innocuous, most people would assume they were just a bit of metal that had fallen off something. I used to be a radiological protection supervisor and senior authorized person for radiography in electricity generation to control on-site radiography and my nightmare (and the nightmare of most RPS) is a detached source getting lost. When we did our radiography training and refreshers with the health protection agency they always had gruesome stories with photographs of people who'd found sources and picked them up, not nice. 8 1 6

BR traction instructor
Re the Australian lost radioactive source…why hasn’t someone driven the route with a geigercounter in order to locate/recover said item…if it is that potent? I moved 6800 miles and am still near Ikea🤪 Initially I thought I'd discovered a hole in the space - time continuum as I walked through a door, on one side was Singapore and on the other was Milton Keynes, it was both exciting and frightening. Clearly the possibilities to revolutionize long distance travelling were quite mind boggling, but could this rip in the fabric of the universe foretell the end of everything? I still dispute the suggestion that maybe Ikea stores all look the same wherever they are in the world, a suspiciously simple explanation clearly designed to stop people asking questions. 6
