The tutor was never around when you needed him so there were long spells of having to wait around to get onto the next step etc which slowed down all of us. <<Pah!>> All the pieces came home - top, legs, stretcher, wedges - then moved up here with us and are still waiting to be finished (sanding and varnishing mainly and no room to do it) and assembled. One son built a dining room table in high school woodwork classes, which we have in our kitchen. He did warn us about this before he brought it home - since he had to learn the use of various different tools and techniques, the four legs are all different in shape. (But they are all the same length, fortunately!) The woodwork shop in the school is about 250 yards from our front door. In contrast to your tutor, the teacher was very available - he even helped our son carry the completed table home! 20

Snowdrops are over, and the crocus not far off it either. Nothing seasonally floral is evident here yet. There are some green shoots that look like they will produce buds and flowers. Next weekend should see around 15°C. Perhaps then?

Hence my absolute abysmal ability at writing when my mother could have been an author. But to even things up I'm quite good at woodwork. Aha…that explains it. Skipping a generation would appear to apply to looks and physical features as well. Although in my case it appears to have skipped multiple generations. Probably around about the time that our branch of the family tree fell away from Brad Pitt’s. 2
Popular Post Grizz
Off to work shortly. Still snotty and still feel exhausted but it is Monday and I’m going to be mostly doing inspections so it is not a bad shift as such. The session with the unmentionables was quite good fun, although it required a last minute rescue as one loco completely failed, resulting in it being dragged by two rescue locos. Hence the Sunday service was run using a no heat freight loco…bin there done that…shivering your nots off with condensation running down the inside of the windows. Ah happy days. Have a great day all…. ATB Grizz Unmentionables….. 6
RMweb Premium Popular Post TheQ Posted February 19 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted February 19 First secondary school did wood work and metalwork which I enjoyed. Second secondary school didn't do either. At the Third secondary school I couldn't do them because my subjects in England didn't match up with those in Scotland, so woodwork and metalwork got ditched. I'm not particularly expert at woodwork, but I've built Blue Moon, a 4 poster bed, a 53 ft shed, two looms, restored others, and of course built numerous boards for an unmentionable purpose. I can see my errors, and inaccuracies, I know I can do better.. then I make different errors. Mooring Awl, 3.5 hours sleep, short awake, 1.5 hours sleep, longer awake, 2 hours sleep a good total Ben the I want out NOW! Collie, insisted on going out an hour early, I suspect that's because he knows more rain is imminent. The water levels in the lower garden are 3 inches lower than last night, it's still running out onto the road though. The entire garden is soggy, boots sinking into the grass. Ben took me into an area of the garden we don't normally patrol, more lopper work needed up there before mowing commences next it's likely the mower would sink into the mud and grass if I used it at the moment. We have one small bunch of Daffs flowering at the moment a couple of others getting close, but the majority have some way to go, I wouldn't be surprised if we loose some to water induced rot this year. I noticed on the way to the SC the hedgerows are coming into leaf, clouds of Blackthorn flowering in hedges, garden trees have pink or white flowers. I've some minor assembly work todo on a picture frame but other than that it'll be muddling today. Time to... Go get a muggacoffee.
RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted February 19 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 19 I was initially taught woodwork by my father and still have and use some of his father's tools. My school started woodwork when I was in the sixth form and I loved it and learned a lot. I have done quite a bit over the years, beds, cupboards and shelves etc. It all cam in handy when I worked on restoring a horse tram. Our joiner taught me a lot. I don't claim any great competence but still love working with good wood. My latest project is the new shutters which now hang outside the living room. Anyway a variety of tasks this morning. Getters to clean out and then some paperwork and phone calls. Jamie
iL Dottore
10 hours ago, Ozexpatriate said: It seems that Flavio's ( @iL Dottore )'s real online shopping nemesis is not Amazon but Swiss protectionism. Perhaps the Swiss trading and commerce authorities believe he should find his local Canton's 'Geppetto' to provide woodworking services rather than purchase suitable equipment to do the job himself. Nope, it's definitely Amazon. If Swiss protectionism is in force then the Item will carry a red text warning: "This item cannot be shipped to your selected delivery location. Please choose a different delivery location". If the supplier is in Germany, then it's "nicht lieferbar in der Schweiz" When I searched for the Woodpeckers Precision Woodworking Square it wasn't listed on any of the Amazon divisions (UK, Italy, Germany) I go to. Prompted by @Mike Bellamy's recent post, I just searched again: on Amazon.de I only get a cheap Chinese knock-off that has - misleadingly - "Woodpeckers" in its name ("Aluminum Alloy 90 Degree Woodpeckers Angle 851, Woodpecker Tools, Angle Shaped Right Angle Ruler, Carpenter, Woodworking Tool for Boxes, Picture Frames, Shelves, Cabinets, Clamp" - sic); Amazon.it doesn't even have cheap Chinese knock-offs and although Amazon.co.uk does list it - it's together with the immortal words that accompanies any decent product*: <Currently unavailable. We don't know when or if this item will be back in stock>. Even Amazon.com just throws up a bunch of cheap Chinese knockoffs. * anything that has a recommendation from a reputable review/hobbyist site, or from a reputable consumer magazine review will almost invariably carry the notice <Currently unavailable. We don't know when or if this item will be back in stock> if it's listed at all on Amazon, it's almost as though Amazon prefers to sell poor quality knock-offs! At least Ali Baba is upfront about what they are flogging. 10 1 1

iL Dottore
Why does Amazon loom large in my list of grating annoyances - simply because (certainly in Switzerland) they have significantly contributed to the demise of the small specialist shop. Since I arrived in Switzerland, I have seen model railway shops, general hobby shops and the like disappear. OK, things weren't cheap and frequently items had to be ordered - but you knew that if you wanted a @monkeysarefun Electric Horse Repellent, you could order one - confident that you'd get a @monkeysarefun Electric Horse Repellent. But since such small, specialist, shops have closed down if you need a @monkeysarefun Electric Horse Repellent then you either have to put up with what Amazon deigns to flog you (e.g. a ZXBVZT Electrical Hoss Repellent - which looks very much like a photo of a MaF EHR) or order from abroad - with all the associated shipping and import costs and delays. 8 6
RMweb Premium Popular Post New Haven Neil Posted February 19 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted February 19 Morning, from a sunny but cool rock, 8c not too bad and not currently raining. Housework day beckons, washing isn't going to do itself. I must photograph the daffs while they look good, for some reason they are not flowering yet at all in some places nearby, but others are almost over. Usually they pretty much all flower together. Woodwork is best avoided by me, you can't weld it. I can make things from metal, but wood doesn't generally behave for me. At least my crummy baseboards are covered in scenery to hide the bodges. 2

RMweb Gold grandadbob Posted February 19 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 19 (edited) Good morning all, Dry start with hints of blue sky but some patchy rain forecast however it should be drier and brighter this afternoon. 8°C rising to 14°C. Rugby watched and enjoyed yesterday and I expect TB @tigerburnie was sweating a bit as his Tigers were made to work hard for their victory. It will be a normal sort of day for me with a walk scheduled after breakfast and then a visit to The Shed.....unless The Boss comes up with one of her bright ideas to scupper my plans. Winslow Boy
1 hour ago, Hroth said: I can do you a piggy bank.... You see that's what's wrong with the 'younger' generation today - instant gratification. They want it now and then loose interest. If they had to save up for 'it' then they would savour the moment of its arrival and then treasure it. But no it's - now, Now, NOW. So now that I've got that off my chest I'm away to buy a shed with 0% interest from Hroth Enterprises - importers & exporters of all things wood. 1 1

RMweb Premium BSW01 Posted February 19 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 19 Good morning everyone A sunny cloudy sunny cloudy (it can’t make its mind up, so delete as appropriate) sunny start to the day here in England’s northwest corner, where it’s currently 9C. My first task today will be to head off to Sainsbury’s to complete the weekly Grand Prix, as we’re almost out of milk. After dinner WE will be going to Waitrose, to get bits and pieces we can’t get from Sainsbury’s. After that there’s not a lot on the agenda, but by then, there won’t be much time to do anything else anyway. Best getonwithit then, back later. RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted February 19 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 19 Morning all from Estuary-Land. Dry if a bit grey this morning but showers predicted. Not a bad night last night, seven hours in all with only one interruption from bladder control, and only the odd noise from Arthur Itis to remind us of his presence. As long as it stays dry I might even do some of the G word today but first another muggatee. 1
