Good morning everyone

Well, today I will not be going to collect Ava, as she and Evie are currently in Stoke staying at their other grandma's house. They went on Tuesday and will return tomorrow afternoon. So, I shall be spending the day in the workshop for a change. I will attempt to get some photos taken of my modified circuit board, as well as a few showing how it connects to others.

Back later.

' morning all from red dragon land.

Misty moisty morning - pinecone predictors reckon it is getting worse as the day goes on.

Weather OK, yesterday, on the Conwy Valley Ranch Rly. Busy now it is school summer holiday. Not much time between rides as the platform was full of passengers as soon as the moving boxes on rails departed. On one run after dropping the previous passengers off and heading towards the loading platform, I had to slow down, actually STOP,* and resound the horn to warn people off the edge of the platform. It amazes me that parents, with babes in arms or little uns at feet, do not see the dangers of sticking heads, feet and arms into the path of a hefty moving vehicle right on the edge of said platform. Nothing unusual. Maybe we need to display one of those BEWARE OF THE TR**NS sign from inside the Museum. ⚠️

* On an earlier trip, on a downhill tight bend, the parallel bits of metal ahead hidden behind trees and tall shrubs, I was sure it was going to be minced squirrel for dinner. However, I was slow enough to come to a near stop giving the lazier than usual squatter time to shift.

Other possible delicacies for dinner include: rabbit,🐰 baby rabbit 🐰, jackdaw, pigeon image.png.cfd193a681922c770192a4f92a760be1.png, and Ginger Tom. 😹

Time to get on, finish catching up later.

May your day be close-call free.

Polly

Friday - a peaceful day?  I did the usual jobs then went to the flat as usual on Fridays to check all is well.  I was sure everything had been removed so I was a bit surprised when I opened a kitchen cupboard to find the wine rack (empty) and some hessian bags for keeping potatoes in - they are also good as shopping bags since I keep potatoes in the fridge.  Outside in the bin space I found several plant pots.  I put all the bits in the car, the flat really is empty now!  Then I drove to the beach and walked as far as the harbour pier and back, it started to rain so  when I got near to the car on the way back I came home rather than continuing to walk in the opposite direction.  I picked up a few cowrie shells and looked at remains of crabs which had been washed up, including some small spider crabs.  Most had been part eaten before being deposited by the tide.

I spent the first part of the afternoon hanging pictures that came from the flat, some replaced rather old and faded prints of mine, others went in new places on the walls.  My house might now look like an art gallery but I like it.  Most of the hanging things are now "real" paintings/drawings or needlework by various people.

Later on I cleaned out the pond, it contained a lot of silt and bits of gravel which had accumulated over many years, it is now lying at the side in case anything is living in it so they can get back to the water.  Lastly I had to refill the pond - fortunately we don't have a water shortage and it's the first time I've had to fill it up in over a year.

news last night showed a localish park 2 miles away in Morden where a disposable BBQ had caused a fire at the weekend and also a young lad who had trod on the hot sand on a beach somewhere where one had been and needed skin grafts to his feet.  I've always thought that the bloody things were too dangerous and should be banned.  It seems that some of the major supermarkets now agree and are no longer going to sell them.

What ever is a  disposable BBQ, I've not seen one here?

Im struggling to even imagine a bbq that you dispose of when you've finished, where do you dispose of  it, take it to the tip?  leave it under a bush?

Most picnic grounds and reserves  have multiple free BBQs with gas hooked up, you just  cook your stuff,  give it a courtesy clean then it's someone else's turn.

Additionally you can get  portable gas  BBQs you bring with you, but you don't just chuck them away afterwards.

They are pre filled containers with charcoal in them - they come in differing sizes, and they have a grill on the top on which the cooking takes place.  https://www.amazon.co.uk/YBG-HomeTM-Disposable-Instant-Larger/dp/B095CDQGPT/ref=sr_1_4?c=ts&keywords=Disposable+Barbecues&qid=1659186499&s=outdoors&sr=1-4&ts_id=4295689031.

Sadly (and usually the cause of many fires) the selfish or unthinking *****s just walk away from it. It might get kicked under a bush - maybe in their heads they think* that's tidying up after themselves. I don't normally approve of banning things but I'd make an exception for these.

* I use the term in it's loosest possible sense...

I've not seen those before,  whats wrong with those small portable Weber style  charcoal BBQs or gas  ones used for camping?

Most council areas, campsites and national parks etc also have free  gas BBQs like these dotted around. They always seem spotless, people  clean up after themselves.

Afternoon awl,

It's felt like a grey end to the week. I've had several nights with poor sleep and resultant headaches on the following days. So I haven't felt up to doing very much. Odd bits have been done but nothing to shout about.

I'm afraid I can beat Polly's horror story of putting parts of yourself (or worse, your children) into the path of hefty moving objects. One special event day at a local heritage line, a child wandered past the signs saying keep off and onto the track and stood in the four foot at a range of a few feet, looking at the engine which had just arrived with a train. Timing was tight and the crew had uncoupled and were about to pull forward to run round. The fireman had taken a look out but because of the angles and the proximity of the child, had not seen them. The child was the only trespasser and neither their parents (standing gormlessly grinning inanely at their little darling) or any of the other cluster of children and adults had said anything. The driver was reaching for the regulator when he saw two volunteers 100 yards away waving (as he initially thought) dementedly at them and shouting. He held position for a few moments and then saw what had happened. Some words were had with the parents...

And my house (or parts of it) also looks like an art gallery. I am running out of wall space... Some are my photographic efforts 'writ large' by our friendly local photo printer/developer (happy memories of good days), others are artworks from better known artists. Caring and the pestilence has meant no days out or gala visits for three years, so there's not been any new photos taken or opportunities for me to see others' work and be seduced into buying it. Otherwise the artwork would probably have to go on a rota.

I'm seeing more birds about now than recently, the blackbirds and goldfinches have returned. The former to scoff the last of the redcurrants. Earlier this am I spotted a bluetit doing it's acrobatics on the peanut dispenser for a good five minutes. There's also a rustling in the bushes when I go near them, so I wonder if a second brood is contemplated. Round here, the wood pigeons are the exhibitionists. I see them courting and mating often enough to be able to produce footage for a pigeon-porn channel. Perhaps I should offer them a tent? The other species are more circumspect.

Some people have even put disposable bbqs in the freezer thinking they get the food included.

I have used one before when on holiday in the caravan. The sausages were incinerated the steak well done. Me and the Mrs Argued about it we then made up and in doing so we conceived our youngest son.

That's Skegvegas for you.

A busy but expensive day has befallen me today. The wood work in the spare  bedroom has been painted using Leyland trade satin first time I have used their paint plus point is its made in West Yorkshire Birstall to be precise.

Then it was a trip to the big orange shed for some laminate flooring its only a 2m×2m room we managed to score 3 packs of quickstep laminate reduced from £40 per pack to £23  a threshold bar for £8 and some underlay and still get charged £64

Don't ask me how its happened in not looking the proverbial gift horse in the mouth.

Then we had to fight the Junction 32/ Xscape/McDonald's traffic to get to Screwfix for some other bits and pieces they were selling for half the B&Q prices.

I only noticed earlier this evening that the Commonwealth Games have started!

Sports-free Commonwealth Games story..

At work we once had some Subject Matter Experts from Lockheed Martin in the US arrive to install some software for the RAAF. The install  discs they brought with them were classified "For Commonwealth eyes only".

During their visit the Commonwealth Games happened to commence and they were horrified to learn that the Commonwealth wasn't just England,  Canada and Australia or whatever they'd assumed but that their classification apparently let  India, Pakistan, Malaysia, numerous African countries and even Wales in on the secret.

A hasty call home had the discs reclassified  to 5 Eyes Only. (UK Oz NZ US and Canada)

I have dug the B&Q receipt out of my wallet and realised what the checkout operator done.

The original price of the laminate should have been £121 the marked clearance should have been down to £21 a pack but for some reason he has knocked £85 off meaning 3 packs of laminate have cost me £36 or £12 per pack   Result

Schweinshaxe mit steinofenbrot knodel. Just the sort of thing you need when building and running an industrial powerhouse.

@monkeysarefun sadly, it would seem that far too many Brits nowadays lack any sort of social discipline and/or concern for others (personally, I blame the lack of corporal punishment, Knowing that the schoolmasters could [and would] “go “full Obi Wan Kenobi” stopped most of us would-be junior Darth Vaders from “going to the dark side”)

Have just found out that where I am is attached to a microbrewery - I may be some time….

A morning of fun wallpapering the cupboard under the stairs.  A new word was learnt...

Damnpigginrattinfugginturdycurses.

Still, in seems to be a great improvement and should be a great improvement once the decorator's caulk has been squirted and then the whole lot painted.

And this afternoon?  That was visiting the carpet shop to arrange for a measure-up visit (Tuesday) and get an estimate 😮.  #WottalottaDeltics..........

Not this Bear....🙁

One lucky ticket purchased in the US state of Illinois has won $1.28bn (£1.05bn) in the second-largest Mega Millions prize, organisers say.

The cash value option of the jackpot is $747.2m. The winner can choose to take the cash outright or be paid the full jackpot in instalments over 29 years.

If so, they were playing a deadly game, gambling with little Johnny's life. They came within a second or two of losing him, brown bread in a very gruesome way. From what was said at the time and later reflection, I think it's much more likely they had no idea of the dangers of railways.

Literary point of order... Long John Silver was nick-named 'Barbeque' (possibly after the practice of creating boucan?) so we need not exclude the 'spear side' from a commemorative (middle?) name.

Robert Scarborough Ferris? 😉

A few years ago my friend and myself went into Tess Coes rather late when they had just done the final reductions on the reduced to clear. My friend picked up a few multi-packs of potato crisps for his kids that were marked down to a few pence. When he went to the till the total of the bill was negative, Tess Coes owed him money! What happened was there was a BOGOF deal on the potato crisps and despite the reductions the full price for the multipacks had been deducted. The manager was called and he told the till assistant to pay my friend the money. I'd also picked up some things from the reduced to clear but only had to pay a few pennies for mine.

Afternoon from the moorings Awl,

Just to prove itIMG_20220730_175058.jpg.1395689c5e8cf8e555bb2365eeffcb21.jpg

This Q is getting hungry, food doesn't start till, 19:00....

Two races today,

First went extremely well , an average start, but I kept up with the fleet, despite being the slowest handicap boat. At one point BM was ahead of a 8% faster boat.

Race two thought I was keeping out of every ones way at the start, two boats were over. The others got in a mess and suddenly I was in first place, didn't last long but it took a lap and a half for every one to get past. Then the wind died, and with a strong tide against us we drifted back wards for a couple of tacks before wind resumed if some what lightly, was well behind everyone at the end..

I've been across to my accommodation for the week, made my bed, placed everything in suitable positions, reading light, books, clothing,

Goodnight Awl
