Rarer than hen's teeth I would think. Ben's adoption story as related by @TheQ seemed a bit of a special case to me and involved knowing someone who purposefully sought out someone who knew Border Collies well. If UK rescue operations are anything like the US, most of the canines are mutts. I don't think it matters as much with cats, but the people I know who rescued dogs often inherited dogs with a lot of problems. It's a lot like Forest Gump's metaphorical box of chocolates: "You never know what you are going to get". 11 2

RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted January 23, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 23, 2022 Evening all from Estuary-Land. RMweb seems to be working properly now, fingers crossed. While I've been waiting for something to happen I've been taking a look at Facebook and some other forums and websites, keeping an eye on the circle going round on the tab so I can go back to RMweb when it stops turning. Now to get back to Farcebook.

Back in the early '80s we holidayed in the Lauterbrunnen valley in the shadow of the Eiger, Jungfrau and Monch a few times, usually in late spring. It is a beautiful part of the world as I'm sure our Swiss correspondent will confirm. Nestled on the slopes leading to those three famous mountains is the village of Wengen. We'd been nosing about the place when we stood for a cheesy "we're having a lovely holiday" photograph by a rickety old fence overlooking the valley with Lauterbrunnen far below, the bright blue sky, sunshine and the fresh alpine air completing the scene. Imagine our surprise later in the year to see David Vine introducing Ski Sunday in near white-out conditions, the snow going horizontally and standing in front of "our fence". Such a contrast! Anyway, we've not been back far far too long - the whole area is a glorious place. No I've never skied, the closest I've ever got to winter sports was tobogganing down the hill in my local park on our Gamages Sledge. There that's aged me! Popular Post simontaylor484
Evening All Managed to get moving this morning with a cocktail of painkillers. Then we continued work in the garage. More stuff was rehomed in new labelled homes. I have struggled with the Bosch plane, allegedly loosening the 3 Allen bolts on each of the blades would allow the blade to slide out. But approx 30 years worth of wood dust accumulated inside required it to be stripped down. I turned the blade around and put it back together and tested the planer and the blade shattered luckily no damage or injury caused so it's a new pair of blades to buy at approx £10. I have also managed to build most of a bench for my mitre saw based on a piece of flooring chipboard with a CLS frame underneath its not designed to be portable just somewhere to have it at a decent height and off my workbench. I have finished watching Midway on All4 and watched the first episode of Monty Don's Adriatic Gardens on I player 18
RMweb Premium Popular Post Gwiwer Posted January 23, 2022 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted January 23, 2022 It has been a slow weekend and not just the speed of RMW. Yesterday was just grey and gloomy. Today I have at least made significant inroads into the G-word and have removed four large bags of waste to the compost facility. There's a long way to go before the Hill of Strawberries looks fit for Spring to burst forth but time seems to be slipping by as we enter the last week of January already. Dr. SWMBO and I were discussing over dinner just how quickly-slowly the past two years has passed, if you get my meaning. A state of suspended animation during which it hasn't always been possible to do as we would have liked and for one of us has become a self-enforced indoors exile for much of the time. The days seem long yet where has the past two years gone? 1 1 1

brianusa
This is the time in our part of the world when I usually check EMs and news: 2:00 PST. RMW is still slow and intermittent in most of its functions which means switching off and doing other computer work. There seems to be a real problem between efforts to fix it or to blame it on the ads. We are assured the ads are necessary for funding but even if we were all on the gold standard, the delays would no doubt still be there. When performance is poor and there is no apparent response to clicking on the rate post button, it is easy to inadvertently click twice. In this case, your first rating might (or might not) get registered and the second inadvertent click pops up the "there is a problem rating this post" box. I can't count how many times I have seen this. While page loading certainly can be dependent on waiting for third-party websites to load content (including, potentially, timeout errors), most of the comments about performance today are directly related to the RMweb site itself, rather than the advertising. Things like rating posts, opening the emoji dialogue button, are all core javascript functionality of the editor in the website software and are independent of advertising which is fairly static once the page is loaded and the video popup is closed. As of 8:00pm GMT the site appears to be working nominally - not at top speed but completing tasks. It is ignoring requests to cancel the black box. Getting frustrating. I am reluctant to abandon rmw, it's the only social media that I interact with and I have come to regard many people on here as friends. 6

It was intentionally offline for perhaps an hour around 10:00pm GMT (plus or minus). Top banner, advertising and bottom banner were active presented, along with a big message in large letters: "RMweb is currently unavailable". Back up now - obviously - at 10:40pm GMT. EDIT: Ironically, I did not see this post at the time I saved it. RMweb went offline at 10:45pm GMT before reloading the page. As I edit this at 11:30pm GMT it is back. Some serious server issues I imagine. Edited January 23, 2022 by Ozexpatriate 4 1 8
Erichill16
Evening All, Its a bit frustrating on here recently but life’s like that but At least I don’t pay so shouldn’t grumble. It’s the only social media I do and if it wasn’t here I’d miss the banter. I know we have differing views but I think we agree to disagree at times and don’t get too hung up about it. I really appreciate the support. Spent a bit of time in my room servicing small (very Zmall) times recently and even contemplating something to display them on. Need to get the irritating thing called work finished with but still stuck without an exit plan. Anyway Goodnight and thoughts especially with BoD, Robert Edited January 23, 2022 by Erichill16 Spelling 12 2

Rough collies between £2000- £3000. Ouch May I put in a plea for a rescue centre companion for Ben? It’s true that most of the dogs in rescue centres are mutts, but you’d be surprised how many purebreds end up there. Mrs iD is a dog trainer and has observed that many (most?) of the “issues” that rescue centre dogs (all dogs, really) can have are down to clueless former owners who have neither the interest or willingness to work with the dog (as someone once observed “95% of the problem with a “problem” dog is at the human end of the leash”). She has a client with a rescue dog (aka “crazy dog”) and the dog owner has worked hard with her pooch and the dog has been totally transformed. A good rescue centre (e.g. Battersea, RSPCA, Dogs Trust) will be very open about each dog and the dog’s “issues” (health and/or behavioural) and will ensure - to the best of their ability - that each dog gets rehomed appropriately. As much as both Lucy and Schotty have caused to tear out our hair (and we definitely “learnt on the job” - so to speak) we don’t regret a sngle minute (although it would have been nice to have had a little more experience at the onset). As Berkeley Breathed - the American cartoonist (Bloom County, Outland, Opus) and dog lover - would put it: we and the wolfpack have a life of “love given and love taken in equal measure” Edited January 24, 2022 by iL Dottore Typo 13 5
Popular Post chrisf
Hoorah, second time lucky! Morning all Yesterday was a lazy one. There was no Bond movie on ITV and the Dad's Army film was a very poor substitute. Towards the end of the evening I turned to I-player, only for it to tell me that I had already watched the Portaloo Great British Rail Journeys that it offered. Serves me right, I suppose. I thought a bit about the disappearing friendship that I lamented yesterday but came to no firm conclusion other than that we had dumped each other more or less simultaneously. I really should be able to make a better fist of relationships at my age. As I type this there is something on the radio about working at/from home. There now follows my two penn'orth. Some say that they are more productive in that situation. It is 16 years since I was last in the world of work but I much preferred to have contact with others, whether they be at the next desk or the photocopier. How is a lone home worker to be mentored or assessed? A young acquaintance has been working from home for an e-commerce giant and putting in some ferocious hours. I feared for his mental health but he professed to enjoy the work. It takes all sorts. Chris 1 1
RMweb Premium polybear Posted January 24, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 24, 2022 Bear here..... Well after watching a late film I decided that 0700 was more sensible than 0630, only to wake at 0500 and unable to get back to sleep again (the brain started...) I gave up at 0550 and called it quits. Not sure what today will bring as yet - MIUAIGA day I suspect. There are enough numerous little tasks to occupy myself with to fill the day without having to resort to The Great Lounge Refurb - the next step being to wash then paint the ceiling, which isn't high on my list of fun items to do, especially as it involve several moves of furniture in the process.
RMweb Premium Popular Post New Haven Neil Posted January 24, 2022 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted January 24, 2022 Morning world, took ages to get on this morning then everything worked well suddenly. Unlike me. Supportive thoughts to Warren and his Mum. I wouldn't fare well working from home and Mrs NHN hated it (this was her previous job, which she also hated), but friend Jayne who proof reads proposed legislation and suchlike revels in it, but is seldom allowed to! She works for the Attorney General, and the last one (buried on Friday!) absolutely hated not having his minions in Chambers where he could lord it over them. So she gets occasional days when allowed, and her productivity is high then as the open plan office is too noisy for the concentration levels required for her to work well. It remains to be seen if the replacement, not yet appointed, has a differing approach. Jayne hopes so, as the current atmosphere in Chambers is toxic, as many of the AG's ideas have been very unpopular and ineffective. I think that was a rant on behalf of Jayne! 3 1
