Ned Kellys armour is on display at the State library of Victoria and is well worth checking out when you are next in teh area..

 

Two things immediately come to mind when viewing it.

 

1) Why did none of the other members of his gang say "Ned - what happens if they shoot us in the leg?" and;

 

2) those shots to the helmet would have made your head ring!

 

 

Ned Kelly is now mainly commemorated in tattoo form, usually accompanied by a tattoo of the Eureka Flag with "Australia- love it or leave it!"  intertwined, and also fondly  remembered  for his single-handed attempt to get the Victorian railways to re-gauge their track  to P4 standard.

I have just checked a recipe for Flammkuechen which confirms in part what I thought:  It suggests the base can be bread dough or unleavened pastry.  It is the latter that I have always had.  I have to confess that the ones I make are with pre-prepared bases but the results ate certainly of the yeast free variety.

JUst read that Shane Macgowan has died. Not unexpected I guess, but still very sad, his version of "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" though hated by Eric Bogle  who reckoned it sounded like a donkey braying gave the song a whole new audience.

Afternoon Awl,

3 hours on the roof of the garage.. darn chilly, ice in the valleys of the asbestos roof.

First clean off all the bolt heads and their failing rubber seals,

Then give the roof a general brush off, found a 5/8ths hole in a valley I must have missed before. But unfortunately it's not where the leak for the workshop is , so that's not the problem there.

Spent some time drying and cleaning the hole  area.

The cold wind was enough to dry the bolt heads and their rubber seals.

All heads now covered with acrylic roof sealer splodge.

As was the hole splodged.

 

After a warm up and a muggacoffee, Ben took me for a walk. Deliberately kept short as Ben is on limited exercise at the moment.

 

Muddling room given new light bulbs, I can see!!!!

 

Unmentionable given a lot for green ready for grass..

I think there's going to be quite a few pothole repairs going on between now and March when local authorities find a few pounds left over. With such monies its use it or lose it.

That's very much a  UK budget thing, particularly in the public sector, live like misers for three quarters then squander money in Q4. I hated it.

Basildon District Council seem happy to have them in Wickford and Billericay but didn’t impose them in Basildon or Pitsea.

The zones in Benfleet are near primary schools.

Flakes of snow in the air all day but nothing settling. Drove to Salisbury expecting to see more there, but zilch. However, some cars coming the other way had a slight layer of white stuff on them.

 

Just been up in the loft (or is it the attic; is there a difference?) to bring down the Christmas decorations. Found some boxes with model ----way stuff in them. There are two sig-------- I'm trying to find but I've no idea where I put them.

Technically,

An attic is tall enough to walk round in and covers the entire roofed area.

A loft may not be tall enough to walk round in, and covers only part of the roofed area.

 

In our case we have 2 loft hatches, giving access to 4 loft areas, two of which you can walk round in once you've crawled between the chimney stacks and the low sides of the roof.

Hence it would be a right pain to put a muddle railway up there.

I think our roof covers the house bits. It is a fairly standard hipped roof with a dormer bit at one end. It is possible to walk about the central area but not very far as there are lots of roof supports. Moving around the roof area over the room with a dormer window is possible as long as you slither. Putting the insulation in when I upgraded it a couple of winters ago was “interesting”. I am not as agile (or thin ) as I,used to be so I only did the difficult areas when Aditi was in and I had my phone in my pocket, just in case.

Apart from the hospital and  Waitrose in Leigh I don’t go to Southend very often. When we first lived in Benfleet we seemed to,be in Southend frequently.

The main roads in Leigh sometimes appear to be the only ones without them. Not that it will make much difference to Leigh High Road with so many cars parked there of an evening.

Another busy day shaping with some panicked request for report changes as NOW someone wants to look back beyond the 5 year window we agreed upon an eternity ago! Oh well, good thing they pay me well to buqqer about like this 😀

 

Pre-rehearsal happy hour tonight, followed by the obligatory rehearsal. Extra time this evening as after the full choir rehearsal - for Sunday Advent services - the schola will rehears for an additional Advent Evensong we're performing at Sunday at 4pm! May as well take a cot and camp out on Sunday sounds like!!!

 

-2c and sunny at BIN processing time, headed for 3c for the high.

Today did not turn out quite as planned.  After the service at church one member of the PCC said he had expected to see me at the PCC meeting on the Tuesday of this week at which a presentation on the possible new web site was given.  He was somewhat annoyed as I had done a lot of the early work and he assumed I was no longer interested.

 

I gently pointed out that if someone had invited me to the meeting I would have been there.

 

It turned out that he had informed Chris, who was doing the presentation and had just assumed I would know.  Both he and the secretary have been politely told that they need to improve their communication skills and that I expect to be invited to future meetings.  I have now heard that a small group has been set up to decide on the exact text to be used, I have said I expect to be included if they wish to keep my participation.

 

I feel sad about it as it is just this sort of thing which puts people off volunteering to help.  About 15 years ago I volunteered to look after part of the churchyard, the same person never got back to me then.  I'll leave it there.

 

I had a chat with some friends nearby who go to the same church, they have had similar problems at times over the years.

 

I've done a bit of Christmas shopping and spent the afternoon watching "Kind Hearts and Coronets", it's a long time since I last saw it. I also got my accounts done and checked they come to the same figure as the bank.

 

I'm sure that by tomorrow I'll have got over my annoyance and will see a funny side to it.

I can remember when I and about another 20 colleagues received a note asking us to report to the college vice principal to explain why we had not attended the previous evenings staff meeting. In fact we had. It turned out he had lost the second sign in sheet. After about 10 people had reported he tried to just tell everyone to go away but it was too good a chance to stay and  annoy him.
