Gonna probs fall asweep after supper……☺️ Hmmmm Let’s see. The past few games have not seen the Seagull chaps score a single goal. A new tactic was tried today. Let the opposition score a goal for us in their own net and allow us to walk away with three points. Won? On paper, yes. But please, chaps, let’s take a leaf out of the ladies’ team which stuck seven goals past their opponents in the usual 90 minutes plus play-acting, whingeing and other stoppage time.

RMweb Premium Popular Post polybear Posted March 10 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted March 10 Bear here..... Just back from a weekend away at a certain religious retreat 🤣 called Missenden Abbey. Bear has been joining lumps of brass sheet designed to secure some choo choo wheels** in the right place; I also constructed a gadget that connects a leccy motor to an axle*** All whilst hangin' out with around 70 other like-minded people (many of them rather clever indeed) and receiving guidance from the most excellent Tutors. What's not to like? **On Saturday evening a certain Bear discovered that he'd left them at home. Turdycurses ***Them too. Double Turdycurses. Fellow ER'ers need not fear, however - Bear continued to calorie count**** right thru' the weekend too; how's that for dedication? **** It was 87, 509....... ION....... RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted March 10 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 10 Evening all from Estuary-Land. Toad in the hole for dinner tonight with a few veggies. Just watched a bit of TV this evening and there was an interesting item on the Antiques Roadshow, a bronze Buddha dating back to the Ming dynasty. What was interesting was where it was found, in the Australian outback. Apparently the Chinese had visited Australia long before Europeans even knew of its existence. 5 2 8
Popular Post Erichill16
Another week flashes by with sporadic visitors to ER land. Hopefully all are well, especially those not reporting in regularly. Hopefully my circumstances will changing soon and I be able to banish the old pestle mortar to history and finish with the old CPD. Can’t wait but quite a bit of work will be involved and also a bit of horse trading. Goodnight. 1

There was a series of (pre-Columbian) Ming Dynasty trading fleets in the first half of the 15th century - that visited most of the Indian Ocean. This Wikipedia page is a bit tedious - it really could use more maps - but it lists seven voyages between 1405 and the 1430s. A book titled "1421 - The Year the Chinese Discovered America" authored by an RN submariner posits that further fleets entered the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. It has largely been dismissed as pseudohistory, but I enjoyed some of the ideas. Wikimedia has a nice map of the Ming Dynasty treasure fleets (on the 1421 page). 3 1
Flanged Wheel
If anyone is interested in early global maritime connections, there is a great book called “The Boundless Ocean” by the historian David Abulafia*. There was so much activity and interaction between people groups much earlier than I thought (especially in south east Asia and into India and the Levant). *He also wrote “The Great Sea” which is another good read with a more detailed focus on the Mediterranean. 2
Ozexpatriate
It's after 6:30pm and is still light. Sunset (daylight saving time) is not for another 40 minutes or so. I'll get used to it but is is disruptive. I spent the middle of the day in the dark (watching Dune - part 2) which ended a little after 3:00pm. The sun* was still quite high the sky - well under two hours at that point since solar noon. * We had a short 'sun break' in the rainy overcast. The Academy Award telecast is on. There is live tennis from southern California. I might bounce back and forth. 4
RMweb Premium Popular Post jamie92208 Posted March 11 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted March 11 Good moaning from the Charente. It may have rained in the night but I haven't looked outside yet. We had a very pleasant afternoon learning how to play Belote with some friends. A good game. Not sure what will be done today but probably will discover things to do. No 1 son is back in the wilhe video called his mum at lunchtime. RMweb Premium Popular Post polybear Posted March 11 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted March 11 Bear here..... Back from a silly o'clock paddle in the pool; not sure just how many months it takes before this swimmin' lark starts to become "fun".... I did note that yesterday's brekkies (at M.A.) was "somewhat more interesting" than today's....there may be a clue there. Definite Poo. Now facing a morning of driving the washing machine; I'm hoping for a wander at some point today as well. I also need to unpack, sort and replace all the tools and "stuff" I took to Missenden Abbey in their proper homes, which will no doubt keep me amused occupied for "some time" as well. One thing that normally happens to a Bear (and I suspect others as well) whenever I go to M.A. is I spot essential tools n' stuff that others have and Bear doesn't....so Bear normally comes home with a shopping list - that'll be a mission for today as well. Fortunately the shopping isn't too painful this time..... BG.
RMweb Gold Popular Post DaveF Posted March 11 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted March 11 After a much better night's sleep I awoke to yet another grey damp day with a very fine drizzle from time to time keeping it wet. I think even the gulls are fed up, let alone ducks. My share of the housework - the dusting - is done, the cleaner will come and do the rest later on. The washing is on so that's my urgent jobs sorted for the day. I had a look at my diary yesterday from when I had the other hernia done, it seems that I am doing a bit more than I did then which is not a good idea. Six years ago I was told to slow down and let nature take its course, so I must do the same now. The trouble is I hate not doing things and while I enjoy reading and TV there can be too much of it but I'll have to put up with it for a while longer. Then it was just over 6 weeks before I went out for more than an hour or so, I must modify my plans for this week as it really wouldn't be sensible for me to go to a National Trust place and start walking round yet! Therefore today will be reading, photos, modelling (if I can sit comfortably at the table) and more TV/DVD/YouTube. If it dries up there might be a short walk, not more than a mile or so. Popular Post pH
Yesterday’s main activity (apart from changing time on the clock in the car - q.v.) was watching soccer games. 9 year old granddaughter has been playing for three or four years - goalkeeper and defender. Yesterday was two games in the end-of-season tournament, and she got to play the second game as a forward. She scored her first-ever goal! They won 4-1. Understandably, she was over the moon. Then her dad’s team were playing in the cup final of the league they play in. A good, hard, but generally fair game (only two yellow cards - both sides of the same incident). They won 5-2 and move on from the local competition into the provincials. 6
RMweb Premium Popular Post BSW01 Posted March 11 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted March 11 (edited) Good morning everyone It’s been a few days since I posted at the start of the day, but it’s been a bit hectic here, one way or another. There has been a bit more progress in the cellar, but not quite as much as I would have liked. All the sections of skirting boards are now cut, but as yet still not fixed to the walls. Today we should have been going to Dunham Massey for a walk, but Sheila isn’t firing on all cylinders, so that has been postponed until next week. Yesterday, Max cancelled his modelling session, as he too wasn’t feeling well. So, instead of a walk in the countryside, I’m going to complete the Sainsbury’s Grand Prix, fab joy. Back later.
