RMweb Premium Popular Post jamie92208 Posted June 3 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted June 3 Good moaning g from the Charente and many thanks for the anniversary good wishes. We had a great anniversary meal with some 120 plus others at our village Salle de fete. 6 courses, 3 bottles of wine between four of us at a n excellent price. Good company. Just four Anglais. Started at noon and we staggered home about 18.45.one person was in need of navigational assistance. All in all a good day. No sore head this morning either. Beth to Physio then French class this morning. Fortunately the two venues are next door to each other so Beth is going to sit and have a coffee while we attempt to speak French. This afternoon may welbe spent in the shed. Regards to all. Jamie 15
RMweb Premium jjb1970 Posted June 3 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 3 A lot of men from Cumberland fought in the India-Burma theatre. George MacDonald Fraser of Flashman fame produced one of the best memoirs of the war in 'Quartered Safe Out Here' telling of his time with the Border Regiment in Burma. When I grew up in Carlisle a lot of older people were still alive who'd fought in Burma and almost all of them had a visceral hatred of Japan up to their dying days. 7

RMweb Premium jjb1970 Posted June 3 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 3 Yemen shares quite a bit in common with Afghanistan, hardy tribes that make for superb irregular fighters and terrain almost designed for such fighters. Though Ansar Allah (houthis) are an organised force with a lot of heavier weapons and not just a bunch of tribal people. 2

No advantage played. And a Delay Repay claim already submitted. As an FYI this trip was booked through LNER because my bank offered a cash-back deal with them. I went to LNER's site to claim and found that they do not entertain claims for less than 30 minutes delay; the reporting system had decided my train arrived 28 minutes late so no claim. I then went to the GWR site - as they operated the train - and successfully lodged a claim for "between 15 - 29 minutes late". Buyer beware. There is always a way to get your money back where that is due. Interesting as I often use LNER to buy online tickets especially last minute when we are not sure of our route till often on the platform / preceding train journey. my last attempt at claiming delay repay was on Southern but the info on our ticket wasn't enough to make a claim and it would have only been a few quid so didnt follow it up. Our trip on Saturday to the K&ESR via Roberstbridge bus link for their 50th anniversary was a very good day with newly repainted NSE livery class 73 and Britannia running passenger trips on the short length of track at Roberstbirdge. Buses and trains extremely busy but it just about worked out OK for us. However on the journey back from Hastings at Gatwick where we have to change trains there were track problems at Earlswood so the GWR train to Reading was cancelled last minute as were many Great White Worms (Thameslink). Not quite sure what happened but the worm that we were mean't to catch stopping all station to Redhill went fast to East Croydon, so we flew through Redhill station on the up fast. We eventually got back to Redhill half hour later. That just spoilt the end of the day as I was not happy, bringing back memories of commuting when that sort of thing was a regular occurence. Just booked our Eurostar trip for our Summer trip away. Now to find sensibly priced hotels. The dates we initially looked at for Brussels, Rotterdam and Liege are stupidly expensive but a bit of replanning and so far Rotterdam is coming out fairly cheap so must be an event on the first dates checked. Looks like Leuven, Luxembourg possibly Cologne, Rotterdam Antwerp then Brussels. Then back to London and up to Scotland to do the new Levenmouth route aand fingers crossed that its open , the Ashington line. RMweb Gold grandadbob Posted June 3 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 3 Good morning all, Patches of blue sky amongst the clouds and there was some sunshine earlier. Will probably become overcast but should stay dry. 13°C rising to 22°C. A walk to the post office is planned after breakfast as The Boss has a parcel to return. After that I'm thinking about washing the car as it is rather dirty. Of course , if I do, it's bound to rain. Have a good one, Bob. 2

RMweb Premium Popular Post Barry O Posted June 3 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted June 3 Ey up!.. An old umpiring mate died recently. Off to his funeral today.. been told to wear my umpires coat.. a nice way to show respect. My dad was flown back to the UK from the Middle East during WW2. His belongings were put on a ship.. which was torpedoedso he list a lot of his mementos.. why fly aircrew back to the UK? To fly Dakotas to DDay. This ruse failed as being an "Old lag" by then he demanded his 6 weeks leave as he had been in the Middle East for over 3 years (ie a pre war posting.). He missed D Day bur went to Arnhem instead... @figworthy the C17s are a lot louder when they do low level passes overnpur house.. Time to get up and ate. RMweb Gold Popular Post Tony_S Posted June 3 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted June 3 We went to my cousin’s Ruby Wedding celebration this year. It was a lovely relaxed day. No family tensions unlike our usual visits to Enfield. We met my brother’s fiancée for the first time. She was a really nice person. She had just returned from a visit to her family in Venezuela, which had been rather interesting! It was nice to see my brother being happy again. We stayed overnight in a nearby hotel and will be going down for breakfast in a few minutes. Tony 13
Erichill16
Morning All, Not sure what today will hold but I’ve already sent a couple of emails off, work related. Swmbo and hovis still to stir but breakfast has been taken. Looks a bit overcast and probably great for doing outside jobs but sounds like neighbor next door is already out making a noise. 3
RMweb Gold DaveF Posted June 3 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 3 A mix of cloud and blue sky right now and pleasantly mild. My share of the house wrok is done, e mails dealt with and one lot washing done and drying so it is time to get on with the photo scanning. Will this be the last day? I hope so. Later they may be some gardening. David
RMweb Premium BSW01 Posted June 3 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 3 Good morning everyone Dull here as well, but we have plans for the day that doesn’t involve DIY, or gardening! After breakfast the plan is to go to RHS Bridgewater for a walk, a look round the garden centre AND cake! So that’s the morning sorted then. Back later. RMweb Premium New Haven Neil Posted June 3 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 3 Morning, from a rock full of bikers. 16c and not actually wet, although the rest of the week is looking a bit dodgy. It's also the 8th anniversary of Jayne's husband Gary being killed in a stationary RTC, (hit by a bike coming the other way after he fell over - no fault either way, just incredibly bad luck) but she likes to be on her own although shoulders are here if she needs. So a day of thought and reflection for us all in the friendship group. Not sure of what I'll be up to, no racing today so perhaps a mooch about looking at bikes. @polybear Yes Mickey D, had a lot of 'attitude' but is maturing now, but I find others more agreeable, Dean Harrison is our favourite.

RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted June 3 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 3 Morning all from Estuary-Land. A bit late on parade this morning as just as I was signing into RMweb my internet connection went down. In the past when that happened I would contact my IP on my landline to find out if it was them or a fault with my equipment. However now my landline is on the hub that went down as well. They changed it over within the last year before then the landline was on a separate system. That is a rant. 1
