Morning all

Glad to see that you are back with us Don.

Sorry to hear that J's family are causing concern Gordon. Give her my regards.

We are in the process of sorting residential care out for MiL. Sadly, it is agreed by all concerned that she can no longer safely look after herself, even with regular visits from carers and family. She has been in hospital for a couple of weeks and the various social workers and panels held their meetings. Yesterday was the deciding 'best interest' meeting and the decision was made. She was medically ready for discharge and we were taking some of her own furnishings, pictures etc to the home ths weekend but the hospital told us they won't now discharge her as she has 'caught an infection'. There is something frightening in those words from a hospital these days.

Trev: It is always good to return home and sleep in your own bed - or are you someone who is happy with a nomadic lifestyle?

Seems we all have our problems today. I keep thinking each new year will be better than the last, but realise that's a faint hope as loved ones get older. It's my mothers birthday today and I'm pleased to say at 89, she is still going strong. She misses my Dad, but seems to have settled in to her sheltered accommodation as well as we could have hoped. Just knowing they are safe and sound and looked after is a huge relief.

Morning all.

Gordon, sorry to read about your in-law health concerns.

The fan in our boiler stopped last year while it was really cold. Fortunately the fan for our 20 year old boiler was still available abd Eon came and fixed it. So at least last year my service contract was less than the parts cost.

It is quite warm and I don't think it is raining but Robbie didn't seem to want to go out. He looked quite happy to stay in his bed this morning. I think he is getting used to the cooked meals and lounging about all day lifestyle.

We were originally going to stay with my brother this weekend but cancelled. I'll try and clear all my train stuff that I stored in Matthew's room while I was decorating. Aditi will go and see her Mum tomorrow. MiL is recovering well from her fall but is bored so all visits are appreciated.

My mother's move to sheltered accommodation in Droitwich certainly made her later years more comfortable. The "postcode lottery" of medical care meant that she got better health care as well. My brother and I still own her flat and are finding selling it difficult to sell (offers have been very very rare and low).

Morning all, my problems seem a little bit small compared to worries about the health of loved ones I hope there is some good news soon. i thought of a title for your book Pete, Pre retirement activities of a New York railway modeller. Snappy no? Have a good day everybody, Trev I thought I indulged my kids too much but baby sitting while you are fresh off the plane is not a good scheme you need some quarantine time.

When my brother worked overseas it always used to annoy him that as an engineer he was always flown home by the cheapest route in the cheapest seat. Salespeople used to fly business class. As his trips home were usually either flying north or west he claimed never to have suffered jet lag. If he had been required to do anything with babysitting he probably wouldn't have come home. My brother has many fine qualities but coping with children isn't one. I have been amused though at how well he has survived being a "step" Granddad!

More worrying news there, Gordon.

I sincerely hope that what can be fixed is attended to soon.

What's happening on Wittering?

Plans for the winter but not much otherwise.

The recipient has had a fairly major operation and it seems to have helped with throat and ear problems.

The family are moving in February so will have to wait and see the proposed new site.

Smashing one board didn't help - more damage than I first thought.

Now mostly fixed.

It's long term anyway - he's not ready for it yet.

In other exciting news, I survived the Humbug Lunch but had trouble remembering all the old jokes I usually tell.

Opted for beef instead of Turkey and it was the right decision.

Glad you survived the lunch. What was the turkey problem? Was there a fight over who got the leg? Not a problem that Pete (Trisonic) seems to have at Christmas lunches.

Managed to source a new fan assembly. £180 later and a fair bit of swearing from me, we have heat and I'm off the hook. There is a God up there....

Our boiler has a positive pressure combustion area so after the fan is replaced the door seals have to be checked. The seals are no longer available so if they were faulty it means a new boiler.

I'm not too bad at domestic water plumbing but I have found that the jobs I expect to be easy seem to turn out difficult. The simple job of fitting a waste to a new bathroom sink a few years ago was a real problem, not solved until I ignored the instructions. My main problem with plumbing is stupidity, ie being so pleased at what I've just soldered together and forgetting that it was hot when picking it up. Anything I've replaced in the past has been of reasonable quality, some of the brass fittings originally fitted in this house were rather poor.

I've tried to plan ahead for house maintenance as I don't feel up to fiddling with soffits or gutters anymore, so we had them replaced when we had the house double glazed. This must have been one of the last houses built with single glazing. Most recent job done (not by me) was the garage roof. Others down the road have started leaking so I didn't wait (don't want trains to get wet) so we had the felt removed and a membrane product fitted.

The turkey problem was that it wasn't cooked properly. Not such a problem with beef. A hazard of mass catering I suppose.

Oh dear, I hope no-one was ill. Perhaps the caterer needs one of the Turkey deep fryers that cooked my brother's Thanksgiving dinner. The device looks like a tea urn with a gas cylinder attached. One of my aunts used to specialise in raw turkey and burned beef at Christmas , don't really know how, may have been a mix up with Centigrade and Fahrenheit.

When we were in Holland we had raw beef sausage. It didn't seem to do any harm!

I'm just back from the DiY shop. Someone decided to do some dusting today so I've had to replace a door handle and a kitchen light fitting. Everyone else at Homebase seemed to be buying Christmas trees. The fumes must have affected people as the driving in the car park was very erratic.

My son was driving home about 1AM this morning (he's staying with us just now). As he turned into the carport, to quote him, he saw the 'biggest ##### black bear I have ever seen' just about to turn over our garbage can. It took off as soon as the headlights lit it up. We've heard that there's been a big male wandering about the neighbourhood, but this is the first time we've seen it in our garden. So - bear clips on the garbage cans all the time now, and a bit more caution when we go outside after dark. :scare:

Nothing that dramatic round here, but the Jack Russell up the street has crapped on my grass for the third time this month.

His owner ain't gonna dig the look of his doorstep in the morning... :girldevil:

I'm sure I mentioned before about my father worked nights and every morning arrived home and had to clean up the front lawn where a dog had deposited.

One morning he was early and hid as he noticed the lawn was clean. A man actually sent his poodle into the garden to use it as a lavatory. Dad didn't say anything, he just followed the man and dog home. Next morning he did say something, never saw the man or dog walking past the house again!

Mick, I've just done that shovelling you mentioned. About a year's worth!
