Good Morning,

Pleased to hear that my suspicions were correct and that Ian is pretty much OK. We still have to finish building Halwill. :O

As to taking Vitamin C with Vitamin B... well it depends, MedLine indicates that Vitamin C should NOT be taken with Vitamin B12, as early research suggests that vitamin C supplements can destroy dietary vitamin B12. However, some of the B-Vitamin complex (such as B3 or Niacin) are better tolerated when given with Vitamin C. Harvard Health Publications state “contrary to popular belief, some water-soluble vitamins can stay in the body for long periods of time. You probably have several years’ supply of vitamin B12 in your liver. And even folic acid and vitamin C stores can last more than a couple of days”.

In short the topic of vitamin supplements is a minefield and, most importantly and unlike what some devotees may have you believe, taking vitamin supplements ad libitum is neither risk free or without consequence.

I really should get a flu-jab sooner rather than later.

Morning all ,

cloud and rain , then some sun , now cloud rain and sun at the same time .

Need to get some food stuff today , the larders looking a bit bare .

Not sure about my health , despite five weeks off the weed I still dont feel as if

it's made any difference , I am getting rotten nights of waking up and having a

coughing session that I never had before , and I am getting grumpy with myself

but trying not to let that spill over to others . And I still feel lethargic most of the time .

Oay , time to make a move , have a good one all .

If you're anything like I was you will find it takes several months for your body to recover from its regular 'injections' of nicotine - I was still occasionally feeling grotty about 6 months after I packed up smoking although some things had gradually got better from about the 4 - 6 week mark. The fact that I had been 'rather unwell' (a collapsed lung plus 'some sort of virus') at the same time probably didn't help in some respects but a lot of the longer term grottiness was basically extended withdrawal symptoms.

At you stage in the game think first about sense of smell and taste - they usually seem to be the first upward signs and keep counting the money you have saved - that gets to be a real encourager - well it very definitely was in my case.

Great news Ian.

I have to avoid the 'flu jab. My company provides it for free, but I am allergic to eggs and the 'flu jab is a live vaccine grown on eggs.

The weather hasn't improved since first thing this morning. Cold and blustery are the order of the day.

Mike , your decision was made easier , if thats the right way to put it , due to circumstances beyond

your control , I'm doing it because the medics all say we should stop not really because I want to , maybe thats

the problem , I have no direct reason to encourage me .

I'm still getting my hits with the patches , but I'm now on the first week of the step down grade , down to 14mg from three

weeks of 21mg per day .

I know that what you say about it taking time is right , but I hoped that the general lethargic feeling I've had for some time now

might abate fairly quickly . I put it down to getting older , being retired with no specific need to do things or be somewhere

and maybe the smoking ,

Smell will probably never get back to full power as I have long suffered from clogged sinus's . Hence my

nasal drone when in conversation . :jester:

Without being smug , the saving money part is no ' carrot ' on a stick .

The real big test will be in a few weeks when I go off on holiday , a week in the

sun with beer and no smokes will be really hard . :O

I haven't had flu since having a flu jab. Last lot of flu that I had triggered off all kinds of problems so I'm definitely in the pro-jab camp. I don't get "side effects" from the jab though my GP relatives go all pathetic for a few days after they have theirs.

Egg free vaccines are available in the UK, though I have no idea if that is the case in Germany.

I have gone without flu jabs until now, but now that you've been talking about them, I do wonder if it might make sense for me to get one, given my school job.

Hopefully you won't have delightful children coughing all over you to try and demonstrate how ill they are or have been! I got my flu jab due to taking immunosuppresive medication rather than age or profession. People used to joke that after about seven years in teaching you would be immune to everything during term time but there were special germs guaranteed to break out during the holidays.

That's pretty much the kind of situation I was having in mind, Tony!

I'm now on the train to the city and was thinking about getting something to eat from that Asian diner before heading to uni. I far prefer this to the various cafeterias at uni.

In Staffs we had our flu jabs free from our Surgery, but here in Devon, they're only free for over 65's. Anyone looking to buy a jab should consider Superdrug. For the second year running we were able to walk into the Torquay branch and receive the jab immediately from the pharmacist at a cost of £9.95 each. And it was a Saturday!

Aditi and I get ours for health reasons. When our son was still registered at our GP practice he got a letter suggesting he should have a flu jab as he lived with vulnerable adults. All these mentions of jabs for some reason made me try to recall when I last had a tetanus booster. I know I had a polio booster when Matthew had his first polio vaccine but that was about 20 years ago.

... I far prefer this to the various cafeterias at uni.

Matthew bought into a campus cafeteria prepayment scheme at Calgary. After a week he got out of it. He said protein was only available in meals that would make him "morbidly obese". He found that the Japanese and French international students were also finding campus food difficult. Matthew now cooks with with a group of friends in his campus residence.

There was an "International Student Pot Luck" meal organised on the recent Thanksgiving holiday. Students were asked to take along a popular meal from their homeland. Matthew didn't get back from his excursion to Banff and Jasper in time for it. I didn't ask what he would have taken.

Bit of good news - daughter has received a letter from Exeter Uni today advising her that 'subject to a few minor amendments' her doctorate thesis is accepted and the uni is minded to award her a PhD.

Her PhD relates to the training of naval officers and one thing she has been asked to amend, and presumably bowdlerize, is a reference to 'a Maltrese whore' - I'd have thought that back in the past such persons might have played a large part in broadening the experience of young naval officers - so it strikes me as a strange request :O

...

A few minor amendments is according to my wife academic speak for "proof we have read your thesis". The two chaps who were the external examiners for Aditi's thesis actually apologised for pointing out a couple of minor errors in the bibliography formatting. Though as her topic was about college management she probably didn't need to find other terms to describe Maltese whores (cross sex-workers?)

Edited as the censor got prissy.

MIL took Deb to Malta in the late '60s when the marriage fell apart, working as a civilian physiotherpist with the RN. Deb was required to be a constant companion to her mother - except when MIL had a boyfriend, all of whom were naval officers, natch, on which occasions Deb could stay out all night!

Good news that, Mike - congratulations to your daughter!

I'm glad I changed my mobile phone provider - much better 3G signal on my iPhone everywhere I've been today. Prices are about the same as with my old one, so I guess you can say I'm getting more for the same buck.

Off topic (what is the topic?):

I've just replaced a plastic water butt which had sprung a leak (I'm not surprised as it weighs over 4 cwt when full).

Anyone considering obtaining one might like to consider the 20% Off Voucher from Southern Water.

Although I'm nowhere near any Southern Water, they are exchangeable at B&Q against the purchase of water butts.

As the price of these things is rapidly increasing, it might help.

No connection with either organisation - especially since B&Q have closed their In Store toilets.

No idea about Maltese ###### but watched a really bad 1950's American b*stardisation of Casino Royale last night with Peter Lorre.

As for flu shots. I've had 4 really bad flu bouts in my life. I've had 2 flu shots. The reaction from the shots were far worse than the flu itself.

DD: just wee in the bathroom dept like everyone else. :O
