Evening all from Estuary-Land. Feeling a lot better now especially as I'm back on the painkillers. Problem is I didn't realise how dependant on them I was. But given the present state of the NHS I won't be getting the replacement hips and knee anytime soon.

Not a trick question. Years ago I thought many places in Yorkshire must be a bit grim but visits over the years have proved otherwise.  My only visits to the northwest apart from a weekend in Chester have been drive throughs to the Lake District. 
We are hoping to meet some friends who live in Rochdale and visit RHS Bridgewater one day. 
My definition of a nice place, somewhere with some interesting history and where the car will still have its wheels when we return to it after a pleasant lunch.

Good evening everyone 

 

Thankfully, the weather stayed fine, although to be fair, I was working inside today. However, I did have to make a few trips to both the shed and workshop, to put things back here the are usually stored. By the I’d knocked off for the day, the cellar has been cleared of as much store as I could and the floor has been vacuumed moped. Hopefully, I can start laying the laminate flooring later in the week. Tomorrow, we have plans to go to RHS Bridgewater in the morning, whilst there, no doubt we’ll have tea and a slice, so what’s not to like?

I am sorry to be bossy here but really you need to make an appointment with a gp to discuss your arthritis problems, it is affecting your mobility, the  amount of paracetamol you are taking would be cause for liver function blood tests. Even if you have to start with a telephone appointment, it is a start. Covid did delay routine hip replacements but if you don’t start the process off you won’t get anything done.

Hmmm if I said that George Orwell wrote the Road to Wigan Pier back in the 1930's and I don't think it's changed much.

 

To be honest Wigan is a lot like a number of other towns and cities, Bolton, Leigh, Bury, Trafford, Rochdale, Oldham, Stickport etc around Manchester in that it has suffered with a lack of investment. Manchester sucks a lot of the funds up and there isn't much left over.

 

There are certainly nice spots such as the one I was at this morning, Arleigh Hall, but they are few and far between. The countryside is also the same, with exceptions Trough of Bowland.

 

I would certainly visit Bridgewater as it is a spectacular transformation, especially since I knew it before hand, but it is relatively 'new' so still maturing.

Back in Singapore, on the MRT to work. The flight back was pretty good, the food was well above average, my lunch main course was chicken thighs with hot sauce and when they called it hot they weren't lying. One of my amusing flight memories was on a Vietnam Airlines flight from London to Ho Chi Minh (the airport code is still SGN) when a load-ish voice was heard 'I can't eat any of this, everything's got rice or noodles'. I couldn't help thinking that the fellow in question had best be prepared to go hungry as he was going to the wrong part of the world if he didn't eat rice or noodles. I  had four hours in Ho Chi Minh which was enjoyable for a sad individual like me as I spent the time photographing aircraft. Alas, as with most airports now you have to shoot through glass (remember airport observation decks?) but there are excellent views of the runway from the terminal and its not difficult to find a spot with no reflections during the day. I found a nicely positioned seat in the airline lounge.

I was chatting with a friend in the Singaporean delegation in London and it made me think about airline ticket class. He flew Singapore Airlines,  they do not have to use SQ but their government policy is economy class travel, his ticket was S$3000, I asked him why they don't consider allowing an upgrade to business class as my ticket wasn't much more at S$3600 but he said it's a procedure and not about price (ministers and permanent secretaries are different obviously......). Something about business class is if you are not wedded to a particular airline it doesn't necessarily cost that much more. Yes, flying Singapore-London in business class with BA or SQ can be bonkers but some of the other Asian carriers are very competitive. I have been using Vietnam Airlines and Air China, both are very good in business class and have some excellent deals if you don't mind transferring. My deal is I get business class but am expected to be 'responsible' when booking tickets, as an airline enthusiast I actually enjoy trying different routes and airlines so like looking for alternative options. I  must be one of the few people whose boss tells me I don't have to be so cheap as it is now a bit of a game to see how low I can get with the flight.

I do. Every Christmas my Aunt would visit and return to Sydney. We would see her off and watch the aircraft depart from the observation deck. I well remember the commercial linked above. I wonder how much (if anything) the 5th Dimension was paid. There's a pervy moment at around 35s but it's not quite "Hello, I'm Yvette, fly me to Paris" that was common in airline advertising at the time (early 1970s) - like this from California carrier Pacific Southwest Airlines in 1972.

Good moaning from a damp Charente. I got woken by bladder control at 03.30  and a steady drip drip sound.  It was persisting down. It stopped soon. This happens very occasionally when the wind is in the wrong direction. I read for a bit then slept till 07.45.

 

 Lots of small jobs to do in the sitting room, the minor refurb is nearly finished. If the two slightly longer cables arrive from RS then it will be finished.

Ey up!

 

Having taken my new medication at 06:00 tea could not be consumed until 06:30. Pah!

 

@PhilJ W if you go to your GP you may be surprised. A few NHS Trusts have farmed out hip and knee replacements to private health care providers (same doctors.. just cost NHS more to get the job done.. hard life for these consultants!)

 

Must admit the one I saw was surly, full of cold and had a " can't be ars£d with this but £195 for 10 minutes is fine" attitude. The GP who saw his letter was appalled...so was I as his advice is.. "just live with the pain".. wonder how he'd do if I walked his hip with a large hammer??

3 hours sleep, pink pills, three hours sleep, 3 hours of wake up find a new comfortable position, sleep for 15 minutes wake up and repeat.

Aches and pains making finding comfortable positions difficult.

 

Howling wind all night, only 35 mph but from our most exposed direction. It's also the most exposed for our coast, this will not be good for those areas being washed away by coastal erosion.

 

Ben the "you're late" Collie definitely wanted out, the wind had dried more of the surface of the garden  but it's squelchy beneath. The lone daff of the second bunch has been joined by friends so there are two bunches flowering, one with white outers to their  flowers, one all yellow.

 

A peer through the window of the landrover and the fancy charger now says 100 % charged, I'll give that an attempt to start after breaky. If it doesn't it'll be time to investigate the starter, which is down low beneath the exhaust manifold exit.

Depending on how long that takes will make a difference as to what happens after, muddling is the most likely.

 

Time to head to the kitchen.

Morning, from a sunny, still but rather chilly rock, 4c at 8am so presuming it was a lot colder earlier on.

 

Bedding washing today, joy of joys.  Excitement knows no bounds.  Then there is a list of some length, lawnmower safety catch is not working correctly (battery mower) and not allowing it to start - initial diagnosis is the issue is the linkage rather then the switch, that has been replaced previously.  Then the tip recycling centre, with glass and old oil, shopping, oh the fun never ends.

 

Back for a grumble later.
