I couldn't possibly comment. Jamie When I arrived with my Resident's Visa (as opposed to the earlier short trips on a Tourist Visa) I was asked by Immigration whether I had a criminal record. I was forewarned that they did not consider it amusing to be told "I didn't realise one was still needed" I was also asked "Who do you barrack for then?" Trick question? Or one to test my authenticity as a resident? The answer was a very swift and decisive "The Seagulls". Because (a) It's a VFL team in the lower echelons of the Aussie Rules game - a "sport" which I have never warmed to nor followed, and (b) because it happens to also be the nickname of the kickballing team in the south of England whose fortunes I do vaguely follow. Largely only to have a point of discussion with BiL and a long-time friend who are both ardent fans but hey. Nice coincidence. 17

The only super friendly ones we met were Swedish, they even looked like an ABBA tribute act. Our previous port was St Petersburg and we had been warned not to smile , just hand over our documents. Service with a scowl and ferocious stamping of bits of paper. Aditi said if the officials had smiled about a cm of foundation makeup would have cracked off. However once through there was a very jolly policewoman greeting every one and wishing us all a great visit. However Stockholm seemed very relaxed compared to St Petersburg. As to finding a crime, on my first night as an acting Sergeant one of my colleagues brought a prisoner in and I asked him, why Justin. I thought he was being a pratt so locked him up was the reply. We did find something but which offence it was is lost in the mists of time. Jamie

I think they are legal anywhere in the EU but I have only seen them myself in Belgium and seen it described a such on menus. I did wonder if something in the Netherlands was horse but it was raw beef. We were in Austria near Zell am See once and a family with all the women in Islamic dress came into the restaurant . They ordered pizza and very specifically salami pizza. This interested me as I was then curious about what meat was in a salami. Years before we had been in Austria and we were doing the breakfast crossword (in German of course) and one of the clues was “found in some sausages”, four letters. The waitress helped us and even did a donkey impersonation to give us a clue, reducing the whole dining room to hysterical giggling . RMweb Premium Popular Post TheQ Posted January 28 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted January 28 (edited) Afternoon Awl, No morning report as I was late getting back from Burns night, midnight actually, 8 hours later I was leaving to back to the SC. Burns night went well with over 80 attending, my speech didn't get boo'd so I survived. A bit frosty this morning, light winds all day. South south East winds but with big shifts occasionally, +-45 degrees Course, 4s, Ss,1s, all 3 races. Attendance poor, I think too many had too many whiskies last night.. Race1, Decided to start at the starboard end ... Almost.. as it was possible to sail up the broad. From there, however one of those wind shifts made this impossible suddenly we were head to wind , had to tack off, found our selves at the first buoy in last place, followed every one to the next buoy . On the run down to buoy one we moved left to the leeward side, the others were playing games and gradually moving right each trying to be on the inside for the next buoy. our move paid off, we overtook two boats After that it was follow the leader for the rest of the race, the leader finished the race at the end of lap 3, however the second place boat kept going... There were 4 laps. The previous leader restarted, but never quite made it back in front by the real finish.. Race 2, A much better start, out towards the windward port end, not only that we hit the line first, held first for three laps, but then the spinnaker boat got past us on the run, having sat on our tail for the run. That slowed us considerably, so the third place boat was right on our tail round the final buoy, on the tacks back up the the finish she just out pointed us. Getting past us 50ft from the line. Race 3, Allcomers, same course 3laps. We started from the same place but unfortunately two lasers caught us on port and we had to pass behind then, so we arrived at 4, in a close 3rd place, following on to buoy S, on the run they went right tge rear of them trying to get to windward, we went left, arriving at 1 in 3rd but at a much better angle, we swept round them on the out side, but much faster , coming out the other side in first. After that with clear air we were away and led the race till the finish. Edited January 28 by TheQ 19
RMweb Gold DaveF Posted January 28 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 28 I've just had to look for Early Risers in Wheeltappers in the Forum list as it has gone missing from View New Content. It's not the first time, last time someone had deleted something and upset it. The day has gone quite well, it was the Candlemas service today at church, the other server and I went round the church lighting candles held by the person at the end of each pew and they then lit other peoples' candles. No one set anything on fire. When I got home I realised I had forgotten to thaw the meat to cook for my dinner so I had a ready meal - a beef casserole - instead. It tasted good. I've done the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch, they have a new website so I couldn't simply log in to enter the results but I got there eventually. At the moment people who have an account are unable to access it so I can't see how my results compare with previous years. Such is progress. My gut feeling is that I saw fewer birds this year. There have certainly been fewer pigeons around in the last couple of days. Perhaps the birds know they are being counted and are all hiding. There were hardly any gulls at the beach yesterday. I've captioned another batch of photos which should be enough for a few months on flickr but I will continue doing them. I'm not sure what I'll do for the rest of the day but I expect there will be some TV and reading but I haven't looked up what is on yet. Popular Post Ohmisterporter
I have a bit of a problem here. Kath has been told not to drive on medical advice so we are going to notify the DVLA of this. I know it will result in them asking for her driving licence to be returned but that will leave her without any form of photo ID as we do not have passports either. We have previously been told that our bus passes are not acceptable proof of identity other than for bus rides. It seems just a few short years since the government, with their usual forward planning, abandoned a scheme to have all UK citizens issued with identity cards; following complaints from the usual suspects on the grounds they were damned un-British IIRC. I remember it caused some amusement among our foreign uni student at the time. Now we are told we will need an ID card to vote in future elections. Does anyone have advice on what type of photo card is obtainable and legal in the UK without the faff and expense of buying a passport?

At church we get complaints about the clock striking every fifteen minutes during the day (it is silent at night). We also get complaints from different people if for any reason the clock is silent during the day. David 6

Gov.uk now state senior bus pass is proof for voting. Problem was last time not all officials at polling stations knew. Also some post office parcel collection staff won’t accept bus pass (they should do) but accept a non photo credit card as ID. You can also apply for a Voter Authority Certificate, just need an appropriate photo. 3 hours ago, Andy Hayter said: Apply for postal or proxy voting. It's not formed like a patty. You slice the sausage and fry it like a patty. Or you crumble it and cook it like ground beef/mince and use it in sausage gravy for biscuits and gravy. Chicken potpie is highly variable. Sometimes it is just like a pie - pastry crust and top. Sometimes it is in a crockery dish with a pasty top. The version you mention with biscuit/scone dough on the top is less common in the western states. This is more alike to 'chicken and dumplings' - very similar to the innards of a chicken pot pie with cooked biscuit/scone dough either as the base or lumps inside. The Aussie pie brand name comes from the nursery rhyme "Sing a song of sixpence" - with "four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie". The more interesting question relates to the origin of the expression. The internet is inconclusive. A Guardian comment board (and many other sites) suggest quite flamboyantly it is related to Blackbeard the pirate - which the Wikipedia article debunks. Others suggest that it relates to Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries. Mum had a hollow ceramic 'blackbird' to release steam from a pie being baked. 3 3
