We are back in Essex. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Dorset. The journey home was going reasonably well until the M25 turned itself into a car park.

Bear here....

 

The Sander is all back in one lump - with no bits left over.  That's a Tick.  I did have a worrying moment 30 minutes after I discovered that the brush-end of the motor armature was kinda wiggly inside the sander casing - cos' a certain numpty Bear had lost the uppermost bearing off the end of the shaft 🤬.  So it was search the garden, the lawn, the sh*d, the house between the muddlin' room and the back door, the muddlin' room....several times.....

I eventually found it sitting quietly on one of the muddlin' room worktops - definitely a Very Big Tick....

 

All the accessories have been cleaned up; the carry case has been blown free of dust and tomorrow it'll get a good wash as well - I've also ordered a pack of 20 new sanding pads from the 'bay to go with it.  Hopefully (and after a bit of work) it'll live to smooth another day.

Following recommendations on here we decided to try one of those Crusty Molecular Pizzas tonight instead of our usual Chicago Town/Dr. Oetker/Goodfella's etc. Went for a Stromboli Spicy Salami and I must admit I really liked it but The Boss found it a bit too spicy for her (she doesn't really do spicy).  It seems we'll go back to Chicago Town Tiger Crust next week as Ocado are offering 2 for £4 instead of the usual £3.50 each.  However I will definitely have another bash at The Crusty one.

Should have tried the plain one first, just a hint of spice.

No problem. Came out as "normal". Good to see the NHS being proactive.

In the above photo Roys of Wroxham is the building just above the road that the white line goes through, doesn't exist anymore as that's the carpark in front of Latham store. I've now proved that, because of that 1947 photo. Lathams first used the Roy's building before building the huge supermarket on the field behind between 1963 and 1965.

Just had a letter from the NHS for a routine diabetic eye test.. so they claim.  Only it's not routine, it's six months out of sequence, it's not at my doctor's, it's at a hall 10 miles away.. I'm guessing the drug trial I'm going on has triggered the NHS to order up an extra Eye test.. we'll see if it also triggers the doctors diabetic clinic that also used to be in June / July but they dropped during COVID..

We had a very pleasant  day yesterday; we went for a walk along the Grand Union canal at Soulbury 3 Locks.     It would have been rude not to pop into the pub of the same name and have a spot of lunch.    Whilst we were out the postman delivered a tub of semi-fluid grease.   On my return I inserted a suitable quantity of said grease into the Beeza's gearbox.

 

I thought I'd go for a ride this morning.   It took so long to re-arrange the garage and get the Beeza off of the bike ramp that lunch beckoned.  So I went for a ride this afternoon instead.  I thought I'd stay close to home just in case of any problems following the gearbox work so I went for a few laps of the Puppershire Brands Hatch circuit rather than the usual Puppershire TT course.   Probably did 30-35 miles.   All was well but I am going to have to take the whole box out at some point and recondition it as gear selection going down the box is still very iffy.

 

I've also spent quite a lot of time doing some life admin. Specifically Mother's accounts.     We do her main shopping and other stuff on the web (She is cracking on for a 100 years old after all and doesn't do the internet, have I mentioned the fact that not everyone can do things via the web before?  😉).  She provides us with a suitable wedge every now and then to cover costs and then we do a fairly informal reckoning up when we see her.   This seemed to work OK but has somehow got completely out of kilter over recent months and I just couldn't make it reconcile.  So, as I have all of the raw data (Cheques, order receipts etc stashed away) I've rustled up a complete balance sheet in Excel instead of on scruffy bits of paper (Mother) and the Notes App (on my phone).    Anyway, it's just about sorted now and I feel much happier that the information is available and in a presentable, easy to understand and agree form.

One pharmacy chain has rolled out these do it yourself "free health check" machines.

 

 

 It lets you know your Blood Pressure, Weight,  BMI,  % Body Fat , Heart Rate,   Heart "Age"   and Height as well as some airey fairy things like "Social Index" and "Emotional Index".

 

Planned upgrades include health pathology ( I guess some kind of blood testing regime ,going by the icon), and "Sleep analysis", though I'm  not sure how that one would work, maybe you are meant to  nod off for a few minutes or something.

 

It takes around 4 minutes all up.

 

Based on the result it can flag any concerns and recommend followups / lifestyle changes you might like to consider.

 

 

 

 

A nice touch is that you can choose the "standard" health check or what is called "The Shane Warne Legacy Heart test"!

On Tuesday we went to the Motor Museum at Beaulieu.  Not been for years and really enjoyed looking at some of the lovely old vehicles there.   Some nice bikes as well, far too many to post or even photograph but a couple made me think of some of you guys.

The exhibits organized by local clubs (not the 'fleece the punters' travelling shows) are much like 'good' British model railway shows and highlight the best. The extra degrees of freedom for LEGO builders (over railway modellers) offer great scope for creativity.

 

I was quite taken by this in the Spring show in Portland.

It was built by a couple, precocious attired in matching 'acorn' knit caps (they looked very Portland). The whole was on a rotating turntable, extremely stable and probably close to 5' tall.  For scale there's a minifig with a red and white mushroom hat (35mm tall) in the foreground. It is lit internally.

 

The tall tower is capped by a roof in the shape of an inverted sunflower. The other tower was capped by a pinecone. Their technique was exemplary. They implemented stained class in a manner I never realized was possible with LEGO geometry. I immediately slavishly copied it.

 

Last year someone had a very nice (slightly larger than O scale) 1950s British BLT. Not finescale but the models were immediately recognizable. I should have taken photos.

Back in the sunny tropics where it is bucketing down. 25 minutes from doors open to the taxi rank, would've been about 8 minutes if I didn't have a checked bag to collect.  If one airport can do it (noting it's not a small airport) then so could others if they wanted to.

Along this line is the small, but apparently very lucrative, trade in selling off titles.
 

Back in those days when monarchs were, how can I put it?, more “Robust“ than they are nowadays; along with handing out decapitations, hanging drawing and quartering, dismemberment, nose and tongue slitting etc. for various infractions of the law; they also handed out hereditary titles as both bribes* and as rewards. This means there are a number of superfluous titles around which can be flogged off by impecunious Aristos to raise cash or to pay for yet another tax bill from HMRC.

 

As I am only vaguely knowledgeable about this trade I have no idea as to either prices or hierarchies. By the latter, I mean are titles purchased from the British Aristocracy worth more than that those bought from the French aristocracy? Is a being a Duke worth more than being Le Duc?  NB I just found this: https://nobility.co.uk/index.php?dispatch=pages.view&page_id=6. which answers a few of those questions. But even if you do buy a title, you still need to have the money and the schooling to pull it off.

 

In addition to “spare” aristocratic titles going on sale, there are also various minor titles of mediaeval officialdom that have never been struck off the roles which are currently unfilled and are up for grabs. Often such roles with sinecures for people doing favours for other people further up the mediaeval hierarchy and come with “rights“ as well as duties. Many of these rights are still enforceable, although in today’s society, most of them are just quaint traditions.

 

I reckon that with some judicious research, you could buy yourself those titles that give you as yet unrevoked rights and powers to do obscure mediaeval things that could seriously inconvenience today’s authorities.
