Morning All,

I'm a little later on parade this morning, having been to the town hall to take care of some administrative bits and pieces before coming into work.

I must admit to having abandoned shirt and tie in favour of T-shirt and shorts today. Yesterday's temperature touched 39°C at one point in the afternoon and quite frankly, that's ridiculous!

Have a good day everyone...

What's been happening that's interesting in DD's little world.

The chipmunk appearance of half of my head is fading following masonry work by the Dental Surgeon but more to come.

My nearest neighbour's son was in a head-on crash at a closing speed of 120mph and walked away with bruises from the airbag after being cut from the wreck.

I need to go and buy an adaptor so that my monitor can plug into the new computer box.

Two sunflowers have bloomed from seeds dropped by the birds which is taking the P in view of the amount of sunshine we've had.

Variable weather today - between dribbling and chucking it down.

Morning all.

Quite warm but a bit hazy still.

Aditi is back to work today. I'm not sure what I'll do today, but I'm sure "suggestions" will be made in the next few minutes.

Remaining cool yet Sunny here at an expected high today of 26C - following the trend of the coolest days since mid-June.

Found some acorns on the grass yesterday. Small tomatoes almost finished but the various peppers look to be a "bumper" crop this year.

I've already committed myself to doing some bush trimming.

Did 4 sketches of the church yesterday and realized how difficult it is in 3/4 view. The perspective is hellish but that is compounded by the effects on it of about 10 major earthquakes over the years....nothing is square.

Best, Pete.

Hope Aditi has her 'land legs' back, Tony.

I think she was more concerned about finding the car keys! The ship we went on was very stable so I don't think we even developed sea legs. The trip to the shore (Split, Croatia) via tender (one of the lifeboats) was a bit choppy but we were sitting down! Aditi was a bit concerned about the Bay of Biscay as when she last went there she was quite ill (though that was a November journey on one of the old P&O "Strath" liners).

Morning all,

Very humid here this morning, we could definitely do with a nice soft breeze. Had a nice result at work yesterday, taking the HOBC thingy from a possession at Kenilworth to Bescot and the powers that be let us run seven hours early with it, that doesn't happen too often! At 3,197 tons including the top 'n' tail 66s it's the heaviest train I've worked so far, with my mate pushing at the rear we had no trouble getting it to Bescot but I nearly slipped it to a stand on the rickety pointwork entering the Down Side Yard... very embarrassing!

The early finish allowed me to have a nice trawl through Brian Daniels' photo archive for the first time in ages (should have done some modelling instead I suppose...), I'd forgotten how many historical gems there are in his collection, and I don't just mean the locos therein.

Off to work again in a bit.... have a good day all ;)

SWMBO finally persuaded me to go on a cruise last year. It is not something I had ever thought of and, to be honest, still don't particularly fancy. (Un)fortunately said cruise had to be put off. I promised, so I guess I may have to go on one at some point.

I was very reluctant to go but I would go again. Having someone else do the driving was nice. I don't think I would have liked to have been in an inside cabin for 16 days though. Matthew and Aditi soon found the best times to go for a swim were early morning or while the early dinner sitting was taking place.

Morning all. Sunny and rainy in Edinburgh. Sometimes both at the same time. Interesting weekend, Jamie and I met a hedgehog, some heavy horses and some highland cows. Jamie was petrified of the (extremely gentle) heavy horses.

Annoyingly coming to the conclusion that I'm going to have to go and get my right ear jet-washed again. Had the left done last July (seriously? Seems like only last month) but the right's in need now.

Nidge - I saw that thingy a few weeks ago on the Newcastle-Carlisle line near Brampton and wondered what the heck it was, thanks for mentioning it as I googled it and now know! It looks very strange, like the wagons behind are piggybacking on each other.

Morning all,

rather grey sky today but very muggy and no rain forecast to wash it all away.

We've wondered about the cruise thing for some years as the 'being at sea' part of it has always sounded attractive but the organised whatevers all day and fancy clobber for some meals has always put us off. Hence biting the bullet the way we're going to do it on ship currently booked to sail from a cargo dock to we know not where via we haven't got a clue with a small number of passengers (which might not be a good thing of course) and 3 set meals a day but - hopefully - lots of interesting goings on to watch. According to this 'our' ship is currently going round and round in circles off the coast of Anglesey http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/default.aspx?mmsi=232647000&centerx=-4.642833&centery=53.3335&zoom=10&type_color=9

Oh, how delightful it`s the buoy-tender, Patricia!......I`m envious; a voyage on a real, working ship........I`ve seen her a few times on her visits to the Mersey, she`s such a good looking vessel. :good:

I believe she`s booked to service the buoys at the new Gwynt y Mor windfarm this week and next.

*Although one must be careful: sailing the high-seas 'tendering buoys' has previously got some people into trouble! :mosking:

Cruises with specialists for those with cultural interests, on boats with passenger numbers in the hundreds are rather good. Those who want the lectures, site visits, entertainment on board. and all that stuff, join in with those they enjoy; otherwise they may be completely ignored. For me the complete 'winner' aspect is that your hotel conveys you - usually overnight - from one interesting destination to another, many of which are problematic of access overland. The academic specialists on board can be worked hard to justify the accepted thinking, in view of the evidence one has beneath one's feet, which is rather fun.

Typically the dining provision is very flexible: yes, it is jacket and tie as a minimum in the main restaurant, but there will also be less formal alternatives where t shirt and shorts are absolutely fine. (Maybe your situation is different, but in my experience madam is just thrilled to be able to wear a succession of dressy outfits to dinner. Dressing to match so that she can have a really good time is such a small thing.) Do look out for 'free-seating' as the norm in the main restaurant though, the old-fashioned fixed table so that you are with the same folk for the duration is one to avoid. Quite often the company is so congenial that the evening simply flies by in interesting conversation.

One of the final entertainments on disembarking is spotting all the passengers on board of whom one saw nothing for the entire fortnight or whatever. Presumably they just sat on their balcony and had their meals delivered to the cabin / suite / palatial 'owner's quarters'...

I liked the mobile home part of the holiday. Also I liked not having to carry cases about every few days.

The 5 formal evenings on our 16 day cruise were OK. I'm not naturally a formal dress sort of person but it would have been a shame not to have accompanied Aditi to the dinners. She had purchased 6 posh frocks. Matthew had only seen his Mum wear a dress once before (at his uncle's wedding). On the ship we were on the other nights were "cruise casual", trousers, open necked shirt for men and I didn't read the women's dress code. I suspect some of the women hadn't either. I think although the dress codes didn't apply to the buffet restaurants in the evening I don't think poolside dress was allowed then. We were on second sitting in the formal dining room. That was my third choice (we booked very very late) but I think I would do that again. I had received advice from DD on how to request a change if the dining companions were unpleasant! We were very happy with the other diners and our waiters were excellent. We did eat in the Marco Pierre White restaurant on board once. Food was OK but the service was very slow compared to the usual restaurant. There was a pan-Asian fusion food place as well, we had dinner there once and lunch twice. Service there was very good.

We probably came into the "where have they been?" category. We did go for meals, and walks round the promenade deck but didn't join in any on board activities (except for the galley tour). This wasn't an educational/cultural cruise and I wasn't interested in any of the lectures, "Crime in Essex", "The Art of Rolf Harris" and lots of stuff about back ache.

It's getting increasingly humid over here, and windy, too. Clouds are darkening as well, so I'd not be surprised about us possibly getting thunderstorms this evening.

Also, our phone line is now working through our cable connection, which is to say our ISP took over the numbers from our earlier phone operator this morning. The only thing that's still bugging me is that the two ISDN phones which are connected to our internal exchange (which in turn is patched through to our cable router) have gone dark after my plugging in the internal cable to the router, and I have no idea why. I doubt that the exchange may have been damaged somehow as I did disconnect it from the outlet, and was able to access it with the configuration software.

She's Lola, just 7, and was virtually all-white at 8 weeks. Actually not the brightest but surely one of the sweetest cats we've had, and certainly the only one with blue eyes as an adult. I never learned Greek, we turned our backs on the alphabet after our 2nd Lancia Beta went seriously rusty just as the first one had, but yes, she can Mu!

I'm sure SWMBO will want a round the world cruise with a place on the Captain's table every night.

No fear, I've watched these antique buying programmes on TV so I know how it works. I'll start by offering to take her on one of the rowing boats on the Wear at Durham.

Afternoon All

Managed not to get on until late again, due to work commitments, but not a lot to say. Weather is 'orrible here again - was chucking it first thing, and never got beyond cloudy.

Regards to All

Stewart
